European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 31, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Monday March 31, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 11 dear Ann Landers i need your help. My husband refuses to become involved. He keeps saying the kids will grow up and the problem will solve the kids he is talking about have not lived in our House for Sev eral . They Are All in their late 20s. I want my House to be my House. I have earned the right to do things in my own time and in my own Way. I would like to do my laundry when i feel like it and not go to the Utility room and find one of our daughters using the washing machine. If i feel like sleeping late i Don t wish to be awakened by a couple of children who Are screaming at each other. I do not like several people having the keys to ourhouse. We have come Home and found strangers in our living room eating drinking Beer and watching to. We came Over with Johnny one said last week. He just yesterday one of our daughters was going through my closets when i was out shopping. I found her when i came Home. I told her off and she became upset. This was once my Home and i will always feel that i belong Here she yelled. I told her this was your Home when you lived Here but now you Are a guest and guests come when they Are invited and they do not go through these kids assume that anything and everything in this House belongs to them. I cannot count the number of items they have borrowed and failed to return. My husband or i have had to go get our Lawn Mower hand saw paint portable sewing machine a Rug Shampooer just name it and they have borrowed it. I had to go to my Daugh Ter s House this afternoon to get this Type writer so i could write to you. The refrigerator is also fair game for whatever they want. I am always running out of milk butter and eggs because of them. We plan to go to Florida in a couple of weeks. I want to have a showdown before we leave. I am sick and tired of our adult children running through our House when we Are away. Every time we return from a trip the place is a mess and some appliances Are broken. It would never occur to these slobs to clean up after themselves or fix what they break. Am i hard hearted As my husband says or crazy please let me hear from you right away. I need help. One alone in Syracuse dear one you Are neither hard hearted nor crazy. Your husband however has a Noodle where his spine belongs. He should Back you to the Hilt in your announcement that the game has changed. Your children should be ordered to turn in their keys at once and accept the fact that the House and every thing in it belongs to you and your husband and from Here on in they Are expected to conduct themselves like guests. Apparently they were raised when permissiveness was in Vogue and consequently they never Learned to be responsible adults. I Hope for their Sake As Well As yours that they shape up. It s a Heck of a Way to go through life. Dear Ann Landers according to the Prairie rambler of Claremont calif., Alben Barkley said the Best audiences Are intelligent Well educated and a Little drunk. You be done a lot of Public speaking. Do you agree Demosthenes dem i prefer audiences that Are intelligent attentive and sober. Readers wishing to write to news America Syndi Cate columnist Landers May address their letters in care of. The stars and stripes Apo 0921li us forces army dental corps replies to criticism of Quick fix Here we go again another Quick fix which will result in More eroded benefits. To improve the. Quality of medical care 230 army dental officer authorizations Are being transferred to the army nurse corps Over the next two years. I am Happy for the nurse corps As they definitely have needed More staffing for years for better patient supervision. There Are rumours now of various Continental ils. Posts being completely civil ionized. Why could t they have civil ionized the nurse corps if they were in need of a Quick fix the army dental corps is in the Best posture professionally and administratively in its history. Our excellent posture has been entirely due to being allowed to manage our own resources since 1978. The figures prove it. Having lived through the old Middac concept in the late 60s and Early 70s, where retention and morale were virtually non existent i hate to think what can Hap pen to morale and the retention rate in the dental corps and erosion of dental Bene fits for family members and retirees. You can bet they will suffer since they receive care on a space available basis. If dental services Are contracted out do we go to the lowest bidder will these civilian dentists As in the past be Rele gated to gs-12 pay grades if Many More authorizations Are Cut every other tour will be overseas another morale problem. I foresee results of what is happening in the next year As a major problem in productivity and Quality dentistry five to eight years out again requiring a Quick fix to bail out of the situation. However much the pressures on or. Mayer and it. Gen. Becker there must have been a better Way than to sell the Best asset in the army medical depart ment Down the Drain. This is the beginning of Large problems in dental care. The Celebration of our 75th anniversary on March 1 could have been our last with any meaningful attendance. Name and location withheld editor s note a spokesman from the office of the chief army dental corps replies the office of the chief . Army dental corps shares several of the con Cerns mentioned in the letter to the editor of stars and stripes. However the letter is based on misinformation and a general Lack of understanding with regard to the reduction of dental corps assets. This specific reduction was actually mandated by the office of the assistant Secretary of defense for health affairs and a in the program budget Deci Sion pad 041 of the fiscal 1987 budget process. Their office directed a decrement of 81 dental corps spaces not 230, based on a disparity Between current dental As sets and dental wartime requirements. Although the dental corps submitted a Strong rec Lama to this pad these spaces were ultimately transferred to the army nurse corps because of a Large nurse shortfall during mobilization and a greater mobilization requirement than the dental corps. As the referenced letter states this reduction was offset by providing several million dollars to 81 contract civilian dentists. The contracts will be non personal services contracts under the direct health care provider program. As such these civilian dentists will not be the lowest bidder nor will they be is employees limited to gs-12 salary schedules. The decrement schedule for these 81 spaces was spread throughout health services come. Most were directed at smaller installations in close proximity to major metropolitan areas As they offered better opportunities for contract execution. The others were directed at larger under served locations to test the viability of contracting for dental services in Iso lated areas. The Only areas in this scenario that were totally civilian Zed were Small one or two Man clinics which Are directly subordinate to a dental head quarters nearby. All others retained a Mil itary contingent of one or two dental offi cers. As mentioned earlier the dental corps does have genuine concern with regard to any reduction in authorized spaces As they affect availability of dental care to authorized beneficiaries. It is hoped that space available care will not be reduced but Only time and actual experience will Tell. A reduction of the magnitude mentioned in the letter would indeed require that dental officers spend More time overseas. The dental corps is extremely proud of its current standing within the Amedd Community and the army and will continue to strongly recommend against any reductions or system changes that would alter this status. Writer Calls baby Sitter an insult As an Early childhood educator i must take exception to the headline and article appearing recently baby Sitters told of social Security tax people who provide care for children in their Homes Are not baby Sitters they Are family child care providers. What is the difference family child care providers Are trained by the family child care staff of the army child development services to provide developmental care for children. This care involves a myriad of learning activities from Art and music to outdoor play and cooking from Field trips and Story time to scientific experiments and language games. Family child care provid ers plan nutritious menus for the children in their care and receive training in child Hood illnesses and child abuse. They Are business managers dealing with Parent contracts and establishing rates which Are fair to both Parent and provider. To Call these Multi talented and caring family child care providers baby Sitters is to insult them in the highest degree. What s in a name plenty or.
