European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - June 2, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday june 2, 1988 the stars and stripes Page 21 prep Pickin s Osfer fio a put on a first class show there was much scepticism several month Sago when it was announced thai the 1988 Central european track and Field championships would be hosted by osterholz and held at Bremerhaven s nor see station. Travel distances and the resultant costs and the notorious bad Northern Germany weather were the prime objections. Travel expenses were reduced somewhat by using a Piggy Hack system in which several learns travelled together on the same bus. Munich for instance picked up the Ulm and Augsburg competitors. Some problems arose because All the teams Riding the same bus did t have the same billeting arrange ments but those were resolved and no one missed an event. And the Weatherman cooperated almost perfectly last weekend. It May have been a Shade Loo warm especially Friday but the Stormy weather held off both Days until after the Competition had been completed. Osterholz definitely put on a first class show. We were very pleased to have the Opportunity of hosting a Dodds championship event of this stat ure osterholz principal Peter Price said Able to stage such a meet is very Good for the communities of osterholz sch Armbeck and Bromer Haven. We received outstanding support from the military people in the entire area. And you just could t heal the weather. "1 admit i was a Little bit concerned about con ducting such a big event just three weeks before in Send of school but Mike osterholz and and meet director Mike Thompson and the people helping him did a super Job of organizing and conducting the that Thompson and his people had put consider Able work and dedication into the project was Evi Dent As soon As one saw the program for the meet. It is the Best High school track and Field program i have Ever seen. Dodds National High school and world records the top five 1988 Honor Roll performers and the 1987 Champion As Well As the names and schools of All the competitors were listed for each event. The trip to Bremer Haven was by far the longest venture Many of the coaches and competitors have Ever made in Dodds. They Learned what the Oscr Holz performers face routinely each Dodds season. Coming up Here really gave me an appreciation of what the osterholz coaches and athletes must endure not once but Many times during the course of he school year said Munich football track and Field coach Jim Goodwin. We have played Oscr Holz in football twice but each Lime the game has been at our place. We came the greatest distance for this meet. It s a Long Long rip. It was Well Worth it though because the Oscr Holz people ran an excellent meet. Everything was so Well organized. The stadium is Beautiful and of course the weather was Goodwin knows a Well run event when he sees one because Over the years Munich has established for itself a Well earned reputation for staging out standing championships for Dodds. Some exciting things happened inside the stadium those two Days. Mannheim s Jay Wilson became the first Dodds athlete to officially reach 14 feel in the pole vault. He cleared the bar Al that height but when the offi Cial measurement that is required for record settings was held it revealed that he actually had gone one fourth of an Inch higher. The coaches voted Wilson the outstanding Field events performer in the meet for his record setting achievement. The Wiesbaden 1,600-Mctcr relay team and Mannheim s Shelia Merricc Alicr set other Dodds records during the iwo Day championship. Keri hol Tham Teresa Pugh Trina Litany and Stephanie Mcneil turned the 1,600 relay in 4 0169 and Crri weather broke the 300-meter hurdles record for the second Lime in two weeks. She clocked 47-Flat in the aaa regional and then went Down to 45.86 in the finals saturday. Meme Alicr also won the 100-meter hurdles and Long jump and was named the outstanding female runner in the meet. Runaway triumphs by Wiesbaden s Jason Biko in the 800,1,500 and 3,000 meters got him the vote of the coaches for outstanding male running performer. Accents Susan Sargant did t win any lilies but she placed in All three of he events to earn outstanding Field performer recognition for the girls in balloting by inc coaches. The final awards presentation was a Little slow but everything else ran like clockwork. Practically every event started on time the exception being when a protest had been lodged and was being re viewed. One thing that distracted from the Success of the meet was the Complete tack of sportsmanship and appreciation displayed by members of two hot-dog400-Mcler boys relay teams. Both quartets had been disqualified previously and the individuals got into an argument Over which team was inc settled the Issue by staging a race of their own during the presentations. I d like to say it was an Impromptu arrangement but i was lot later that the race had been planned Friday. La was a Well kept secret because the two respective coaches said that they did t know the race was going to be held until they saw the runners on the track. There was some excitement on the gymnastics and soccer fronts As those athletes wound up their 1988 Competition too. Ramstein s Heather Forbes and Heidelberg s Rou Sha Kouril won the senior and Junior division All around lilies respectively in inc optional Competition in the Central european gymnastics championships Al killing in Fulda s Amanda Mauser and a Lernberg s Karcy o Neil prevailed in the class til optional divisions.
