I think it is important to thank our Host country when individuals or groups show special help and Friendship to us. During our last tour my husband was made an official special member of a local Tennis club where he used to watch and play occasionally. Those at the club said they were Happy to do this out of German american Friendship. I had Many wonderful experiences on the Economy with the German people and met a wonderful Friend while shopping in one of the local stores upon returning to the area i was Able to get Back in touch with my Friend and talk by phone again. We were discussing the american presence in Germany and How americans Are viewed by the local people. She made the Point that it makes the germans very Happy to see that we As americans try to use their language even if the grammar is incorrect or if our attempt is somewhat feeble. When we were Here for the last tour i made sure that i used Public transportation used German stores As much As possible and tried to treat Germany As Germany and no remain on base where one does t have to leave the american world if one does t want to. I found Many Alder women took me under their wings on the bus speaking German slowly and proudly using any English known when i spoke Ger Man. They would Leach me about the area and i would learn new words and phrases. In the shops the peo ple were Palicot and helpful with my slow but deliberate use of German. The Point is that we need to learn More German if we arc going to enjoy living Here to the very fullest. Classes arc available and we should All take advantage of these opportune tics. When you travel go out on your own and not always in the confines of a pre arranged american tour where it is Safe. You will be surprised How much fun it is to make your own travel plans even if they Are simple at first because it is Only then that you get to know what Germany is really like. Go to the local markets and stores even if you spend hours walking around looking and learning As i did in my first few weeks. The wonderful part of living Here is the Opportunity to icam and experience new things people and cultures. Remember we arc living in Germany and the native Tongue is German. If any of the locals arc kind enough to speak to us in our native Tongue we must regard that As icing on the cake. Don t expect to get along with just English you will miss out. I cannot understand a couple living in country for six years and not knowing enough Ger Man to communicate Wilh a local guard. Get with it americans. Learn some German the people will appreciate it and Are very patient helpful and kind when you make the Effort. You la feel belter As Well. I cannot even speak for the military and their families stationed Here in Norway. I can however say How 1 feel and speak of my observations. My husband like others stationed Here volunteered to Rome. We were forewarned and knew exactly what to expect. Our commissary and Exchange May be itty bitty but we have people like Cindy Exchange and Sheila commissary who always Greet us with a smile and a Friendly word or two. Having a Small commissary and Exchange does t mean we can t adequately feed and dress our families. We could get norwegian clevis on with sky Channel and can but my family elected not  families did the same. That was our Deci Sion our Afes radio station keeps us Well informed and we get stars and stripes. What More do we need yes you Are right. A lot of emphasis is placed on morale. What is not organized by mar is organised by interested and willing people. There in t a season that goes by that there in t something planned for children and adults and you would be surprised How Many people participate. As for the whiners and complainers give them a break. Maybe this is their first time overseas or even their first assignment. Give them Lime to adjust. Pretty soon they will Lake everything As it comes and wonder Why they complained in the first place. I Don l envy anything Yogi have in Germany. We were there for 5 a years and thoroughly enjoyed in. Norway is a new place for us Wilh new experiences and like Germany when we leave Here we will Lake with us lots of fond memories and Cave friends both military and civilian.
