If you re for a record Mode Tay to Bellamy Brothers iry sending in something homemade As barter. Vou May a surprised at lha result at least one african Tan was when is received an up and More when he sen i in a toy skin covered drum to David and Howard s fan club. They have sent records and made these special people honorary members of their Ian club. We Don t have to do that or every record Howard said we still have the it seat that unusual things Are always happening to he Bellamy. For instance they once had a topless dancer come on unannounced to them at least during a live to performance in Amsterdam As David Ells it there was a big circus Rock show. We did rehearsals that afternoon Pant miming let your love flaw and everything was Cool and we went to the Bellamy a have seen the world and gotten paid for dinner it was going to be live that night. We came Back and started the show and were moving our lips to let your love flow he said when he and Howard suddenly found the dancer standing Between them. I never did figure out what that had o do with that song. We smiled All the Way through it. It was Welcome to Holland said Howard. The Bellamy have become accustomed to expecting the Bizarra when performing on live to in Europe where countries such As Germany Howard s wife is German Are local Points of their marketing thrust. They have been to Europe once or More in each of the past 10 years since their 1976 Megahid. Let your love flow the Bellamy of course Are big country artists in America but they tailor their act to the divergent audiences. In Europe they do wild stuff burlesque vaudeville mixed with Rock n Roll and country David said but How Ore the fan different m Central Europe in some ways the reaction is similar Between fans at a Nebraska slate fair and Centre Europe David said. The main thing is the language. But even that is broken Down when they know the songs the audiences there like to sing it s real weird. They love trucking songs the top country band in Germany is called truck Slop the Market does t seem wide open for real traditional Type country music such As Bluegrass they love old Rock n Roll which we consider country Jerry Lee Law Selvis Roy the Bellamy take that into consideration when they Cut their is we always put two cuts on an album thai will be right for that Market David said we have a taste for what they prefer. Veve gone Over there enough so the Market is not strange o last year they cancelled part of a series of appearances in Europe but it had nothing to do with the fans. It was right when we bombed Libya Howard said. The stale department had advised Southern Pacific another country act to go Home 3o we Cut Short our the Bellamy will go Back to Europe this Spring. We were in our 20s and had never been out of Florida when we had our first hit. One of the things we wanted to do was see the world we have seen the world and gotten paid for ii. What More can you ask Howard said. The Bellamy Brothers will perform throughout Europe at the International country music festival in april. See the on slags pages in stripes Magazine for details. The human league not just a one hit wonder by Sandy Adzgery associated Pressi t took two cities two producers two years and a final showdown in the studio for the human league to Complete their fourth up crash. Alter nine months in London working with producer Colin Thurston they scrapped the tapes and moved to Minneapolis to work Wilh Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis one of the hottest american production teams Wilh hits by Janet Jackson and Force ads to their credit. But the band became uncomfortable As the american producers took total control not allowing the human league any input. It ended with an argument and the group retreating Home to England producers have ultimate control said Joanne Catherall at the Home she shares with Lead Singer Philip Oakey in the Northern England town of Sheffield. They told us they would mix our songs our Way but we d have no say in the songs they had written there was no Point in staying because we knew we d been beaten the 24-year-old Singer said. If we thought we could sit in the studio glaring at Jimmy and he d give in we would have done Onkey 31, try thai although Here was an argument the majority of their time with Jam and Lewis was productive i Learned More in Lour months with Jimmy and Terry than t have in live years he think even More of them now that we re Back in England. When i get depressed about the album now t phone Jimmy and he says. I Don l know what you re worried about. It s doing great Over Here in americ and he s the first single from the album human hit the top 10 on music charts. Us Success has made the band consider leaving Sheffield to take up residence in los Angeles. We wanted to stay in England but the Way things look at the moment we Ere going to have More Success with the album and he single in America Catherall said. Ii that s he Case we need to seriously think of moving where the Market Susan Sulley the third Singer in the group agreed with Catherall but Oakey is convinced it s wrong to abandon their Hometown if Sheffield is Boring it s up to us to change it. We Are Selling loads of records in America and we did t have to move there to do in 1982, the group had a no. 1 one up dare and a hot Selling single in Don i you want me without a television appearance and performing Only seven concerts. The Downside began with their next release fascination which reached no. 8 in fhe american charts. The followup hysteria Wes a disappointment with three singles Only making it into the British top 20, Catherall blamed the failure of hysteria on bad timing. If we had finished it in a couple of months like most people do it might have sold As Well As we expected the album took two years to Complete and was Oul of Date before it was released. Tension within the group escalated when guitarist and co songwriter to Callis quit leaving the human league s future in doubt. Founding member Adrian Wright recently left. He had been in charge of the slide show which augmented the group s concert. However Catherall said it did not jeopardize the group because Wright s slides did t fit with the new music the human league is Down to five members with bassist Tan Burden and drummer Jim Russell rounding out the group. They be also hired two Sheffield musicians to help on their recent British tour. The american leg of the Lour is planned for this month Oakey once said he thought of spilling the human league but now he s changed his mind. This album is the one that s proven he. it i.
