Can you solve this mystery we raised our two children exactly the same Way. My husband and i worked hard to give them the things we did t have. We helped them both financially until our health gave out. One child has always been thoughtful and considerate. When my husband became very ill this child came whenever there was a need and helped me through the most traumatic Days of my life. The other child was too Busy to come and never offered to do a thing. My husband died with a broken heart. We were very Good to our parents and set a Fine example for our children to follow. Ii is awfully sad when a family ends up this Way and i cannot for the life of me understand Why our two children turned out to be so different. Can you explain it hurting in Wilmington Del. Dear hosting. No one can explain Why children from the same parents ire sometimes so different in fact the Way Chil Dren torn of is one of the great mysteries of life. I Bare read so Many letters from parents who knocked themselves out doing everything right and their children Are thoroughly messed of. They were alms la trouble at school and later with the Law. By the same Token i be seen kids who were ignored kicked around and abased. They turned oat to be Well adjusted predict to and were never in trouble of any kind. Mon and More i am coming to Bellere that genetics has a lot to do with it. Where we go in life can depend a lot on where we came from. Dear Ann Landers 1 am the editor of a Small Church newsletter. Some time ago i wrote a poem tilled forget a longtime Friend suggested that i Send it to you for consideration. Will you print it Lucille Obitz Sandy Lake a. Dea Locille with pleasure. Here it is forget it if you Sec a tall fellow ahead of a crowd a Leader of men marching fearless and proud. And you know of a talc whose Mere telling aloud would cause his proud head in anguish be bowed it s a pretty Good plan to forget it. If you know of a Skeleton hidden away in a closet and guarded and kept from the Day in the dark and whose showing whose sudden Dis play would cause grief and sorrow and pain and dismay it s a pretty Good plan to forget it. If you know of a talc that will Darken the Joy of a Man or a woman a girl or a boy that will wipe out a smile or the least bit annoy a fellow or cause any gladness to cloy it s a pretty Good plan to forget it. Us foot doctor discusses dangers of inhalants i read the recent article on the death of Bemie Troy and feel that a few items need to be clarified. First fluorocarbons or freon As they Are commonly called Are not present in All inhalants. They Are pre sent in foghorn super sound and in automobile air conditioning recharge cans which Are used for inhalant abuse. Other propellant gases such As is butane arc abused in inhalation of deodorants hair sprays and other common aerosols. Butane Gas used in cigarette lighters is also abused along with inhalant abuse of non across s to include glues paint paint thinner and gasoline among others. All these substances Are being Abowd by some adolescents and Young adults to get High. All these sub stances can Lead to death As Bernie Troy s death illustrated. Second it was implied that Small doses of these gases can give a High while larger doses can cause death. This implication is totally incorrect death can occur on the first inhalation or any subsequent inhalation. Death can occur the first time a person abuses an inhalant or the Hundred and first time. The gases which Are inhaled induce a High both by lowering the oxygen Content in the blood and hence to the brain and by direct effect on the nerve cells of the brain after absorption into the blood. These two actions of inhalants also can effect the heart s electrical conducting system causing the system to basically Short circuit. Instead of beating normally the Short circuited heart flutters without moving blood and death ensues. The Short circuit or Irr Thmia As it is medically termed can occur at Low doses or High doses of inhalants and nobody knows if or when an arrhythmia May occur. The message i have emphasized to students an parents at the Heidelberg Middle and High schools is simply this inhalants Are not a Safe High they can kill you it does t matter How Little or How much you inhale or How Many times you be used inhalants in the past the risk of death is always present is it Worth the risk of dying just to get High i Hope that once an adolescent is aware of the dangers of inhalants his or her answer will be or. My Thomas Jewell Heidelberg Soldier looks Back at the tet offensive the articles commemorating the 1968 act offensive in Vietnam have brought Back some distinct Mem ories. I was a participant of that Campaign. It was a Campaign that changed the course of the War and the mood of America much to our disadvantage. Just As we look Back on the 20th anniversary of the tet offensive in Vietnam it is nonetheless Well to look Back on the 15th anniversary of the end of our combat involvement in that country. It is especially interesting and significant to look at what immediately preceded the end of our involve ment and what resulted. Much is said concerning tet 1968, but surprisingly Little is Ever mentioned m relation to a Campaign known As linebacker ii. Undoubtedly that Campaign was our finest hour in our longest War. The final months of 1972 were a time of deadlock at the Paris peace conference. The peace talks had drag ged on for four years and had materialized to nothing other than Hanoi s talk and fight strategy. Also the presidential Campaign of George Mcgovern the idol of All the hippies and peace Niks did much to sustain Hanoi s Hopes and ambitions. In an unprecedented show of decisive action b-52 bombers of the Usan strategic air come began heavy bombing of Hanoi Haiphong and other vital Home land areas of North Vietnam. This Campaign beginning in december 1972, was linebacker ii it achieved the quickest results to come about in that War. George mag ovum referred to the intensified bomb ing Campaign As the most Barbaric act by a modern nation since the death of Adolf other cynics and dissidents called it the Christmas bombing however a Good Many veterans such As myself were pleased to visualize it us a Way of saying merry Christmas Hanoi the strategic air come achieved some Quick results that spoke for themselves. As the bombing by b-52s escalated the communists screamed bloody murder. The hippies and peace Niks joined the chorus so did mag ovum and his merry men. Meanwhile Back at the Paris peace conference the behaviour of our opponents changed very quickly. In the Early part of 1973 the last american troops left Vietnam. Also at that time North Vietnam re leased More than 900 american prisoners of War which was All they had so they claimed. It looked As if the Long sought peace with Honor had finally been achieved. However we failed to exploit our advantages gained from linebacker ii. A world renowned guerrilla warfare expert sir Rob Ert Thompson summarized the results of linebacker ii As he said it was All Over. You had even so the United states was looking Only for the quickest Way out of Vietnam and was determined to do so even if it would put North Vietnam in a position to win which was soon to be the Case anyway. As the last american troops withdrew from Viet Nam nearly a Quarter of a million North vietnamese troops remained in South Vietnam where they occupied nearly three fourths of the country. No outcry was raised calling for their removal and no leverage was used gained from linebacker ii at the pans peace conference. In retrospect linebacker ii erased All doubts that the Vietnam War could have been won. Unfortunately there was nothing done in 1972 that could not have been done in 1965. Even so it stands As vindication that Vietnam was a matter of Good soldiers and stupid politicians. Vietnam was forfeited not because it was lost on any Battlefield it was Given away across a conference table. Though i have extensive Pride in my army service in Vietnam i am sorry that 1 was not in the air Force then. I am even More sorry that i was not in the Strate Gic air come. I am especially regretful that i was not on a b-52 Crew during the time of linebacker ii. Hindsight is far better than foresight and if Given it All to do Over again i clearly see where i would be during that time when our finest hour punched through a dismal Over cast. Staff sgt Frank b.
