   European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - September 17, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse                                Wednesday september 17, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 3 deadline nears for travel program military gives students free trips to visit parents by Brenda Hoste staff writer College students in the states who want to visit parents working for the military overseas Are running out of time time for their families to apply for a funded student travel program that can get the students a free trip to Europe for the holidays. The program allows for one paid round trip ticket within a 12-month period for qualifying students. The 12 month deadline starts on the firs Day of the first leg of the travel. Students sponsored by soldiers and airmen qualify for the travel if their sponsor is stationed outside the so United states and District of Colum Bia if sponsors Are serving a with de Pendents tour and if they arc accompanied by command sponsored family members. Students of Navy and civilian Dod employee families also May apply for the program. Requirements vary among the services. For students visiting army sponsors the travel request must be made 60days in Advance. When the sponsor is a civilian employee the request must be placed 30 Days ahead of the travel. The air Force will Cut travel orders for the student As soon As the student s status is verified the Navy has a similar policy. All students must be single under 23 years of age and enrolled in a College in the United states for the purpose of obtaining an undergraduate degree. Each service allows for shipment of 22s pounds of unaccompanied bag Gage. Students of civilian employees serving in a foreign area arc allowed up to 350 pounds of unaccompanied bag Gage. In most cases the students will Fly military Airlift come chartered air Craft when available. The program also includes funded travel for those students of sponsors stationed outside the United states who Are allowed to have dependents reside at or in the Vicinity of a Home port or ship s permanent duty station. This includes a family member who attends a dormitory school operated by Dod or is att ending a school selected by Dodds. Navy and Marine corps personnel submit their requests to the commander . Navy Europe for approval. Required information includes student s name social Security number passport number name and location of school location of student Point where travel starts and Date of travel and the sponsor s name social Security number Branch of service and duty station. Sponsors with family members who attend secondary school must submit their applications to their local commander. Once travel is approved by the commander . Navy Europe the sponsor arranges the Stu Dent s transportation. Students May Call the nearest base personnel of fice for assistance.
