European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - January 22, 1987, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday january. J2, 1b87 the stars and stripes Page 21 prep pick n s it s make the move time in Dodds tournament time is almost a month away but some of the Dodds learns can help themselves considerably this weekend with key victories. If either Hahn or shape can pull a i weep this weekend in their showdown twin Bill at Hahn that club can All but sew up the Bennor boys championship. Both teams Are 6-0 and a sweep by either will give that team at least a share of the title and a guaranteed place in the Small schools basketball tournament at Munich feb. 12-14. The Bennor sends its league Champion and tournament Champion if la two teams Are different Onei to the Small schools meet. If the same team wins both the league and tournament then the no. 2 team in the tournament also advanced to Munich to join the top three teams from the Germany a Cen trial and a South leagues in both the girls and boy Competition. Munich won its fourth straight gins title last week and Gic Ssan won the boys title in its first year of Competition. Giessen and Munich Are still undefeated this sea son. Giessen s games Don t figure that much this week but Munich can Widen its Gap because it holds a one game Lead Over upcoming rival Ansbach. Asleep would move Munich which currently owns a 17-game winning string Overall to 6-0 and drop ans Bach to 5-3, Augsburg own a 3-1 league record and if Vilseck should upset the apaches twice the things would be even brighter for Emie Butler s Mustangs. Giessen entertains Oslo note which has t won league game yet but the Griffins big games Don t come until the next two weeks. Bad Kreuz Nach and Fulds Are still undefeated in a South boys Competition the Bra rats owning a 4-0 record while Fulda which was snowed out of action last week is 2-0. Ramstein which climbed Over two Gigantic hurdles with victories Over Stuttgart and Wiesbaden in its last two outings can bolster its cause considerably with a Friday win at Heidelberg because Stuttgart and Wiesbaden tangle with each other and Mann Heim is paired against Frankfurt in what could be another Tough game. Either Stuttgart or Wiesbaden will have three losses and a Frankfurt win Over Mannheim would give the Bison three setbacks. The Heidelberg girls also Are in pretty Good Posi Tion. They hold a game Lead Over Mannheim Heidel Berg owning a 6-1 record 10 Mannheim s 4-1. Every other team in the conference has lost at least two games. The a girls race however is three pronged Bat the right now with Patch and Wurzburg owning 4-0records and Hanau right on their heels with a 5-1 Mark. Some of that Puzzle can be resolved Over the weekend because Patch is at Haniu for head on action. Wuerzburg is at Baum older but the Baum Holder girls Don t appear to be the Powers of Floc last two Yean. Mannheim s Andre Green and Hanau s Gloria Wright win recognition As stars and stripes players of the week for their most recent achieve ments. Green had 21 Points 12 rebounds and two blocked shots Friday against Baum older and the turned in the Best game of his life according to coach Bill Mittenzwey tuesday night when the Bison whipped Stuttgart 69-50 in a key aaa game with a 24-Point, 17-rebound, 5-Block, 4-Dunk performance. Wright led Hanau to a pair of victories Over Owci Bruecken by turning in 26-Point. 12-rebound and 18 Point to rebound efforts in a a Competition. Albert Schweitzer Lime approaches again. Dick Mccann who finally won in 1985 after two previous misses As head coach is busily trying to assemble another Strong team As the . Guns for its sixth championship in the last eight tournaments. Since 1973, eight of America s Best High school cagers have been chosen to compete. And that elite list has included the likes of Kent Benson magic Johnson Jeff lamp Jeff Ruland Howard Jensen and Eric Turner to mention Only a very few who went on to collegiate and professional Fame. The teams since then have included four Dodds play ers. Sixteen teams mostly National Junior squads will be on hand for the 1987 version april 18-25 i Mannheim. Trying to dethrone the . Will be two teams from Germany and one each from Austria Belgium Bulgaria China Greece Italy Hungary Italy Poland Russia Spain Turkey and Yugoslavia. The 1985 americans dropped an in group