As members of an air defense radar unit we work with radar every Day. Although the Aegis sys tem is More sophisticated than our system there Are enough similarities for us to know that some of the allegations made by the press Are nothing less than ridiculous. A radar paints an object and then displays it on a screen. The radar cannot determine the size of that object and All aircraft at the same distance Are the same size on the screen regardless of the actual size of that aircraft. Because the image on the screen cannot provide enough information to identify an aircraft an inter National system of modes and codes has been de Vised to provide identification. All military and commercial aircraft arc equipped with transponders which Emit an electronic signal. This signal is received by a transceiver at the radar site. The signal is decoded and the modes and codes Are displayed. All military aircraft squawk modes 1, 2 and 3. Commercial planes squawk Mode 3 Only. It is physically impossible for a regular commercial transponder to squawk Mode 1 or 2. Yet during the Airbus incident the Vincennes received a Mode 2 squawk commonly recognized As an f-14 identifier f-14s Are known As being flown by the hostile iranians who have in the past eight years repeatedly threatened shipping and Mili tary forces in that area. A recent report from a indicates that the Mode 2 squawk May have come from a c-130 on the ground at Bandar Abbas. Again this is physically impossible. The radar projects a Gate around the object in question and Only reads signals within 2-8 degrees and 4-16 Miles of that object. If the Vincennes received a Mode 2 squawk from that area in the sky there Are really Only two possibilities either the Airbus was specially configured to Emit an illegal signal and Why do that unless for some reason the iranians were hoping we d take a shot at the Airliner or there was a military aircraft so close to the Airbus that the Aegis radar was unable to distinguish Between the two.
