European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - January 6, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Friday january 1989 the stars and stripes Page 11 we we Pipii ppm a whip a dear readers a while Back one of my favor Ite commentators David Brink Ley signed off his sunday Gram on Abc with a real Gem. If it weren t so outrageous i would be downright funny. Here it is or. Brinkley finally a Bri Flook at How Congress really works. The House of representative voted $750,000 for something called the Taft Institute which sponsors seminars on the american two party system. This is a real waste of Money to begin with. From the House the Bill went to the Senate where Inan election year it was quickly seen As a Christmas tree and they proceeded to hang on it every bad idea that the Senate had been waiting to slip through when nobody was watching. Before anyone noticed the $750,000 escalated to3 66 million an increase of 8,700 percent. When they sent this mess Back to the House to accept the changes one member said if this were not so pitiful it would be a joke. I guess they just can t keep their fingers off the taxpayers the Bill was so bad the House killed it. So Here s a suggestion to the Congress if you want to finance a seminar Why not consider one on How Congress loves to waste the taxpayers Money dear Ann Landers from time to time you have printed letters from battered women. Some of your answers suggest that you believe these women Are Normal people. Often when a woman is battered rules of normalcy no longer apply. She will defend her husband or Lover when a neigh Bor or the police come to her Rescue for a very Good reason. The Man will beat her worse than Ever if does take his Side. He May spend a Little time in jail but he will Beback and knows it. The same applies to the battered woman who leave the Man when is offered the Opportunity. He has probably threatened her life the Chil Dren s lives and the lives of her parents and anyone who is close to her. She also May be so emotionally battered that truly believes deserves the treat ment is getting and that cannot survive without this Man. In spite of All this the Best thing you can do for battered woman is slip her the phone number of the local women s shelter or the Owca. You can also Bethere for her to talk to. She needs to discuss her prob lems with someone who is non judgmental someone can Trust. I know All about this sort of thing because i have been there it l North Bay Calif dear North Bay you Are right when you say a woman who tolerate beatings is not a Normal person. These pathetic victims have such a Low level of self esteem that they must reconsidered dysfunctional. Many were beaten by their fathers and saw their mothers get knocked around As Well. They grew up in violent Homes and accepted brutal Tyas a Way of life. The Only Way to break this Cycle of violence is for Al concerned to get professional help. Wife beaters were almost always beaten by their parents. These men need counselling More than they need punishment if they Are to learn How to handle anger and live in peace. Feiser Brun sum Netherlands Charity does begin at Home says Reader a it i i a i _ first of All i would like to bring to the attention of All military personnel and civilians who read this column a very serious problem. Recently Armenia experienced a major earthquake millions of americans contributed and raised More Money for the armenians than was needed. But when you ask an american to give to the homeless in Chi Cago new York Washington ., and other majorities it s like squeezing blood from a turnip. These people who Are homeless Are americans. Don t you think that giving should Start at Home before going to the armenians who Are not americans. Also it took less than a week to raise Over $5 million for Armenia. What about the poor starving dying children of Sudan Africa it takes at least five years to raise As much Money As you All gave to the Armenia sin less than seven Days. Hey americans what s the Deal i do understand that it was a tragic misfortune but so Are the homeless and the starving and that happens 365 Days a year. If i was a millionaire i would ensure that most of my Money would be used for the homeless and the starving but i m Only one person. Maybe someone might think about what i be said maybe someone with Power because i can t do it alone. By the Way All the Money that s Given away on the game shows can build at least 100 buildings for the homeless and Send some food to the starving. Sgt. Doris j.
