European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - October 15, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse Saturday october 15, 19bb the stars and stripes Page 23 sports letters Csc football a foes t deserve space dear editor my letter pertains to your sports Section and specifically or. Bueky Fox and Continental sport conference football. Typical Csc football games Are As follows Low scoring 10-12 turnovers fumbles and interceptions20-25 penalties and a glowing report by or. Fox concerning the participants. Let s gel serious a High school Junior High or Junior varsity game has fewer mistakes. No matter now glorious Ducky makes Csc football sound the Bottom line is that poor execution and poor coaching Lead to such Large numbers of turnovers and penal ties. Or. Fox tries to Tell his Reading Public that it was great defense that led to All those turnovers and the penalties were called by officials that Don t know the rules. In fact or. Fox went so far As to name an official that made a Call that was questionable at least in or. Fan s eyes. Let s move Bucky and the Csc to the comic pages where it belongs and use the sport pages for some real football from the Stales or give the space to or. Ben Abrams for Scholastic varsity foot Ball which in my opinion is at least two Steps above the Csc. Should you do As i suggest your sports Section will improve at least 100 percent. Or. Fox enjoys quoting statistics from the Csc As he names his offensive Good word and dec Nave players of each week. Such articles remind me of the old adage statistics arc for the come on is get real and lose Bucky and his Csc and sideshows Don t belong on the sports pages. Byron Ferg Munich West Germany drug defense Tell advised dear editor this letter is in response to a recent commentary in the sports Section by Bucky Fox. Or. Fox commented that unless drug users were caught before their athletic event they should be left alone and not to Slid after the event keeping their medal. His attitude throughout the commentary was one of condoning and accepting drug abuse in sports. His knowledge of the effects of drugs drug testing and values toward drug use Are brought into serious question. Only with testing immediately after a event can it be determined whether an athlete used drugs to enhance . Fox seems to think that since offensive line men use drugs in the nil steroid sit s All right in the olympics. His statement that Ben Johnson was humiliated and should be allowed to keep the Goldmedal is completely off base. Johnson shamed him self his country and his supporters by cheating. Now no one will Ever know who is the fastest Man in recent tragedies in Usa eur with to can drug abuse make or. Fox s statements particularly disturbing and outrageous. The stars and stripes has responsibility to provide a positive direction and not editorialize in support of drug abuse. To support or suggest that drug enhanced athletic performances arc acceptable is irresponsible journalism. William a. Can Nan bad Kreuz Nach West Germany stance on drugs an insult dear editor. After Reading the article by Bucky Fox in the sept.30 Issue 1 take it As an insult that the stars and stripes would publish this article promoting the Ille Gal use of drugs. Comparing the illegal use of drugs to a weigh in is beyond belief. Or. Fox evidently feels a person who passes a pc event urine lest should then be allowed to Lake illegal drugs and not be punished. I personally feel a pre and Post urine exam should be done and disqualification be ruled for a failure of either. The rules Are very Clear use drugs and you re out. The military has a productive anti drug program going on and articles of this nature arc insults to the Many americans concerned with the rampant destruction they cause. Nick Luera Heidelberg West Germany Canadian stands by Johnson dear editor i would like to thank Bucky Fox for your commentary that appeared in the sept. 30 Issue of the stars and stripes. As a Canadian i really appreciated your positive Altitude toward Ben Johnson. It is too bad that you were not a member of the olympics committee so that you could have shared your views with the world. I m sure or. Johnson will make the Best of this tragedy and will hopefully return to the track soon. Llull Ann Wrussel Frankfurt West Germany pros ruining olympics dear editor i m writing about something i saw on an. On sept 20. Abc had a segment on Money ath letes and pros in the olympics. Abc has been having polls on questions about the olympics. The first one was should athletes pros have logo through the olympic trials or can the olympic committee waive this if the ath Lilc pro has a bad Day the second one was simply should athletes pros be paid these Aren t exact quotes Only my definition. I believe that if a pro is allowed to participate he should go through the same formal As the unknown athlete. Most pros have been led to believe that every time they perform they receive Money for their performance no matter How Well they perform. I do not feel that All pros fit this category. However the pros who Aren t in this category have an agent who is. Gel the pros out or make them play by the rules and receive recognition appropriately. The agents should be presented with a release form in therase of injury so our olympics Don t go bankrupt because of one and then gel lost those other countries should use that Money for the people of their land. Not so they can bribe their Way to Gold. Yes there arc some who really believe in paying for Gold. On the other hand there Are tenfold More starving worldwide who would love to have a decent meal or better Home to live in i.e., the homeless a medal count is impressive but i feel if you arc going to buy them then go support the . Econ omy buy american then spend the Money for the Cost of the olympics on our hungry and Home less. After All. The Money is donated in t