European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - February 17, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Monday. February 17, 1986 the stars and stripes wolves used defense to win title big schools Victory prevented repeat of 85 finals loss a photo by Tracy Bat wolves coach Sieve Perkins is Given a Victory ride by his players including tourney map Steve Hutchinson 45 by Ben Abrams prep sports editor Mannheim Germany this feeling is much better than the one i had last year at this time a beaming Steve Perkins said late saturday night. His Wuerzburg wolves had just finished soundly trouncing the Nuernberg eagles 49-32 to win the dodos Germany big schools basketball tournament. Last year the wolves let the boys championship get away from them As Baum older came from far Back to win the Crown. Steve and Shaland were part of last year s team said Perkins and they had the attitude this year that they weren t going to let the same thing happen again and they certainly did the Steve and Shaland to whom Perkins was referring were 6-7 Center Steve Hutchinson and 5-10 guard Shaland White two of the prime movers in the three game sweep to the title. Hutchinson scored 15 Points grabbed nine re Bounds and also had nine blocked shots As the wolves demolished the eagles with an impregnable defense. The wolves were never in difficulty. They scored 14 Points in each of the first two quarters and held Nuernberg to Only three in the third period As they rolled 10 their 16th Victory in 17 outings. Mike Brown paced Wuerzburg with 17 Points and Mike Lusk teamed with White and Paul Howe to help mount a defense that absolutely would not yield. Nuernberg made Only 13 of 53 shots from the Field. Perkins thought that Nuernberg coach Don Karr played into Wuerzburg s hands by going for a control game especially since the eagles had such an outstand ing Ball handler As Frank Gotz. I was surprised when they went to the control game because they re a very Quick team said Perkins. Gou is an excellent Ball handler and also an outstanding Driver. He also is a very Good shooter from outside. I was concerned about whether or not we had the quickness to stay with them in a running game and i was pleased that Don decided but maybe that was a tribute to our defense per Kins added i thought our defense was outstanding throughout the tournament. We really did t have a close game Here and that was because of that defense.
