I had one who positively grinned whenever she was included in a family vacation. She usually was. She even made it to the top of notre Dame carried in Paris. She loved to travel. She was never unhappy when seated in the Back of a car. Capt. Ray Mobley commander of the army s 48th medical Del in Heidelberg West Germany said Veteran travellers Aren t unusual among the american dog contingent in Europe. When school vacation time arrives a lot of pooches take to the Road with their families. Such travel can be fun. It also takes some Basic planning said Mobley. Mobley oversees the animal disease prevention and control facility at the Patrick Henry Village military housing area in Heidelberg. This is where three times a week an average of 60 patients dogs cats rabbits fish Birds Guinea pigs Are brought for medical care. It also is where health and rabies certificates Are issued. If you Are planning to Cross Borders with fido or Blackie these certificates Are their passports. Most military communities have Small animal clinics similar to the one in Heidelberg that provide the certificates. They also can be obtained from european veterinarians. Once the passport is in order it s time to get Down to nitty Gritty issues prevention of illness arrangements for food and water and along the Way exercise. It is usually the family dog that goes along on vacation but cats and other Small animals also Are part of the Mobile american overseas Community. In the Heidelberg area Mobley estimates that 75 percent of the families have some sort of pet. As to travelling and crossing Borders with them he said no better advice can be offered than by the american society for the prevention of cruelty to animals. Following Are some Asp tips on pet car travel that Mobley feels Are particularly important. First never leave a pet alone in a parked car. In warm weather says Mobley the heat in a closed Auto can easily reach More than 120 degrees in a matter of minutes. When travelling keep the windows rolled Down several inches or use the air conditioning. If your pet suffers from severe motion sickness ask your veterinarian to prescribe a motion sickness Pill or sedative. Never give Tranquili Zers without your veterinarian s approval. Bring a pet Carrier if travelling with a cat or other Small animal. Let him become accustomed to the Carrier before the Start of the trip. Take along the pet s food and water bowls Blanket and bedding and some familiar toys. They la add a touch of Home. Don t let your pet jump around in the car. He should sit or lie quietly and not annoy the Driver. Don t feed an animal for several hours before a trip. Bring along a canteen of fresh Cool water and Stop frequently to let him drink. Give your pet frequent rest stops. Pick up the waste and dispose of it a trash Container says Mobley. In this Community we have special places to take dogs to relieve themselves and we stress that they should not be allowed to do so where children bring a full litter pan if you re travelling with a cat. Carry the pan and litter inside a plastic garbage bag. While on the Road keep your pet with you not alone inside a camper or trailer or in the Back of a pick up truck. This Way you can easily Tell when he s hungry thirsty hot or tired. Make sure that your pet wears a comfortable Collar with Complete identification his name and yours address and phone number. You la be pleasantly surprised at the reception dogs receive in Europe. They Are not banned from All hotels and restaurants As they generally Are in the United states. Mobley said that unlike their parents the younger generation of germans does not like to see dogs in restaurants and some restaurants Post signs Banning pets. However you will still find Many others that do allow you to bring in a dog. The owners of course will expect your pet to sit quietly under the table. If you plan to take a pet by train bus or ship Check ahead As to their policy on animals. In the United states for example Amtrak has a strict no pet policy. If you Are planning on travelling by plane Contact the airline Well in Advance to Check regulations and services and to make reservations. Mobley said people have had to cancel flights because they failed to get a reservation for a pet. Often too they fail to Start looking for a shipping Container soon enough. Then they Are Apt to discover cafes does not have the size they need and it has to be ordered or rented somewhere else Mobley said. In buying or renting a shipping Container look for one that is Well constructed of reinforced unpainted Wood Wood and Metal or reinforced plastic. It should be equipped with a leak proof Bottom. The door should have a positive lock such As a hasp with a harness snap. The crate should be Large enough so that the animal can stand turn arond easily and lie Down. There also should be Good Cross ventilation. Allow your pet to get accustomed to the shipping Container a few Days before departure so that he will be comfortable in it. Use the crate As a bed or feed the animal in it for several Days before leaving. A bedding of shredded paper a favorite toy and a Small article of clothing with your scent will make the trip More pleasant for your pet. Shipping containers should be marked live attach labels with Staples or Strong glue clearly indicating your name address destination the animal s name and destination and the name and address of the person to whom the animal is being sent. Indicate the Correct position of the shipping Container by using arrows to show the upright position. Note whether your pet is Friendly with strangers. If the flight is to be a Long one place a Supply of dry food in a cloth bag and attach it to the outside of the crate. Include a water dish so that the airline attendants can feed and water the animal without harm. Do not put water in the dish prior to departure because it May spill and Dampen the whole crate. Feed your pet a Light meal at least six hours before departure. Do not give him water within two hours of the flight except in extremely hot weather. Ask in Advance about other cargo on the flight. Fumes from dry ice for instance can be lethal. If possible plan your trip so that your pet does not arrive on a weekend a Holiday or during off hours. Try to schedule the flight so that there Are a minimum of stops and transfers. Arrange evening flights during the hot summer months. Pick him up promptly upon arrival.