it of yeah the olympics is tax deductible and it s better to gel the tax deduction than to help clothe and shelter Ordinary mammals. What s bad is that the dismal Side of life is reach ing out its ugly hand to our youth again. We have alot for our youth to look Forward to. Now let s see. We have civil unrest pollution drugs greed corruption political uncertainly immorality a sinking Economy and now we want to deny them the possibility of gaining a place in history by going s continue to allow our children to see that they Don l amount to spit unless they can be drafted for the playing Arenas of America. It s Good for youth to think that they can t Advance in life. Just Lake a look at the suicide rate because of disparity in our disillusioned youth. I m a proud father and feel truly sorry for our country s youth. I disagree with the pro proposal needs a lot of soul searching As Well As its professionals in their respective Arenas. In the olym pics America needs Youthful athletes Strong precise and dedicated with the determination to perform Well for themselves. Having the millions of fellow americans cheering them on to Victory will evolve into the Bronze Silver and yes Gold Isaac e. Byril Ascham Tenborg West Germany More to nil than Boz dear Edison what is the difference Between the Boz and Bozo the one with the extra of in his name has the belter looking Hairl i thought it was interesting that Bucky Fox should devote an entire column to Brian the Boz bos Worth. Unless i am mistaken the Boz was not even the defensive Rookie of the year but you still gave him All the Ink. The top Rookie was Buffalo s Shane Conlan but if you pick up any sports Magazine there will undoubtedly be an article on Bosworth. Is there a lesson to be Learned Here for Shane Conlan he obviously needs to be More controversial should he get a Mohawk should he be Given a nickname to draw More attention to himself flow about insane Shane Conlan the barbarian the con Man maybe he should write a Book. This seems to have worked for the Boz. And the Boz has plenty of experiences to write about you remember that the Boz used to work in a pm factory and purposely left screws Loose under dashboards to drive prospective customers crazy. Hey i got to believe that the Boz docs indeed know something about Loose screws so getting Back to Shane Conlan Why is it that the Blue Collar players gel so Little attention the Guy was the Rookie of the year and All the magazines want to do is talk about Bosworth Wake up Shane let s have a Little dirt Are you pro abortion do you Hale Apple pie How about a Rad haircut maybe we could even imprint three "6s" on the Back of your head. That might get Bucky interested in you i Don t deny thai Brian Bosworth is a Talent. I even do like him like they say if you can Back it up it Ain t Braggin. But Bueky Lei s follow it up with articles on others who arc also worthy of Atten Tion. How about those two new million Dollar Bills Conlan and Cornelius Bennett there Aren t 8 million stories in the nil but there arc More than just the Boz seriously Bucky keep up the Good work i was sorry though thai you put the curse on my Bills and picked them to win the acc East. Jack a tote Zarabia a Spain who s an aggie Deu editor As i was readings son aug. 26, i noticed an error in the sports Section in the article on Brian Bosworth s Book Bucky Fox mistakenly inserted a wrong name to help the readers identify a football team. He quoted the Boz As saying i was never warned because we were playing the Oklahoma state a Gies and the aggie gag More in Norman than Rea Gan reaches for grecian anybody who knows anything about College football knows that the name aggie is a nickname for someone who goes to an agricultural College. And Oklahoma stale is not an aim College. Not the state College that has a football team Oklahoma slate goes by the name cowboys As is evident by their Mascot pistol state College that is called the aggie is m Texas. Texas agricultural & mechanical College is the school that is proud to be colled , Kevin Dyer editor s note Oklahoma a4m was called he aggie before the school changed its name to Oklahoma slate swimmers deserve letter dear editor 1 understand Hal each and every person has his opinion of sports. 1 feel that if someone participate Din a season As Long As swim season he or she would feel that they would deserve a letter and it would t be m a swimmer and i also received a varsity letter in my freshman year for swimming. I Wear my letter with Pride for my school and my accomplishments. 1 feel thai we As a team work just As hard As any other team works together. In fact i feel we get More out Ofil we icam responsibility the Wurzburg Waves changed our icam color by Choice to help represent our school. Also we pay for the use of our practice Pool meet Pool buses and just about everything so i feel we Are making the letter and our sport much stronger. 1 guess what i am really trying to say is it is a shame that a sport that is recognized by millions of people ail Over the world in t recognized by some people. Brugette a tar weal Germany similar not Good enough dear editors John Stremple about to fudge on his Promise to Jve varsity status to Fesl swimmers in Dod Digh schools i Hope not. To give them similar in Stead of exact school letters would be to deny them such status the swimmers would gel the message that the school resents them As if they had t got that message already have two practical suggestions to give to or. Stremple. One is that he urge the athletic directors to make Contact with the local Fesl team so that he can provide input to that team s leadership about Dodds standards. The other is that he require the swim letters to Bear the image of a swimming figure. That Given the prejudices of the other athletes would be Emigh to Mark the swimmer As a participant in a minor sport. John Schuh Ramstein a West Germany Gishi
