In a speech to the annual meeting of the association of Community cancer centers in Washington Nixon said medical discoveries Are not limited by National boundaries and they should never be limited by National the organization gave Nixon an award for his contribution to Community cancer care citing his support for cancer research during his presidency. Whatever the country is whatever its system we should cooperate in attacking disease generally and particularly cancer Nixon said. Nixon said while the two nations have particularly deep differences and interests totally opposed to each other the United states and the soviet Union share a foe in cancer. Nixon said he was deeply moved by the cancer deaths of a number of friends which led him in 1971 to sign into Law the National cancer act making the fight against the disease a National priority. Federal spending on cancer research since that time has risen from $230 million a year to $1.25 billion today Nixon said. Nixon described the last time he saw former Secretary of state John Foster Dulles on May 20,. 1959 at Walter Reed Hospital where Dulles was suffering from terminal cancer. Nixon said he asked Dulles about what he should say to soviet Leader Nikita Khrushchev at their meeting the Fol lowing month in Moscow.
