European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 11, 1987, Darmstadt, Hesse Review food so Good a sunday drive can t spoil it in these dead Dollar Days Thart s if cheap Cheek tightening Chow at the ii apostles in Aschaffenbur. By sgt ret Clement Lounder going for a sunday drive is something i look Forward to with about the same anticipation u-2 Pilot Gary Powers had for Kamchatka so you can imagine it took almost All of Joleen decal eur sprig s considerable if not necessarily natural charms to get me out on the Road the other weekend. The sunday drive for those readers who Are not familiar with the beast is one of your oldest european Type sports ranking right up there with sweeping the Street and seeing How Many people can fit inside a grocery store on a saturday morning. And it does not take much equipment you get a couple of old people in Felt hats you put them in the front Seal of a very fast car and you get them to drive around at 25 Mph until there at least 647 cars backed up behind them. The old couple gets to pull off somewhere after that to eat and drink and pick up a few postcards then it s Back in their car and Back to agitating a couple Hundred More motorists on the Way Home. And that friends is it the reason i normally avoid a sunday drive like an cafes suit. But like i said Joleen has a convincing Way with old sergeants and there we were piling into the Toad my aging but still sometimes dependable vow six Volt and heading off along the main River in the general direction of Wuerzburg. On this particular sunday in question the lady was dolled up flashier than a new set of Teeth sporting a Low Cut Lime Green sweater and pants that fit tighter than an Earl Shieb paint Job. Her coiffure had been primed and poked and patted for the occasion with the whole works kind of glistened Over with 40 weight Spray. All told an outfit that said i am yours louder than the bakkers say for All my rambling about sunday driving i got to say the actual trip did not last too Long. By the time we had hit Aschaffenbur Joleen herself had tired of the bumper to bumper bumpkins around us and greeted my offer of lunch like it was a Nieman Marcus gift certificate. We ended up at a Little restaurant called the 12 apostles a cozy ill lit place in the Center of Aschaffenbur that offers up yugoslavian and International specialities with the latter being mostly schnitzel and the occasional cordon Bleu. That criticism aside the place produces Cheek tightening Chow at very fair prices with Good service and All things considered of atmosphere. Interior Wise the 12 apostles is nothing miraculous furnished As it is with a Load of carved Wood and hanging hemp lamps potted ferns and White clothed Corner tables and All of that overlooked by a major Wall Type painting of the dozen denizens the place borrows its name from. The menu includes a Long list of Yugo favourites including a powerful number of dishes featuring big piles of grilled meat of various kinds All of them served up with Fries and red Dju vac Rice. There is also the schnitzel plus poultry and fish and a Long list of appetizers ranging from Frog s legs to Spaghetti to egg Rolls and strangely enough Ham and eggs. They also got four or five soups. Joleen whose thin thighs in thirty Days program has lasted for about six months decided on the roast Turkey breast while i fell victim to the House Platter one of the aforementioned mighty Mounds of meat. We both asked for Beers and happily enough landed tall glasses of Henniger and not he lands the rather thin local brew Aschaffenbur Gers dote on. The place had been about half filled when we showed up but a steady crowd trickled in. There was not a table to be had by the time our Chow arrived which was quicker than a tourist can ask for the bathrooms in Serbo croat. Joleen s Turkey turned out to be a treat being a thick slice of breast meat lightly breaded and grilled and the works topped with crispy Fried onions like you can buy in a can except these were fresh. Fried potatoes your red Rice and a salad on the Side and my Friend was one very Happy lady indeed. As expected the apostle Platter proved to be a Gargantuan of Grill featuring More chopped meat than a Bruce Lee feature. There was your Little spiced meat Rolls and your Little spiced meat patties your cutlet and your slab Bacon and your liver plus a pile of Fries a Bunch of Rice and a salad served up right next door. Simple solid Chow and plenty of it. We ended things up with a Little Nach Spe use. I settled for Coffee and a Slipovitz Yugoslavia s not so smooth Plum Brandy Joleen managed to put Down a plate of Palati Chicken the famous bosnian dessert pancakes. They re made to order filled with chocolate sauce and plopped Down next to a slice of fresh pineapple topped with a Quarter pint of whipped Cream. Well Worth the wait. Later stuck in traffic behind a Mercedes 450sl doing exactly 27 Mph Joleen and me had Lime to work out our rating. Generally the place serves Good food at Low prices. Service is Fine although it does get a Little spotty when things gel really Busy. By the time we left the restaurant s single waiter was hopping around quicker than Sammy Davis at a telethon. I got to also add that the 12 apostles would make a great noontime Stop since they offer daily luncheon specials soup a meat course Rice or Fries and a salad for As Little As $3. Ordering off the menu $8 will gel you More food than you Are Likely to want. Die Wolf Apostel is located at number 42 Wiesenburger Strasse in the Center of Aschaffenbur. The place is open seven Days a week and they take american express. Phone 06021-24489 for reservations or info. Joleen and me give the place three pointy fingers. Ratings 8 b 9 b a awesome cab.
