At second base for the american league is Milwaukee s Paul Molitor a solid .300 hitter. But he has not played at second since last season. Vince Coleman of the St. Louis cardinals was chosen As a starting outfielder. Coleman is batting .282 with 45 stolen bases but is he having a better season than teammate Willie Mcgee a .320 hitter who finished fifth in voting How about the starting catchers Gary Carter for the National league and Terry Steinbach for the Ameri can league Carter is batting .245 and has not Hom ered since May 16. Steinbach is hitting just .217 with four homers and has Only 143 at bats. Are they the Best each league has to offer is there a better Way of deciding who should Start other than by a vote of the fans i think there should be a multiple Way of picking the team Chicago White sox manager Jim Fregosi said. It is very important to have the fans involved in picking the team but the players should also have a  Dale Murphy of the Atlanta braves goes along with the idea of letting people besides the fans decide. I d just As soon they did to said Parrish a six time All Star in the american league. I Don t believe they pick the real All stars. They pick their favorite player  Frank Robinson manager of the orioles and a fre quent All Star believes the players would do a better  think the players would put a Little More thought into the selection while the fans make it a pop Lanty  Paul a longtime baseball executive concedes that the fans sometimes fail to choose the Best players but argues that any system is bound to have flaws. You la find Over the years that the fans do pretty Good. They go to favourites but the players do it too. They tried to eliminate the fans voting once and found it was t  but what about someone like Molitor who was listed on the ballot at second base after the Brewers announced in Spring training he would play that position. What can be done to ensure that a player has recent experience at the position he was chosen for Paul suggests that Molitor should not have been eligible. It requires a lot of thought Paul noted. George Brett of the royals was named thursday to the team for the 13th consecutive season. Starting outfielder Dave Winfield of the new York Yankees is on the team for the 12th consecutive year. Two shortstops were picked Cal rip Ken of Baltimore and Ozzie Guillen of Chicago. One of them probably will re place starter Alan Trammell of Detroit who is on the 15-Day disabled list with a broken left Elbow. Infield reserves Are Carney Lansford of Oakland Don Mattingly of new York Johnny Ray of California Harold Reynolds of Seattle Brett Gaetti Guil Len and Ripken. First baseman Mark Mcgwire of Oakland second baseman Paul Molitor of Milwaukee and third baseman Wade Boggs of Boston were the other starters. Laudner is the Only Reserve Catcher behind starter Terry Steinbach of Oak land. Eleven reserves were also selected including Montreal first baseman Andres Galarraga the league s leading hitter at .341, and Atlanta braves outfielder Ger Ald Perry whose .336 average is second Best in the league. The other backup players chosen for the 28-Man roster by cardinals manager Whitey Herzog and no president bar Giamatti were Catcher Lance Parrish of the Philadelphia Phillies infielders Sha won Dunston and Vance Law and outfielder Rafael Palmeiro of the Chicago cubs Chris Sabo and Barry Larkin of the Cincin Nati reds san Francisco second baseman Robby Thompson outfielder Andy Van Slyke of the Pittsburgh pirates and St. Louis outfielder Willie Mcgee. Worrell leads the league with 16 saves followed by Davis with 15. Maddux is 14-3 with a 2.15 earned run average. Hershiser is second to Maddux in wins with 13 and has a 2.46 Era. Gooden is 11-4 and is tied for the league Lead in Complete games with Jack son and Maddux at seven. Knepper is 8 2 with a 2.47 Era while Jackson is 9-4 and Gross 8-4. Sabo Larkin Law Palmeiro Mcgee and Thompson All batting .300 or better Are among the top 10 hitters in the nation Al league. Van Slyke is fourth in runs Bat Ted in with 56. Dunston is batting .290. Parrish is hitting .230 with 12 homers. Players not selected included los an Geles outfielder John Shelby batting .301 outfielder Kirk Gibson also of the dodgers hitting .298 with 15 homers St. Louis outfielder Tom Brunansky a .286 hitter with 13 homers and 49 Bis and astros first baseman Glenn Davis who has 18 homers. The cubs have the most players on the team with six Maddux Dunston Law Palmeiro and outfielder Andre Dawson and second baseman Ryne Sandberg elected by the fans to Start. St. Louis and new York will each Send four players to the All Star game.
