   European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - April 5, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse                                Saturday april 5, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 7 four children among 10 killed in fires by United press International Home fires in six states thursday killed 10 people four of them children authorities said. Twelve people were injured in the blazes. Three people were killed at a House fire in new Hamp Shire and two children and their grandmother died when flames swept their two Story Home in Pennsylvania. Fires in Illinois Ohio new York and Missouri claimed one life each two of them children. In Berlin n.h., a fire sent flames gushing from sever Al windows of a two Story House killing Joseph Saseen his wife Margaret and her elderly Mother Beatrice Mckay. Saseen was believed to be in his 60s, his  her 50s and her Mother in her 80s. A police officer and firefighter suffered minor injuries. The Blaze s cause has yet to be determined. In Nanticoke pa., Wayne Getz jr., 12, his sister Melissa 6, and their grandmother Alice Getz 69, were killed and three other family members injured when a fire engulfed the top floor of a two Story Wood Frame House. The fire apparently was caused by a Short circuit in an electric Heater in the bedroom shared by Melissa Getz and her grandmother authorities said. The father of the children Wayne Getz sr., 36, was injured in an attempt to save the youngsters. He was hospitalized in critical condition. Getz s wife Barbara 36, and a third child Jason 11, were hospitalized treated and released. In Herrin 111., 8-year-old Dusty Feezor was killed the Day after his birthday and four other family members were injured in a fire that heavily damaged a one Story Home without a smoke Detector. The boy s father Reggie Feezor 38, and Ryan Barnes 8, who firefighters said was a Cousin of the Feezor were hospitalized in critical condition. Janice Feezor 32, Mother of the victim was hospitalized in stable condition. A daughter identified As Joie Feezor 15, was hospitalized treated and released. The Blaze broke out in the Back of the Southern Illinois House near the Kitchen and Utility room. The cause of the fire has not been determined. In Yonkers n.y., a Man visiting a three Story apart ment building that was under renovation died in a fire that caused $100,000 damage to the Structure. Edward Hogan 37, died of smoke inhalation in the fire which apparently started in the cellar. In Cleveland 2-year-old Tamara Dill died in a Blaze at a two Story Brick House. Three firefighters were treated for minor injuries. The fire s cause has not yet been determined. In a subdivision Northwest of Parkville mo., near Kan Sas City a 37-year-old Man apparently was overcome by smoke when he tried to flee a ranch House ravaged by fire. A Man told authorities he was in a car parked outside the House when he heard a loud explosion. Firefighters said the victim whose identity has yet to be released died at the scene. Authorities have yet to determine the Blaze s cause. 29 Hurt 90 arrested in Berkeley apartheid not Berkeley Calif. A anti apart Heid demonstrators hurled bottles rocks and eggs at Baton wielding police officers thursday in a clash that led to 90 arrests 29 injuries and the destruction of a shanty town on the University of California Cam pus. Two men were arrested and charged with the Possession of firebombs after police received a threat that California Hall would be burned Down. Charred paper was found in the Gas tanks of three University cars authorities reported. About 1,000 people later gathered at a peaceful rally to hear protest leaders Call for a student strike monday and vow to rebuild the Shantytown that has been torn Down twice by University police. The conflict began before Dawn when police placed dozens of demonstrators in buses to be taken to Alameda county s Santa Rita jail according to University spokesman Ray Colvig. Hundreds of other protesters surrounded the buses preventing them from moving he said. About 7 30 a.m., police in riot gear cleared a path through the crowd. Fighting broke out As demonstrators hurled bottles rocks and eggs and blocked the buses by hurling trash cans setting up makeshift barricades and sitting in the Way. Eleven protesters and 18 police officers suffered minor injuries that included cuts and bruises said University spokesman Tom Debley. Colvig said one of the injured claimed to be a news photographer. I saw a photographer get clubbed and the blood sprayed All Over his camera and clothes said a student affiliated with a group called Campaign against apartheid. He said police threw and clubbed people out of the  Alameda county sheriffs sgt. William Gonzales said 88 protesters were taken by bus to Santa Rita to be booked. Colvig said about 50 others were photographed and would be subject to arrest later. Bond was set at $7,250 for each protes Ter each charged with one felony count of a photo an anti apartheid demonstrator Peers out of a broken window on a sheriffs bus on the Berkeley Campus. Last month University re gents voted to sell $12.3 million in Eaton corp. Bonds on the recommendation of an investment review committee appointed last year to determine How companies in which the University invests handle their South african operations. Dea to approve pot based drug for cancer patients Washington a the drug enforcement administration said thursday it will give formal approval later this month for cancer patients undergoing chemo therapy to buy an anti nausea drug derived from marijuana. Dea spokesman Tom Dougherty said a notice will be published in the Federal Register reclassifying the drug from schedule i a narcotic not usable for any purpose to schedule ii a controlled substance available by prescription for specific medical purposes. The change will allow doctors to prescribe and patients to buy marinol a capsule version of tetrahydrocannabinol or the the Active ingredient in marijuana. The action comes after the National organization for Reform of marijuana Laws withdrew a petition objecting to the Dea s handling the drug. The petition would have required lengthy hearings on the reclassification. Normal which wants marijuana legalized said it dropped the petition after the Dea promised in writing to let an administrative Law judge decide the broader ques Tion of whether marijuana itself should be reclassified to allow its use for medical purposes. Dougherty confirmed that the matter has been referred to an administrative Law judge. United inc., the Somerville n.j., pharmaceutical com Pany that produces marinol said the rescheduling of the drug will activate a marketing agreement with Roxane laboratories inc., of Columbus Ohio. Paul v. Bollenbacher United president and chief executive said marinol will initially be marketed regionally with initial distribution scheduled to Start in about 30 Days in selected Urban areas.". The food and drug administration last june approved marinol for use by cancer patients undergoing chemo therapy. Clinical trials showed it was effective in control Ling the nausea and vomiting that accompany the treat ment the Fra said. But the drug could not be sold until the Dea reclassified it from schedule i to schedule ii. That process expected to be completed quickly last fall stopped abruptly when Normal filed its objections. Kevin Zeese Normal National director said the organization objected to the Dea s considering a Brand name drug rather than the itself and to special restrictions the Agency wanted to put on marinol that would not apply to other schedule drugs. He said the organization also was protesting what he described As the Dea s failure to comply with a court order requiring hearings on the classification of marijuana itself. Zeese said the group withdrew its petition after getting written promises from the Dea. That the question of Mari Juana s classification would be considered
