We did t panic Dallas a seniors like Johnny Dawkins have Jed Duke through the Mcaa basketball tournament but it was freshman Danny ferry who put the Blue devils into the championship game against Louisville. Ferry picked up a Loose Ball in the Lane and scored on a Layup with 23 seconds left saturday giving Duke the Lead for Good and sending the Blue devils to a 71-67 Victory Over Kansas in a semifinal game. The 6-foot-11 ferry was a Little dazed by his heroics. I Don t remember much about it. I m still in a Daze he said. Ferry who had been the object of an intense recruiting Battle in the Atlantic coast conference was also involved in another key play saturday. After his Basket ferry Drew a charging foul against Jayhawk Ron Kellogg. Ferry said that was the Only option he had to prevent a Kansas Bas Ket. Next time Down Kellogg drove the Lane. There was t much i could do ferry said. I m not a shot for a moment it appeared ferry would be charged with a blocking foul but the officials saw it the Way ferry saw it. I knew i was there. I really did t have to worry about it at All ferry said. While ferry was the key in the stretch it was Dawkins who kept Duke alive. The All America guard scored 24 Points and his follow shot with 1 49 remaining tied the score at 67, setting the stage for ferry. Senior leadership was evident. We did t panic we settled Down and took the Good shots and got Back in it Dawkins said. Dawkins had a hand in setting up ferry s Basket. He was chasing the Ball but could t get control of it and batted it to ferry. I just remember i and Cedric Kansas guard Cedric Hunter went up for it Dawkins said. I was mad be cause i did t grab it. I was t trying to hit the Ball to a specific throughout the tournament Dawkins has been the catalyst for the Duke offence averaging More than 25 Points per game. He says that while teammates can do the Job he wants to handle the close situations himself. You have to really want the Ball. A lot of times on transition i be been Able to create some things Dawkins said. Duke coach Mike Krzyzowski got a scare in the second half when Dawkins appeared to have suffered a hand injury but it turned out he just hit the funny Bone in his Elbow. With 4 18 to go Johnny was talking about his hand Krzyzewski said and i said forget your hand forget everything. Take your shot " Dawkins scored two baskets after that advice and it was the Start of Duke s first trip to a championship game in eight years. Ferry was thankful to have played his part. All year the seniors have been doing it ferry said. "1 was just Happy to get my Duke from Page 21 end the Duke coach joked to pick up a Loose Kansas also got Little production from Dreiling who had six Points on one of seven shooting and six rebounds before fouling out with 5 41 remaining and the scored tied at 61. It s Tough when you get in foul trouble Dreiling said. It takes away from some of your aggressiveness. I thought you saw that in Danny and Manning who brought a 17.1-Point scor ing average into the game shot just two for nine the first Basket of the game and one with 4 23 to play that put the Jay Hawks up 65-61. He played just seven minutes of the first half. That s the Way i coach Brown said. If we had gotten Down by six or eight Danny would have been Back in the game. But i wanted to save him if i just Don t know what it was said Manning. I just did t get any Breaks. I had a bad Duke won it at the foul line making 21 of 30 to 9 of 12 for Kansas which also lost key sub Archie Marshall to a knee injury. Marshall who scored 13 Points left with 8 10 remaining and Kansas ahead 59-55. Ron Kellogg a 6-5 senior Forward who practice Only one Day All week because of a strained Arch in his left foot scored 22 Points on 1 l-of-15 shooting from the floor. Dawkins who hit seven-of-11 Field goals for 15 Points in the first half finished with Louisville from Page 21 we possibly could. We can t expect any in the final 20 minutes Louisville con trolled the boards 26-18 and out shot leu 63.9 percent to 35 percent. Thompson had eight of his 10 rebounds in the second half while Williams did Little. I Don t know what happened Williams said. Sometimes i was inside and some times i was tigers Forward Ricky Blanton said the cardinals were doubling up on John and kept him from putting the Ball on the floor. That s what he likes to do but they took him out of that with double and sometimes triple teams. That makes it Pervis Ellison had 13 rebounds and All five starters scored in double figures for Louisville which is seeking a second nation Al championship to go with the one it won in 1980 under Crum. It was the 16th consecutive Victory for Louisville 31-7 and Champion of the metro conference and the West regional. Leu ended the season at 26-12. Thompson s jumper 5 15 into the second half began the 13-Point run by the cardinals with Wagner and Jeff Hall feeding each other on fast break layups the second one tying it 54-54 at 6 05 of the half. Hall scored again 62 seconds later with a five foot jumper to give Louisville its first Lead of the game. The Streak continued with a 20-footer from the left Side by Wagner and ended when Junior Forward Mark Mcswain tipped in a follow shot was fouled and Sank the free throw. It was now 61-54. Don Redden who led leu with 22 Points hit a foul shot then wag Ner canned two More 20-footers from the same left Side location to give the cardinals a 65-55 Lead. In that 17-1 spurt by the cardinals leu was held without a Field goal for 5 07, missing 13 consecutive shots. Redden later scored nine of 11 leu Points As the tigers closed to within four Points but Louisville pulled away again. Leu built an 11-4 Lead two minutes into the game with Redden s three Point play to open the scoring and baskets by Williams and Taylor off steals. With Thompson suddenly asserting him self getting Louisville s next three Field goals the cardinals began establishing inside control. They pulled into the first of seven first half ties at 19-19 after 51/ minutes. But with leu going inside to Williams on almost every trip Dow court and the 6 foot-8 Sophomore Forward bulling his Way under the Basket the tigers managed to stay even with or ahead of Louisville. The cardinals managed their last tie of the opening half at 33-33, then leu out scored them 11-3 in the remaining 7 02, getting a fistful of second shots in scram Bles under the rim. When Anthony Wilson canned a Corner shot with 47 seconds to go the tigers owned their biggest bulge of the game. 11 of 17 from the Field. It was Duke s second Victory Over Kansas this season. The Blue devils beat the big eight champions 92-86 for the big Apple National invitation tournament title in de Cember. I get tired of saying wait until next year " Manning said. But Thompson s Basket was followed by Dawkins rebound to tie it again at 67 with 1 49 remaining. Kansas veg men7 spent much of game on Bench Dallas a Danny Manning and Greg Dreiling the two big men Kansas counted on for scoring and rebounding spent much of their time saturday night sitting Down. And Down with them went the Jay Hawks Hopes for an Mcaa basketball title. With the 6-foot-11 Manning and the 7 foot Dreiling in foul trouble most of the night Kansas was beaten by the Duke Blue devils 71-67. I m emotionless right now said Dreiling a senior who scored Only six Points in his final game for the Jay Hawks. This has been quite an ordeal. I just Don t know what to feel at this i Felt frustrated to be on the Bench. Dreiling who has had foul problems All season said. That s not where you want to be. You want to be out there helping somebody. It s just something you have to live Dreiling fouled out with 5 41 to play and the game still on the line. Manning who was voted the player of the year in the big eight conference and was the most valuable player in the big eight s Post season tournament hit Only two of nine Field goal attempts for four Points. It s kind of hard to Lake this year to end it this Kansas coach Larry Brown said he was pleased his team was in Contention although two of his principal players hit a combined three of 16 from the Field and had Only 11 rebounds Between them. When you have two kids that struggled like that you would t think we d be in the game Brown said. "1 think it s a credit to our team that we were Able to be in the game at the asked if he considered leaving Manning in the game in the first half Brown said no. That s the Way i coach he said. If we had gotten Down by six or eight Danny a july have been Back in the game. But i wanted to save him if Duke led 36-33 at the half.
