European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - July 13, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Ann Landers Page 11 letter dear Ann Landers i read the letter in your Colum from the teen age girl who was concerned about her Young Friend getting pregnant. You recited a string of cliches and missed the boat completely. When i was 17 i became preg Nant. I am now 41. Had i read your column when i was 17, i would have had no effect what Soever. Why because i was emotionally and physically starve for love and attention. For the first time in my life someone touched me affectionately. During my first 16 years i had two severe illness Sand nearly died. I now believe those illnesses were cries for help. The Only Way i could get my parents attention was to be very sick. I knew that teen age sex was risky but i could t give it up because it kept me emotionally alive. Today i go to Alcoa meetings adult children of alcoholics and dysfunctional families. I Learned Why i have Felt such overwhelming fear pain anger Lone Liness and shame. My father was an alcoholic and physically abusive. My Mother was also verbally and emotionally abusive. I had no one to turn to. We were fed and clothed and went to Church every sunday but i was never allowed to express my emotional needs. Children from healthy families do not have sex at nearly age. They have self esteem. They have no sick need for love of any kind at any Price. The Only thing that would have reached me As teen Ager would have been an answer from you such As if you Are a teen Ager and Are having sex this is symptom of not getting the love and affection you need at Home. Do your parents ridicule you and mis Trust you have you Given up on getting love from them ask your Counselor at school about dysfunctional thank you Ann for your Many years of caring. Hope you will print this letter and open up some eyes and ears. . In Oregon dear . You have written a letter loaded with insight an Good sense. We have known for a Long time that sex is often used As a substitute for love. You have spelled tout for teen agers in a forthright non judgmental Man Ner and i thank you. Dear Ann Landers please Tell those battling scrabble players that there is an official scrabble player s dictionary and it is a lot cheaper than a divorce. A paperback costs about $5. This dictionary contains More than 100,000 two tonight letter words that Are acceptable. The official rules say that if a player uses a word that in t in the diction Ary he loses his turn. There Are several interesting words in the dictionary such As qaid Pindar soph and Faqir. It is essential to know these words when you get stuck with a a with out a a especially late in the game. Some other valuable words Are i Odid Muzsik Xuy and zloty. I have been a tournament player for years. Scrabble is a great Way to meet intelligent and interesting people. Anyone can get a list of local scrabble clubby writing to scrabble players Box 700, Green port . 11944 enclose a Long self addressed stamped envelope. Matt d w Chesterfield to dear Man thank you for helping expand my vocabulary. I no know that i Odid refers to ticks a zloty is polish Money Quintar refers to albanian Money and soph is a letter inthe hebrew alphabet. The things i learn from my read ers class i wine stocking policy discussed i have the problem of not paying attention to poli tics or local issues until they actually affect me. As a result my wife and i were shocked and outraged whence visited our local class i store recently to Purchase some wine for entertaining at Home. They were in the process of taking out the win Section to make Way for american wines. Most of our favorite regions and grapes were already gone and twas difficult to find a few Good bottles. The manager informed us that most of the rest would be going shelves were already almost half filled with Amer ican wines and he said they had to add 85 More. That should leave room for about three bottles of German wine. This is a blatant example of a special interest group taking advantage of the military Market overseas. The ability to Purchase Good German wines in the class i store should be considered a Benefit As these wines Are much cheaper there than on the Economy. This Benefit has now been taken away from us by the Californi Awine growers and the members of Congress. I remember Reading in one of the first article stripes printed on this change that some official sup porting it was quoted As saying something to the effect that California White wines were among the Best in the world and As Good or better than German wines. A that time i got a Good laugh out of it. Now it makes me sad to think that enough people in the legislature be Lieve that to Force this change upon us. My wife and i would take the poorest rheingau riesling Over califor Nia s Best any Day. Anyone we have Ever had occasion to discuss this Issue with has similar tastes. Wine represents a part of the local culture. If you drink wine at All i would think you would want to Sample the local wines while you Are living Here i Germany. One month ago you could find some Excel Lent vintages and years for under $10. If you want to find the same thing now you can pay 30 Marks or More for it on the Economy or More than $40 when you return to the states. I was stationed at fort Ord for 18 months. While we lived there we sampled wines of the Napa Valley. Certainly do not want to drink California wines while living in Germany nor am i interested in supporting the Economy of the state of California. And California is my favorite state. I assume that up to now the class i stores have been run under some simple rules of economics. If a product was in demand and people were buying it. Twas allocated shelf space. If a product was gathering dust it was phased out and something else took it place. That was How we ended up with the wonderful selection of German wines we used to have. Now con Gress has said regardless of what the customers want you must give the shelf space to inferior american wines. Even if you Are a Teet Taler or someone who actually prefers american wines i think you would be upset Over this special interest group infringing on you rights As a consumer. What will be next Steven Cole Darmstadt West Germany editor s note Harold Simpson director Usa eur class i Agency replies we appreciate your interest in the current realignment of our German and United states wine products under Way in Usa eur class i stores As Man dated by Congress. This recent legislation requires equitable treatment . Wines in overseas package stores is. Wines of Host nations. Prior to this congressional action . Wines in Usa eur class i stores were in the minority wit class i wine listings overwhelmingly favouring German and other foreign products. Implementing procedures require that . Wines is. Those of Host nations be maintained at a ratio of 1 to 1 Orless with store displays equally allocated. This Regula tory spread of products will be Complete at the end of this fiscal year. Irrespective of these on going changes there will continue to be an adequate number of Quality German estate wines and other foreign wines available throughout our system. The customer s right to choose the products he she wishes regardless of country of origin has been respected in this legislative process and meeting this balance selection is a priority in the Usa eur class i sys tem. Current customer trends suggest that Fine estate wines of California and other . Wines Are now in demand and that our . Wines have taken proper place alongside the prestigious labels of internationally produced wines. Not Only is an equal listing of . Wines required by Congress but Strong customer demands also support broader distribution of wines produced by our own Industry.
