The researchers said the statistics for College cocaine use remained virtually unchanged since 1980. However use of other drugs has dropped significantly on Campus. The proportion of College students using marijuana in the year before the Survey fell from 51 percent in 1980 to 41 percent. Active daily marijuana use fell by More than one half from 7.2 percent in 1980 to 3.1 percent in 1985. The study also found declines in the use of methaqualone or of alludes from 7.2 percent in 1980 to 1,4 percent in 1985 barbiturates from 2.9 percent to 1.3 percent and Ranqui Lizars from 6.9 percent to 3.s per cent during the same Lime period. The study found that College students were More Likely than their non College Peers to report heavy bouts of drinking Bui College students smoke less than their non College Peers. The study was conducted for the National Institute on drug abuse by the University of Michigan s Institute for social research and grew out of a 10-year series of surveys of drug use by High school seniors. Aboul 1,100 College students were interviewed each year from 1980 to 1985. The results have a margin of error of less than 3 percentage Points. Among College women the daily smoking rate was 18 percent last year compared with 10 percent for men. The College portion of the study ignored older Stu dents who make up about 15 percent of the Campus population but Johnston said that had Little effect on the results
