The depletion of Ozone Over the North pole May be a greater threat than the More extensive weakening of the vital protective layer Over Antarctica say scientist who Are embarking on a two month expedition to study the upper atmosphere Over the Arctic. Ozone in the stratosphere far above the Earth is being destroyed Over both poles especially at the South pole where Hole As Large As the continent of Antarctica emerges in the Ozone layer each Spring. Evidence indicates the Ozone which protects the planet from ultraviolet solar radiation that can cause skin cancer is being destroyed by chemical compounds called chlorofluorocarbons. Stateside the same process is believed to be Tak ing place Over the North pole although the Hole there is much smaller and thu the threat would seem to be less serious. But that Assumption May be wrong said Estelle Condon manager of the air borne Arctic stratospheric expedition. Even a Small reduction in Ozone Over the Arctic could be More serious be cause most of the people reside in the Northern hemisphere Condon said. She said the Ozone problem must be understood because every living thing on the planet has evolved under the protective shield of about 150 scientists will take part inthe project Over the next two months collecting data Over the North pole a they did Over the South pole in 1987. The expedition which will begin nearly january is sponsored by the National aeronautics and space administration and the National oceanic and atmospheric administration. It will use two Nasa aircraft. One of the aircraft is a High Altitude sister ship to the old u-2 spy plane. Called an er-2, the Craft can climb to70,000 feet. That s really on the Edge of space said John Arvesen chief of operations for the er-2. The er-2 carries Only the Pilot who must also conduct the plane will roam Over most of the Arctic but it will always remain within250 Miles of land so it could Glide to a Landing if necessary. In addition a dc-8 will make at least 14 flights along the lower Edge of the strato sphere which begins about 31,500 feet. Instruments have been crammed int nearly every Inch of space aboard the dc-8. About 30 scientists will run the experiments. The experiments will be to determine More about the chemistry and the mechanics that Are allowing Man mad compounds to destroy the Ozone. The Aerial expeditions Are part of larger International program. Elsewhere balloons Laden with instruments will be launched from Barrow Alaska and from various countries around the North pole. . Satellites also will train their instruments on the Arctic. Bogus Check suspect gulps Down the evidence Freeburg 111. Higher drinking Ages effective study says Chicago a states that have raised their drinking age to 21 can expect a significant drop in Drunken driving fatalities among 19 and 20-year-Olds, says a researcher who studied traffic deaths in Tennes see. Raising the drinking age to 21 has a dramatic immediate and lasting effect on the number of Fatali ties of 19 and 20-year-Olds," said or. Michael Decker of Vanderbilt University school of Medicine in Nash Ville in tenn., whose report appeared in the journal of the american medical association. He found the fatality rate in single vehicle night time crashes involving Drivers 19 and 20 years old declined 38 percent in the 28 months after Tennessee raised its drinking age from 19 to 21. In another Jama report two studies found that requiring the use of seat belts significantly reduced in juries and deaths and that Accident victims who Don t Wear the seat belts pay nearly triple the health care Billson those who do. Those studies examined accidents in North Carolina from 1981 to 1983 and Accident victims taken to the trauma units of four Chicago area hospitals. The Tennessee study examined statistics on drive sages 15 to 24 in 1980 through 1986, said Decker an assistant professor of preventive Medicine. There s absolutely no reason to think the results would be substantially different in other states particularly now that there s some uniformity in the state drinking age Laws he said. Motor vehicle accidents cause almost 40 percent of deaths among youths 15 to 24, and Drunken driving is involved about half the time the study said. Drinking Ages varied across the country until con Gress passed a Law in 1984 requiring states to raise the limit to 21 or lose Highway funds. Tennessee s drinking age was 21 until 1971, when h was reduced to 18. The limit was raised to 19 in 1979 and 21 on aug. 1, 1984, although people who were 19 by that Date retained the right to drink As the Law was phased in Over two years. In the 28 months after the age was raised to 21, the single vehicle nighttime fatality rate among 19 and 20-year-Olds was 14.8 per 100 million Miles driven a 38 percent decline from the rate of 23.7 per 100 Mil lion vehicle Miles during the preceding 55 months the study said. It did not give exact numbers. The study showed Little change in the fatality rate among people 21 to 24, whose right to drink was unaffected by the change in the drinking age Decker said. Udu car noted that Tennessee youths could go across me Border to Mississippi Alabama or Georgia where Joo to was not raised to 21 until 1985 orm. But his study found no difference in fatality rates among 19 and 20-year-Olds in comparing the order counties and the rest of the state. Two Wyoming lawmakers have proposed lowering their state s age again to 19. Rep. . Jensen said he Doest think that the higher limit has lowered traffic tonalities in Wyoming
