A signal car Wash in West St. Paul claimed a dub s $1,000 prize by offering to sell Gas for 47.9 cents and the station pledged enough Money to lower that by 10 cents per gallon. In Austin Texas about 1,600 motorists waited up to three hours and tied up traffic to get free unleaded gasoline at two service stations. Both Gas station owners competing in a bidding War sponsored by a radio station bid to give the Gas away. Lines stretched for two Miles and several cars overheated ran out of Gas and wound up with dead batteries. Brian Ettesvold executive director of the Minnesota service station association said if the promotion idea becomes widespread hell recommend court action under a state Law that prohibits Selling goods below Cost in Many circumstances. The promotions capitalized on falling prices of gasoline resulting from the worldwide plunge in Oil prices from nearly $30 per barrel in december to about $11 per barrel Friday . Unemployment rate drops after february jump Washington a the nation s unemployment rate on the heels of its larg est monthly gain in nearly six years slipped a notch to 7.2 percent last month As the Economy created 227,000 jobs the govern ment reported Friday. Joblessness dropped 0.1 percentage Points from february s 7.3 percent As civil Ian employment Rose to 108.8 million jobs in March the labor department said. The decline had been widely anticipated by economists who had viewed the 0.6 percentage Point jump in unemployment from january to february As an aberration due to unusually Large layoffs in the Oil and Gas Industry and to flooding in California. The Bureau of labor statistics said a 170,000-Job increase in agricultural employment to nearly 1.7 million seasonally adjusted reversed february s weather re lated declines. The Agency said however that total civilian employment was virtually unchanged after the seasonal adjustments were re moved from its calculations. The Bureau said this was True even though the number of non agricultural jobs As measured by a separate business Survey edged up by about 190,000. Meanwhile the number of people who have Given up looking for work dropped by 90,000, from the last three months of 1985 to the first three months of this year to 1,097,000. Those discouraged workers have not sought work in the last six months and Are not considered part of the labor Force on which the unemployment rate is based. The government listed 8,419,000 people As officially unemployed last month Down 108,000 from february but still Well ahead of the 7,831,000 in january. Employment in the mining Industry which includes Oil and Gas workers continued its dramatic drop a result of falling Petroleum prices. The department said 30,000 jobs were lost last month cutting employment in the mining Industry to 900,000, the lowest level since june 1978. While the Economy created 227,000 jobs last month More than half were accounted for by the increase in the civilian labor Force of 119,000 to 117.2 million. A prostitution charges were dropped Friday against two female Brown University seniors arrested in an alleged sex for hire ring. The attorney general s office dropped the charges against Dana e. Smith 21, of Avon conn., and Rebecca r. Kidd 21, of Orange conn., during a pretrial hearing in Providence District court. The women were arrested March 6 and charged with loitering for prostitution a Misdemeanour. Each had pleaded innocent to the charge and neither appeared at the courthouse Friday. Their arrests sparked an investigation of a possible City wide prostitution ring involving As Many As 46 women six of whom police identified As current or former Stu dents at the Ivy league school. No other arrests have been made but a grand jury has heard testimony in the Case. The state did not give specific reasons for dropping the charges but in court papers cited a Rule allowing for prosecutor Al discretion in disposing of cases. Repeated attempts to reach a spokesman for the attorney general s office were unsuccessful. A Secretary said the spokesman was Busy on another line. Lawyer Peter a. Providence police say information sup plied by the women led to a raid of a Condo minium on Providence s fashionable East Side where Brown is located.
