World driving Champion Alain Frost s Vic tory last sunday in the san Marino grand prix proved that there s some Justice in this world at least once in a while. Prost you May recall also won last year s san Marino up but was disqualified because his Mclaren porsche was found just under the minimum weight limit. This was anything but Prost s fault. So his Victory sunday seemed Only fair in All respects. The Frenchman also was the Winner of the 1984 san Marino up so the Imola circuit is obviously one of his favourites. The san Marino Auto club uses the Imola circuit near Bologna Italy for its grand prix. Prost s win was the 22nd of his career. He is Only six Short of breaking the Long standing record of 27 grand prix victories held by Scotland s Jackie Stewart. Prost had a big scare on the final Lap of sunday s race when he realized he was running out of Gas. He zigzagged his Mclaren on the final two turns to help the engine pick up Gas and that worked. He stopped his car a few feet past the line after he took the Check ered Flag. The tank was empty. Afterwards Prost said his computer read out win Dow indicated he had three liners of Gas left but the computer was wrong. It s comforting to know that computers can be wrong. Prost was Lucky indeed but his teammate Keke Rosberg of Finland was not. Rosberg ran out of Gas with two laps to go while engaged in a mighty Strug Gle for second place with Brazil s Nelson Piquet Wil Liams Ford. Rosberg and Piquet who led the first half of the race were putting on a great show and it was pathetic to see the Issue decided by an empty fuel Lank. It s also unfair to the Drivers. Although there must be rules it s my opinion that limiting Gas should not be one of them. Grand prix racing today is entertainment just As All big time sports Are and the fans Are cheated when they see races decided by empty Gas tanks Prost who failed to finish the brazilian up opener but who took third in Spain said after his Victory i drove a very Good race a race that was Tough on tires and brakes. I m especially Happy be cause this race proved that our porsche engine still is very  it was the Mclaren team s first Victory in the 1986 Campaign but it won t be its last. As i wrote in last week s column the championship will be fought out strictly by the Williams Lotus and Mclaren teams and i be predicted Williams will win it. The Williams Honda team Boss Frank Williams by the Way is reported to be in Good spirits and making Progress from Auto Accident injuries suffered in Early March. Piquet Winner of the opening brazilian round in his Williams Honda placed second in the san Marino race but said he was slowed by clutch problems. When i stopped at the pits to change tires i did t think i d get going again Piquet said. His Stop took some 14 seconds As opposed to a lightning Quick 8 second Stop for Prost. At the end the clutch was about gone Piquet said and j Only had two liners of Gas left when i tried to catch Prost on the last  Piquet s brazilian rival Ayrton Senna captured pole position at Imola making it three out of three this season. Tied with Piquet in the title Chase Senna dropped out Early at Imola when the rear wheel Bear Ings failed on his Lotus Renault. I noted last week that the san Marino up would provide the debut for the new Ford co Worth Turbo engine. This debut was anything but auspicious. Unlike 1967 when the Lotus Ford co Worth 3-liter won the dutch grand prix in its debut the Lola Ford Turbo car retired Early in its san Marino appearance. Australian Alan Jones drove the Lola Ford his teammate Patrick Tam Bay of France stayed with the Lola Hart but Jones managed to qualify Only 21st in the 26-car Field. In the race the new Turbo engine apparently ran Well enough but Jones was forced to retire the Lola with a split Radiator and broken gear shift linkage. Another disappointment involved the German Zak Speed team with a two car entry for the first time since it entered grand prix racing last year. Both Jonathan Palmer of Britain the regular Zak Speed Driver and Hub Rothengatter of Holland now in the second car retired Early with engine problems. O the next round is the grand prix of Monaco on May 11, the Glamor race on the grand prix Trail. It takes place right on the streets of Monte Carlo. Going into the Monaco round the two brazilian Drivers Piquet and Senna Are tied for the driving championship with 15 Points each. Next comes Prost with 13 Points. Englishman Nigel Mansell Williams Honda and austrian Gerhard Berger Benetton Bow follow with six Points each. Finland s Rosberg has five Points Jacques Laffite of France Ligier Renault four Points Stefan Johansson of Sweden Ferrari and Rene Arnoux of France Ligier Ren Ault three each Teo Fabi of Italy Benetton Bow and Martin Brundle of England Tyrrell Renault two each and Riccardo Patrese of Italy Brabham Bow one Point. In the formula one constructor s championship the Williams team leads with 21 Points. Mclaren follows with 18 and Lotus third with 15.