Deci Sion to Yugoslavia but bounced Back to beat Turkey in the semifinals and then Hammer Yugoslavia 100-77 in the return match. That win gave the . A 46-3 record since the decision was made to bring some of America s elite High school cagers Over for the Schweitzer beginning in 1973. Before hat Dodds All Star Learnt used to represent the us in the tournament against the Junior National teams of the other nations involved and the yanks got thrashed time after time in the game we invented. A third place finish was the Best the Dodds per formers could achieve prior to 973, when the americans finally went All the Way. They repealed in 1975 and 1977, lost to Spain in 1979, won again in 1981, lost to Italy in 1983 and Hen clobbered the Yugo slavs in that Raven gel game in 19s5. Dodds Germany also has been invited to Send a team to the International tournament cadets basketball tournament at Cholet France april 18-20. Eight teams from France and one each from Italy Spain and Yugoslavia will join the americans in the tournament for players in the 15-16 age bracket. This will be the third consecutive year for the . Cagers. They finished second in 1985 and fourth Las year details concerning tryouts by Dodds students for both tournaments will be released at a later Date. As you readers Welt know i have always been for All kinds of tournaments Holiday and Post season for Dodds athletes because of the limited programs they Are offered. But i have to wonder if the tournament in Cholet does t actually fall into the same category As the Post season tournament like last years wrestling tournament at Naples that Dodds has been so Adamant in condemning. The Cholet tournament a very limited in that it is restricted to Dodds Germany athletes As opposed to All Dodds athletes like in All the other pcs Iea son events. Since we have no troops in France there is absolutely no Way it can be construed As a Host nation event. What s fair for one it seems to me should be Fairst. 411. All Good things they say must come to an end. And so it was with the Nuernberg dual meet wrestling Streak last week. After compiling a Dodds record 35-game string and snapping Hei Delberg s record in route to their own Mark the eagles fell to Heidelberg in the Mannheim triangular on saturday 29-21. We paired Heidelberg and Nuernberg right off the Bat Mannheim coach Tom Kalla reported we did it that Way because we wanted All the Wres Tler on both teams to be fresh and ready to go. It was an outstanding match Between two very Fin teams i m a bonafide offensive player reds Parker says he s Worth More Cincinnati a Cincinnati reds slugger Dave Parker says he still in t Paia enough to reflect his stature As one of the National league s More productive hitters Parker 35, a former two Lime league batting Champion and a Veteran of 14 no seasons has led the reds offence Ever since joining the team As a free agent signee in december 1983 from the Pittsburgh pirates. He apparently will be Back in right Field this season for Cincinnati despite some off season talk that the reds might switch him to first base and insert younger outfielder to keep Parker s Bat in the lineup. Parker who has said before hint methinks be a underpaid reportedly suggested that he would be willing to give first base a try if his contract worthsi.2 million annually was renegotiated. The reds Are now eyeing other Candi dates for service at first base including outfielder Tracy Jones 25, and infielder outfielder Nick Esasky. 26."i am a Bona fide offensive player Parker said. Wherever 1 play i will hit. The thing is that no one will convince me that Bob Homer is 1600,000 a year Bel Ter than i am or that Gary Carter is$700,000 or $800.000 a year better. I just won t buy that Homer reportedly made $1.8 million on his last contract with the Atlanta braves while the mels reportedly pay Carter Between si.9 million and s2 Mil lion. Parker has played 322 of 324 games in the past two years with Cincinnati Bat Ling .292 Over that period and producing65 Home runs and 241 Bis. At the same time Carter has batted.269 with 56 homers and 205 Bis. And Homer hit .270 with 54 homers and 176 Bis. Parker has one More year remaining on his current three year contract and the reds have an option on a fourth year. He said he has talked with reds owner Marge Schott and manager Pete Rose about possible salary increases.
