Dear Ann Landers my husband and i attended a wedding that never took place. The Groom showed up at the Church drunk. He paced out at the altar just As the minister started the ceremony. Dear Ann Landers yesterday i was travelling South when suddenly traffic came to a dead Slop. It remained bumper 10 bumper for a mile and a half. Twenty minutes later i discovered it cause of the slowdown an Accident on the northbound Side. Why was southbound traffic stopped Why do people Back up traffic for Miles to look at a wreck i have seen one Accident mine and i would rather Noi see another one. What s the matter with the same i gawking. Please for work in san Jose . Met people s lives Are drab and uneventful. They enjoy the excitement of an Accident it gives them some Ficq to talk about and makes them feel important be Nir they were there. Lawn of course there s morbid in Kwity. It is one of the its attractive qualities of human nature but we Alabam it in varying degrees. I my i St ult. To 11 11. A lilt Mia ill. I Tiiu in is anyway this happens All the time. It s the i thing with fires. Crowds of people stand around policy on cashier corrections clarified once again i left the commissary upset. It is apparently the policy of allow Cashiers to Correct a mistakenly entered Price by figuring the difference in their head and taking the amount o t of the nest item. When i questioned a cashier about this she told me it was Loo much trouble to void the incorrect Price andr Grinj the item. I Don i know if the too much trouble pan is working the registers or explaining to the super visors Why she had to void something. During College i was the head cashier in a grocer store which it so happens used exactly the same Brand and Type of Cash registers. 11 is not difficult to void an item. It was necessary to have a supervisor initial an amount voided Over is and the customer also signed to show thai they understood a correction was being made. 1 personally would rather see the Eta cd amount subtracted and the Correct Price re entered than expect a Busy cashier to subtract in her head twice for on item t also noted that the cashier usually does nol Lake the difference off of another item in the same department. How in the world do the department managers balance at inventory Lime maybe if was a math wizard had an extra set of arms to write out my Check and keep up with my 10 month old son and an extra Eye to make sure my groceries arc being sacked half Way decently this practice might not bother me. This letter is not aimed Al any particular commis sary. I shop at both air Force and army facilities and have seen this happen at All of them. Please Don t remind me to Start Al the store manager level wit this complaint. If had wanted to do this one store at a Lime my husband would have to extend Cathy Reynolds bad Kreuz Nach editor s note _ we received to replies to this Teller. The first is from col. Frank Dooley com Mander air Force commissary service Europe thank Yon for bringing this situation to our Atten Tion. This ii not a coms s policy. Errors Are to be voided. In the newer Cash ree Itten there is an error Cor rect key which will allow checkers to reverse he entry and re enter the Correct Price. However this am Only be done within the transaction f the error is discovered after the next item ii entered then a void action is necessary. Voids of $5 and Over do require supervisor intervention. Cash Register operators Are aware of this policy and Shosid not Csc mental calculations id Correct errors. We have reaffirmed his policy and Hare implement Dan intensive training program for All cashier to pre clude this situation from occurring in the future. Again thank Yon for your letter As a Ottomer feed Back l one of the most effective Means of identifying correcting problems. Tit second reply Tirom col. Neil w. Mont font. Manjor us army top support Agency Europe it is not our Polky to allow Cashiers to Correct mistakenly entered Price As Yon Bare described. All our Cashiers Are trained to void mistakes on the Regis Ter and to have the supervisor in charge approve All voids Over $1.00. Unfortunately Yon have encountered Cashiers who were not following proper procedure. Should Yon experience this situation again please Tell the commis sary officer or the Bead cashier about the problem. They will then be Able to ensure that the practice is ceased. Scanning Roulen optically read the Universal Price codes up on products thus nearly eliminating checker error. Tat system Nill be phased into 11 83 Coundi Varlet Over a period Cathree years and 22 commissaries an schooled to be equipped with scanning by the end of 1987, thank Yon for writing to us and gang a this Opportunity to explain our policies. Writer notes Good ofe boy1 syndrome i be been wailing to Sec an article dealing Wilh being and recently read where a Veteran of 17years military service is being considered for Elimina Tion due to overweight. To his Appeal he Stales he re in misled on three pre Vious occasions and being overweight was not consid ered. This i find True. The individual apparently fell into a Good Ole boy syndrome with his previous chains of command. I have observed this situation everywhere i have been stationed. If die individual is a Good worker the overweight standards arc overlooked and the individual continues to survive until he she encounter a no nonsense Chain of command. When the overweight program came into Al acct my perception was that it made it possible for Good Ole boys to be eliminated after being provided sufficient time to meet standards. However it appears Only those who do not perform Welt at their duties Are considered for elimination. This is a simpler elimination process instead of corrective counselling for sub Standard duty performance. Equal Opportunity is non existent when Superior Sand Good Ole boys Are Given preferential treatment for overweight and those who Are subordinate and sub Standard duly performers Are considered for Elimina Tion. If an individual can pass a it test Why worry about overweight if the response is personal appear Ance the military services have a major problem the program has been in elect for Many years so Why do we still have overweight soldiers my feelings Are the overweight program As it exists today it a farce and should either be Eutimi netted. Or else it should be Given More stringent emphasis to include a Muster weigh in being conducted by personnel outside of the Chain of command.
