European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - August 26, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Ann Landers Page 11 letters dear Ann Landers yesterday at one of the busiest and most dangerous intersection sin town a woman driving a White car sailed through a red dawned on me that my 8 month old child would have Bee killed instantly if the front of her car had slowed into the Side of mine. I pulled out and drove alongside the woman leaning hard on the Horn. Then i rolled Down my window and screamed do you realize that you just r missed killing my child she yelled Back Haven t you Ever gone through a red Light i shouted Back no the woman seemed totally unconcerned and kept going. This is not the first idiot Driver i be encountered who has broken the Law and threatened the lives of innocent people. Please Ann Tell us How to protect ourselves against these fools. Still shaking in Texas dear still shaking drive defensively. Remember that the cemetery is full of Law abiding citizens who had the right of Way. When you get behind the wheel of your car assume that everyone around you is either drunk or on dope and that he or she will do the wrong thing. Then when i happens you will be prepared for it today Drivers talk on the phone daydream and win Dow shop. Some have a hot dog in one hand and a can of pop in the other. Also there s a new Brand of nut out there malcontents who Are mad at the world and run red lights to show their disdain for authority. Crazy you d better believe it. Dear Ann Landers i m responding to the letter signed male chauvinist in Pensacola fla.," who thinks that women should stay at Home have babies and bake bread. I can t believe that the Only thing you could Fin wrong with this Jerk s tirade is his failure to realize that the majority of mothers who work need the says since women entered the work Force when was that when my grandmother widowed with four Small children chopped Cotton in Louisiana when my Stepfather s Mother also widowed took i washing in Texas when my Mother widowed at 26, became a stenographer to support my sister and me women have always been in the work Force but they were never paid a living wage until s no denying As the chauvinist pointed out that substance abuse is a tremendous problem an dirty language is everywhere. But Why blame the Moth ers where Are the fathers men who Aren t willing to share the responsibilities of parenting should keep their pants zipped. My View in Rochester Minn. Dear Roch let s give the men the credit due them. Today Many More husbands Are involved with the laundry marketing and children than their fathers were. Happily the kids Are benefiting from it. Give pm a break. Dear Ann Landers i Don t know How to say this without sounding like a nut. I am ashamed to Tell you that i am jealous of my husband s husband never hugs or kisses me. When i com Plain he says i m not the affectionate Type yet he pets his dog by the hour talks Sweet to her and carries her around like a s a Good husband in lots of ways but this bothers me a lot. Any suggestions Arkansas lady dear lady you la never change him so give up. Get a cat or a dog of your own. Animals Are often better than humans at Loving you Back. Weight reduction programs discussed i read the recent letter regarding the fat loss an exercise flex program. First let me applaud the 34th medical facility for initiating its program. How Ever after checking into the program i have unanswered questions and concerns. I and i believe others working with the army weight control program have been waiting for a Gram such As this. When i read the letter discussing the flex program my first thought was at last there is help for the overweight however upon checking with personnel at the 34th medical facility i was told that the program is Only available to the personnel serviced by that facility. I am sure that this is due to funding , i do not understand Why other medical facilities in Usa eur cannot initiate a similar Gram. It seems that there is a program for every other Type of problem the military member could have writing drug and alcohol child spouse abuse and numerous other social Type problems. A 600-9 and the equivalent apr was written with the entire army in mind and is to be followed by All soldiers. Feel it is an injustice due to their duty assignment. I realize that there Are dieticians at most medical facilities and some units offer a it program for personnel who Are overweight. However an in patient program such As flex seems to be More suitable and would be More beneficial. I Hope the medical command personnel can answer my questions. If there is such a program i am sure All units would appreciate knowing about it. Name withheld Kaiserslautern West Germany editor s note maj. Anita j. Schmidt health promotion consultant 7th medical come replies like you we commend the 34th general Hospital and the Augsburg Community in the development of their flex program. The program was an individual Hospital initiative in response to an identified need with in the Community. Both the Hospital and Community determined that the expertise and resources existed to develop and offer such a program. Even though 34th general Hospital Isth main proponent for the program Many key Community resources Are also used i.e., the Community fit Ness Center local tops club Over eaters Anonymous recreation facilities. Other medical treatment facilities and communities in Usa eur have initiated similar programs based on identified needs and resources. In april Bremerhaven medical activity also started a three week inpatient weight reduction and lifestyle modification program. Last year in the Vicenza Community the medical activity Middac had a one week inpatient personnel improvement program. Recently it evolved into a Community program As a Community health promotion Council initiative. The focus is on weight reduction exercise and lifestyle modification similar to the inpatient program. However this initiative is conducted entirely on an outpatient basis in a partnership Between the Community and the Middac. In addition the program can be easily exported to local units and sub communities and is More accessible to non Active duty individuals. In the 21st support come it plus is an organized outpatient program which assists individuals with phys ical fitness and weight control. Health care profession als from the local medical treatment facility Are involved with portions of the program i.e., health education classes physical examination health risk appraisal. Current plans Are to refine the program and Export it tits supporting units this fall. I foresee that As the army health promotion Gram a 600-63 matures within Usa eur an in creasing number of creative initiatives will evolve in the various communities. I strongly believe that one focus will address weight me emphasize that All of the services and re sources found in these organized inpatient and outpatient weight reduction programs Are available to every one by referral or appointment on an outpatient Are assigned to All 11 of the army s medical treatment facilities in Europe and Are available for nutritional counselling on principles of weight control and a variety of nutrition and health related for an exercise program can be obtained from your unit master fitness Trainer or physical therapist. Information on mental health and stress manage ment As they relate to weight control Are also available from mental health professionals and occupational ther , the inpatient program is but one of several approaches to weight reduction. It should by no Means be considered the first level of intervention. The unit is not excused from its responsibilities As outlined in ar600-9. Commanders must ensure that soldiers who Are overweight receive proper care and guidance in the weight loss program. If a Soldier is motivated yet unsuccessful on this program we agree that an organize Effort geared toward retaining these individuals should be available to commanders. Geographical location should not be a Factor a decision to proceed with the inpatient approach must at this Point be determined by each health care facility. Such factors As the use of existing services an the availability of Beds and other resources Are critical to the establishment and maintenance of the the inpatient approach is new sufficient data is not yet available to determine if soldiers participating in the program can lose unwanted poundage and adjust their lifestyles to maintain an Ideal body weight. The existing initiatives Are Pilot programs which will Gener ate needed information. Our present plan is to provide evaluation for Safe and sound medical principles educational Content and Long term Success rates. Based upon the findings we will make an informed decision on the Best course of closing i wish to emphasize that the key to successful weight loss is an individual responsibility. Formalized programs can be a tremendous help but the final determining Factor will be the motivation and commitment of each person involved. Pen pals i would like to have pen pals.
