Although i am in the air Force and not the army i understand How the writer feels. It is a constant Battle having to prove yourself when you Are a female. If a male gets angry it is righteous Indig nation. If a female does it is called getting if a male must Rush his child to the doctor he is being a Good and responsible Parent. If a female does she is mooch ing off the government. If a male gets a Choice assignment he earned it. If a female does it was pure Luck. When the new officer coming in is male everyone is wondering what he will be like. If the new officer is female there is mass groaning at having to work for a woman and no wondering at All. The problem is not in the regulations and established programs. It is in the prevailing attitudes of personnel you Are working for and with. The reply had nothing to do with the letter that was printed. The writer does t ship is a Cruiser i would like to Point out an error that appeared in a recent Issue of the stars and stripes. In this Issue the Thomas Gates was erroneously called a guided missile frigate. She is in fact an Aegis class Cruiser cg-51. Navy it. Peter j. She said that when she did it was belittled and ridiculed and that rather than being treated equally on the Job she is Given tasks considered fitting for females according to prevail ing attitudes. Preferential treatment has always generated resentment with co workers. Amazingly enough the woman is usually blamed for it As if she intentionally went out of her Way to get it when All she did was be born a female. This is especially galling when she would rather be slugging through the mud with the others. Not that filing typing or whatever she got stuck with does not have to be done it does. But Why is it the majority of people think that it is a woman s Job and base their decisions on that concept Why does a woman usually get assigned those jobs with the resulting resentment and ill feeling to haunt her is the basis for assignment a fair one or is there a tendency to make prejudgment based on gender this question is difficult to prove and most people when confronted with it will say they did it As a favor. They assumed that was what she wanted. Did they try to please the men the same Way it is doubtful if you re a Soldier you re a Soldier. The military Complex is an equal Opportunity employer but it has to work in actual practice at the working level. Only a change in attitudes at All Levels will change that and those women in the military now will have to be the ones that Force the changes for others that follow. Don t get me wrong there has been an incredible improvement since i came in and not All people Are so chauvinistic. I have been fortunate to meet a few truly enlightened people and know what a differ ence it can make in a woman s career. Too bad those individuals Are the exception and not the Rule but their numbers Are growing. However you deserve a better reply than the one you received. By All Means com Plain but Don t drop it there and leave the service with a pout. You prove them right then. Get in there and fight for tomorrow like the ones before you fought for you. Work on bringing about changes today so our daughters can serve their country just like our sons without a stigma attached. Tech sgt. Lira k. Carnahan Aviano a Italy i just finished Reading a letter in the stars and stripes from a sergeant. I was shocked by the rhetoric riddled and insensitive reply. The response was a shining example of the Root cause of the Soldier s frustration with the . Army. Her problem at least As was stated was not with the army promotion system but with the attitudes displayed by the male soldiers around her. She is quite right to feel frustrated with the army. I am and degrading remarks All too Many times More often than not expressed by senior cos and officers instead of Junior enlisted soldiers. Wake up this is 1986. There is no such thing As a woman s place in the army. It s time that those tired archaic Paterna Listic dinosaurs that believe in the Wom an s place retire to the we lose Good soldiers every Day because of these antiquated ideals and attitudes. If it weren t for the increasing number of enlightened cos and officers in today s army there would not be such noteworthy statistics to Point out. Even so there Are still those dinosaurs and neanderthals who use every trick in the Book to covertly de Grade and demean soldiers. With the constant threat of communism and terrorism hanging Over our collective Heads we Don t need dinosaurs and neanderthals we need Well trained and highly motivated soldiers. To the letter responder if you can t dazzle them with your brilliance at least try to understand their predicament. To the sergeant Don t let those non professionals get you Down. Out Soldier them and before too Long you la either Lead them or replace them. Good Luck. Sec. Bruce e. Banks Berlin editor s note or. Sue Guenter Schlesinger leadership Branch office of Deputy chief of staff personnel he Usa eur replies unfortunately traditional notions of male and female roles Are still very much with us both in the army and in the civil Ian world. These culturally ingrained ideas Start Early in our lives. By the time we enter the army Many of us have already Learned and believe that men Are simply Superior to women that they Are leaders and women Are followers and that women need to be protected. We May want to deny that these and other stereotypes Are being reinforced today but a Quick Check of reality shows that this is the Case. Yes it s time we eliminate sex role stereotyping on both sides male and female and it s up to men and women alike to do this. Men need to begin accepting women in the army As qualified soldiers unless they prove themselves differently. The army has no time for judging a person on an arbitrary criterion like sex nor can we afford to limit a person s performance and level of responsibility based on stereotypical when we reflect on and accurately understand soldiers values courage Candor competence and commitment we will see that there is no room in our army for prejudice or discrimination of any kind. Good leadership depends on viewing each individual separately and providing that person the Opportunity to achieve to their fullest capabilities. Yes we do care Here and so do most of us in the army. 29 and a technician. Paul Goldhaber Dean of the Harvard school of dental Medicine. I m Rush ing it into print at the earliest possible moment with my apologies. I fear i have done or. Gold Haber the dental profession and ple interested in implants an injustice by misinterpreting a sentence and deleting a crucial statement in his response. Here is the Dean s recent letter dear Ann Landers i have two problems with your column pertaining to dental implantation about which you consulted me. First i am not one of the country s most knowledgeable men in the Field of Den Tal implantation before 1 wrote to you i did however discuss your letter with the head of our department of dental in Pantol orgy who is an expert in the Field. Your column stated that a successful implant will last approximately five years this is a very pessimistic statement and is not exactly what i said. What i did say was that a successful implant technique has been defined As one that provides functional service for five years in 75 percent of the cases this does not mean that it May not last Many More years beyond that time. Furthermore i stated experienced implant to Logiste now claim higher Success rates with a variety of implant techniques this sentence was deleted and is crucial to the discussion. I am writing again because i am concerned that the Public will get a somewhat distorted signal regarding the Efficacy and potential Benefit of dental implants. I do agree with your comment your dream of having a Complete set of implanted Teeth and never again needing to see a dentist is totally unrealistic on the other hand i do not want to paint such a negative picture so that individuals who can truly Benefit from these new approaches Are frightened away. Is there anything you can do to give the subject a More balanced report card with All Best wishes Paul dear Paul by explaining the misinterpreted sen tence and publishing the crucial sentence that was dropped in the interest of space i believe we have Given a More accurate Pic Ture of the implantation technique. I would like to add that i have received Many letters from readers who Are delighted with the results of their implantation and recommend it highly. Thank you for urging me to set the re Cord straight.
