The faulty key washers May have been placed in up to 64 f-15s and f-16s, said Bruce Richter Deputy division chief of the propulsion management division. Kelly spokeswoman Phebe Brown said there was no disruption of flight operations because of the faulty washers. Spare engines were available to keep the aircraft flying she said. The jets engines were worked on at Kelly and then transported to other air Force bases for re installation in the jets she said. The 64 engines suspected of having faulty washers were removed from the jets inspected and fitted with new washers when necessary she said. Some of the planes May have been flying a month before the recall Richter told the san Antonio Light but there were no engine failures because of the washers. The recall initiated in March has Cost the air Force $1.5 million in labor and the Cost of the 47,320 washers was $39,748.80, Richter said. The faulty parts were supplied by a san Antonio contractor that Richter refused to name. Air Force lawyers Are considering Legal action he said. Workers at Kelly began installing the parts in december. A Mechanic in the f-100 engine maintenance shop spotted the problem with the washers when he noticed tabs on the sides of the parts broke easily when they were Bent into place Richter said. Nine key washers go into each Turbine of the $3 million f-100 engine. If a Tab on a Washer had broken during flight the engine could have exploded.
