June 11,1987 cubs nip error plagued mets by the associated press Chicago Ryne Sand Ere s smash off reliever Roger Mcdowell s foot wit two out in the eighth inning scored two runs tuesday to give the Chicago cubs a 6-5 Victory Over the new York mets in a game marked by five mets errors. With one out in the eighth and the score tied 4-4, Shawon Dunston who had homered earlier beat out an infield single off reliever Randy Myers 0-1. Mcdowell relieved Myers and Pinch hitter Bobby Dernier greeted him with a no Roundup single to left with Dunston stopping at second. Both runners advanced on Gary Matthews ground out to first. Sandberg then hit a smash off Mcdowell s foot and the Ball bounded into Short right As both runners scored. There were five Home runs in the game with All of new York s runs com ing on homers Howard Johnson hit a two run Homer in the second inning and Tim Teufel Hada two run Homer in the seventh. Cookie Wilson homered with two outs in the ninth off reliever Lee Smith who picked up his 15th save. Dunston and Leon Durham hit Solo homers for the cubs who also scored two unearned runs As the mets committed four of their five errors in the fourth inning. I did t think they played that poorly met manager Davey Johnson said about the errors. There were some bad hops in the Field some Tough plays. I Don t think we did the things with theban that we re capable of doing. We did t play Well but we were still in the  right fielder Darryl Strawberry who was benched and fined $250 for arriving late to the Park for the second Straightway was sent up As a Pinch hitter in the ninth with a Man on first and took a third strike to end the game. The cubs look a 1-0 Lead in the first when Sandberg beat out an infield single went to second on an infield out an scored on Rafael Santana s throwing error on Durham s grounder. The mets went ahead in the second inning when Lee Mazzilli walked and scored on Johnson s two run Homer his 10th of the season into the right Field bleachers. Dunston hit his fourth Home run in the fourth and the cubs added another run on errors. Dave Martinez grounded to Keith Hernandez at first who rabble the Ball for one error and threw wide to starting Pitcher Terry Leach for another As Martinez went to second. Martinez advanced to third on an infield out and scored when Sandberg s grounder was booted by Teufel at second. Durham made it 4-2 with his 13th Homer into the right Field bleachers inthe fifth. The mets tied the game in the seventh on Teufer s Homer on starter Greg mad Dux which scored Wilson who had walked. Dickie noles 4-1, was the Winner. Dunne 1-1, struck out four and walked four in Only his second major league Start. The Only run he allowed was unearned in the ninth. Lary Sorensen 3-2, gave up six runs on six hits in one third of an inning after replacing expos starter Floyd Youmans who left in the second inning. Giants 10, reds 2 Cincinnati will Clark drove in four runs with a Homer and a double As san Francisco Defeated Cincinnati. Clark hit a two run Homer in the Sec Ond off Rookie right hander Pat Pacillo no photo Stere Bedrosyan. 8th consecutive save 1-2, and put san Francisco ahead 8-1 in the sixth with a two run double off Rob Murphy. The four Bis matched his single game career High. He is hitting .458 with four homers and 10 Bis in his last 16games. Left hander Mark Davis 4-4, allowed nine hits and fanned four for his first Victory since april 26, snapping a Streak of four consecutive losing starts. He re tired 11 in a Row Over the Middle innings in route to Bis first Complete game Victory since 1983. Phillies 3, curl Nils 2 Philadelphia Steve Bedrosian lied the National league record for saves in consecutive appearances and Glenn Wilson and Juan Samuel homered to Lead Philadelphia past St. Louis. Bedrosian has saves in each of his last eight appearances and 15 for the year. Four other pitchers hold a piece of the record Clay Carroll Bruce Suiter Rich Gossage and Dave Smith. Bedrosian came on in the eighth re placing starter Bruce Ruffin who Al Lowed six hits and two runs and gave up Only one hit in two innings. Vince Coleman reached base for the 39th straight game and stole one base for his 38th career steal against Philadelphia without being caught. Dodgers a braves 3 Atlanta Mike Marshall and John Shelby each hit a two run Homer to Lead los Angeles Over Atlanta. Shelby s fourth Homer came after Steve sax blooded a tie breaking single Over shortstop to score Dave Anderson who had reached on a fielder s Choice in the seventh. Marshall s two run Homer with two outs in the sixth inning bad Given the dodgers a 2-2 tie. Tim Leary la allowed five bit walked four and fanned two in six innings. Alejandro Pena pitched the Las three innings for his first save. Dale Murphy hit his 17th Homer for Atlanta. Astros 1, padres 0 Houston Houston s Danny Dar win and Dave Smith combined for a shutout and Bill Doran s Gro underscored the game s Only run As Houston Defeated san Diego. Darwin 3-4, allowed four hits struck out five and walked five in 7% innings to end a personal three game losing Streak. Dave Smith came on in the eighth an got his Lith save. Alan Ashby and Dickie Thon both singled in the third inning for Houston s Only hits. Billy Hatcher then walked loading the bases and Doran s grounder to shortstop Garry Templeton forced Hatcher at second and scored Ashby. Aba from Page 17 coming out to me Johnson said. The lakers responded with nine consecutive Points taking the Lead 104-103 with 29 seconds left on Abdul Jabbar s Dunk of an Alley top pass from Johnson. It was the lakers first Lead since they led 5-4. If magic does t think i can get it Hewon t throw it Abdul Jabbar who had 11 rebounds said. With the celtics continuing to miss shots and turn the Ball Over the lakers cot their first Chance to go ahead and Johnson made a perfect pass to Abdul Jabbar who made just five of 17 shots from the Field in the game giving Losangeles its 104-103 least the first three games of the series were played without incident but tempers flared for the first time in the series. The first incident came late in the first half. Bird who missed All three of his Field goal attempts and made two free throws in the first half scored 10 of his 12 third Quarter Points in a Span of 4 22, Givin Boston its largest Lead at 75-59 with 6 17 remaining. The celtics still led 79-63 with 4 57 left but the lakers outscored Boston 15 6 in the remainder of the Quarter Mak ing it 85-78. The first Quarter was virtually a Mirror image of the first period in game 3, when the lakers led 29-22 after Boston went eight-for-25 from the Field. On tuesday it was the celtics who led 29-22 behind ainu s 11 Points and los Angeles was 10-for-30 from the Field. The lakers kept the fast Tempo on of sense but usually failed to finish the fast Breaks with baskets. Los Angeles scored six consecutive Points Early in the second Quarter Cut Ting the deficit to 31-28, and Boston s margin ranged from three to seven Point until a jumper by Ainge made it 49-40 with 2 07 left. The lakers and celtics have met nine other times in the finals with the celtics winning the first eight before los an Geles finally prevailed in 1985. The lakers and celtics each have won three titles in this decade with los an Geles winning in 1980, 1982 and 1985 and Boston in 1981, 1984 and 1986. The teams Are meeting for the third Lime inthe finals in the last four years
