The happiest of All times was when she would Sil me on her bed on sunday mornings and loll fascinating stories Ghoul How life was when she was a Little girl. One sunday morning i was about 8 at the time our conversation got around to age. She Lold me that she wanted to live to be 70 years old and she hoped that then the lord would Lake her because old age is a Burden to i m sure she did l realize what an Impact such a statement would have on a Small child who loved her very much. I was truly upset because she was 65 at the time. Twenty years later on grandma s 85th birthday we All rallied around her bedside As she quietly passed away. Her last words were life is so a.b.c., Lombard ill what i hem Winner. Hen s another dear Ann Landers this is for made my decision in the i Hope this letter will change her mind. I was intimately in a similar year my father age 77, committed suicide for the same reason. He told us several limes that he had lived Long enough and the Quality of his life was sure to deteriorate. He dreaded burying his friends and suffer ing the Vindigni lies of old age. Mother had died six years before and he missed her terribly in Spile of the fact that he had an Active life and Many Good friends. Physically and mentally he was healthy and Active. Financially he was secure. Bui As time went on he let us know that life was becoming increasingly meaningless and it was gelling harder and harder for him to keep going. One night he ended it All. I am an Only child in my mid-40s, with no children of my own. Daddy and i were very dose. Did i feel abandoned and or relieved no. Neither did i feel any anger or betrayal. His was not an irrational act done in momentary depression. It was his life and his decision. How could i say he was wrong 1 Only Hope he went without guilt and that he knew nothing could Lessen my love for him. Perhaps the reason i am writing this is because so Many friends have been unable to understand my father s motive or my quiet acceptance of his decision. If you publish this letter please Donot Semy name or who understood dear one Here it is. Your father would be proud of your nobility of spirit. To be so understanding in the face of such a Brave loss is extraordinary. Dear Ann Landers i am writing in regard to the letter from made my decision in the 1 Hope that you got through to her Ann. Army tour of duty in West Germany i attended an officer professional development tour of the Battle of Floc Hul Carca in Belgium. Our group of officers also visited Gen. Pattern s grave in Luxembourg i remember it Ihal my Uncle died in world War to somewhere in 1 ranch. 1 asked the attendant at the visitors Center if he could find out where my Uncle was buried. The attendant pulled out i Ufa with thousands of names of soldiers who had fallen in Ger Many France Belgium and the Netherlands and were buried in military cemeteries la Only look a few moments to find inc information thai 1 was looking for. He told me that my Uncle Elwyn m. Nichols from Toledo Ohio was buried in the Lorrain american cemetery in St. Avoid Francc. With this newly found information i Sel out to do More research on my Uncle s unit and made plans to visit his grave in France. I requested leave and made plans for my wife and me to visit France. Things were complicated by recent terrorist bombings in France the week before our planned trip. The French government announced lightened Security measures at its Border. When we arrived at the Lorrain american cemetery i became very excited about visiting my dead Uncle s grave. I was the first family member to do so in inc 41 years since his death on March 16, 1945. We found the cemetery grounds and visitors Center very Well cared for. The attendant on duly was an american who could not have been nicer. He locked up the visitors Center and escorted us to my Uncle s grave. When we arrived at the grave the attendant came to attention and saluted the White Cross thai was inscribed with my Uncle s name unit Home state and Dale of death. It was late afternoon and the Sun was setting behind the More than 10,000 White crosses the attendant suggested a hotel in town and invited us to come Back the next morning to take pictures with he morning Sun shining on the front of the Cross. We found the hotel very Nice. We had been a Little reluctant to make the trip with All the publicized terrorism. However we found the French people of St. Avoid very Friendly. We enjoyed their hospitality but a Crit a not to push our Luck and avoided Paris. The next morning we returned to the cemetery and found a different attendant on duty a Frenchman who spake perfect English and was equally accommodating As the gentleman we had Mcl the previous any. Prior to our arrival he had ribbed Sand from the Normandy Beach into the inscription on my Uncle s Cross so it could be easily read in inc photographs. He also had taken two pictures when the Sun was at the perfect Angle and prepared a folder with the photos and information about the cemetery. He assisted me in researching some his top books to determine where my Uncle s unit was fighting on the Day thai he died. As it turned out the town where he had fallen was not far from St. Avoid. We drove there and retraced inc route of his unit the 143rd inf 36ih div. This whole experience was very moving and inter Esting for me. Although i had not Ever met this Uncle my father s brother fell driven to learn As much As i could about him and his unit. Being a military Man for Over 18 years i have a great Deal of respect and Admi ration for our War dead those Young men that made the ultimate sacrifice for All americans and Freedom Loving people of the world. The soldiers of my Uncle s unit fought heroically in Battles at an7.io, Italy before moving to fight their Way through Southern France during a harsh Winter. My Uncle died just six Days before his unit crossed into Germany and Only one and one half months before the end of inc War. Pvt. Elwyn m. Nichols from Toledo Ohio was a hero in my eyes. He gave his life fighting for the free Dom that we All enjoy today. No it is not too Lale to remember the sacrifices of Uncle Elwyn and thousands like him they died in the line of duly fighting for Freedom Loving people around the world.
