European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - September 17, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 18 columns the stars and stripes wednesday. September 17.1986 a Carpenter s Humble decision Brand Rooney Pamela Bankert a third year Law student at Rutgers University and Rupert Brandt a Carpenter were mar ried the other Day according o the new York headline read Pamela Bankert weds. No men Ever get wed in the times just women. It does t say a thing in the headline about Rupert getting hitched too. Most society pages in newspapers put Marc emphasis on women than men. Youdon t see pictures of the Guy All dressed up in wed Ding clothes. It s always Ine picture of the girl in her wedding dress. I resent this. Men gel married just As often Ai women and when they do it s just Asim portent. I Don t know Why society editors think it smore important to Tell people a woman got married. The Short Story or Pamela banker s wedding leaves a lol of unanswered questions. How does a third year Law student get to know a Carpenter can a lawyer find happiness with a Carpenter and if so can a Carpenter find happiness with a lawyer one thing Pamela is sure w find when the phone begins ringing off the Hook in their House is thai lawyers arc a dime a dozen but everyone is trying to find a Carpenter the most interesting part of this wedding Story is the last line. The couple the Story ends will we the surname Why do you suppose is Rupert just an easygoing Guy who went along with the suggestion they use he family name instead of his arc there any class Over Ion in this s Pam s family reluctant to Haw her take the name of a Carpenter Don t envy Robert the rest of his life. From now on people will ask him what was your name before you were married is there on equiv Alent lathe phrase Maiden name for a Man or. Brandt s parents apparently Are divorced be cause the Story says he s the son of Harvey Brandt of Somerville n.j., and Pauline Perkins of Brockton mass we Don t know from the item whether a Mother Pauline reassured her Maiden name or remarried someone named Perkins. I think the times owed us quite a bit More or quite a bit less on this Story. The idea of a Man taking a woman s name is new to me. I d probably be a mate chauvinist pig in Glo Ria Steinem s pretty Blue eyes to oppose the idea but if the practice becomes popular it s going to cause a Tot of confusion. Having the woman assume theman s name May be unfair to women but it is the established Way of doing things and to change ingoing to play havoc with Public records. When Pant and Rupert s children grow up and ten in the Little Box they re going to think the ban Kert children made a careless mistake. A great Many progressive women continue to use their Maiden names in business. This is understandable. Most of them officially adopt their husband s name for the purpose of signing Legal documents and Christmas cards. This makes Good sense. Still other couples decide to join their two names with a Hyphen to create a third name. If Pamela an Rupert had chosen this course they now would be Pamela and Rupert Bankert Brandl. This May see like a solution but it s a shortsighted one. It causes trouble Down the line. Say for example that Pamela and Rupert Bankert Brant had a child name Darcy Bankert Brandl. Darcy grows up and Falls in love with a Young Man whose parents also had by pc hated their names. The Young Man s name is Peter Palmer Williams if Darcy insists she and her husband share their two names their names Becomer. And mis. Bankert a not Palmer Williams. If god forbid Pam and Rupert s marriage does t Tost i wonder if Rupert will retain his married name to Tig unt it Jig Sov kit youth today want if Oil today Byar Buchwald much has been written lately about College graduates who Art More interested in making a million dollars than serving their fellow men. There is a Good reason for this Young Ernst Bentwood said. If we Don t make the million one of our classmates the senior Bentwoods recently gave a party for Ernst who received his mba diploma from the Wharton school at the University of Pennsylvania. When i congratulated him i said i have one word to say to you Ernst plastics have taken a downturn he replied the Only Way i can make it in plastics is to become an investment banker and merge plastics with soy Beans and get mine on top from a leveraged then your Only goal in life is to make a bundle not necessarily. I would like to improve society. I m still looking at the peace that sounds Good. What country do you want to go to when you join i Don t want to join the peace corps i want to be a paid consultant. A fellow i went to school with has just signed a 1100,000 contract to advise the corps on what languages people speak in various countries about the what happens if you Don t gel a consultant s Job with the peace corps "1 still want to do some Community service. But it has to pay extremely Well or they can forget Ems i select in you a sense of wanting to climb the ladder of Success very fast without paying he was taken Aback. Ralph Lauren does t sell his Polo suits for food sumps. Why do you need to Wear Polo garments so Early in your career because a company is not going to hire me at 195,000 a year if i Don t dress like someone who can afford it. Would you begrudge me a few designer suits As i Rise to the top no i would t. But Fey Crone who graduated from College was Only interested in making Money this coun try would be in sorry shape. I should have thought your professors would have taught you that Why should they our professors Are making even More Money than we How can they be they Are Oil moonlighting As consultants for Large american companies at enormous no matter when we Start the subject always keeps coming Back to "1 notice that too Ernst said. My Fiancee Sarah says that s All i Ever talk about.
