European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - January 6, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 24 the stars and stripes Friday january 6,1989 outdoor adventures a bearing Day in fhe ardennes it s always Good to hear from Wei Brincken s Jake Chamberlain. Whether Hunting stories or occasional newsletters everything i hear from Jack tends to be entertaining and Well a Little unusual. Here s a letter i just received from him. Jake writes dear Mark on this cold blowing Drippin , Muddy and splendid Day in the ardennes i hit a wild boar. Let me Tell you about it. Pull up a Footlocker sit Down. Ten of us from Nebraska to Bavaria had Gath ered at chateau Street in Belgium for a Bat tue drive Hunt arranged through the Hunting consortium by Bob Kern. This was to be my last Chance this season to put a european wild boar on my trophy Wall and dining table. To Honor the boar spirit and the Hunters and soldiers who had died in defense of the ardennes during two world wars i had stopped on the Way at Mart change at the Monument to the Chasseur d ardennes stood facing eastward across the Valley in front of that massive Bronze boar and sounded the end of the Hunt and a la lion my Hunt ing Horn. So it was that i began the morning of the 22nd of december standing on wet leaves atop Slippery Clay leaning against a Beech sapling soul and body at rest. Behind me was a narrow apron of mixed hard Wood before the drop into the Valley. In front of me the logging track was merely a Long smear of Gray mud. Across that was a fringe of Thorn and dead Fern with undisciplined Hardwood to my left front and the dim and narrow alleyways of a Pine Plantation slanting away on my right front. That apron behind me was a no fire zone. Two spotted Deer Gray and ghostly shadows gliding through the Brake drifted in front of me an hour later. I pretended i was a tree and that my double barrelled Rifle was a Branch and they let me Admire them until the fickle wind told them i lied. More shapes materialized an Infinity later. They Mark Swearengen were a family group of boar that allowed me Only flirting glimpses of body sectors among tree trunks before they dissolved Back into the Mist. And then i knew that it was behind me. I looked Over my left shoulder to see the Boss of the Woods glaring at me from 15 feet away. The slant of its body told me that i was Between it and the Pine Alley it wanted to reach. I looked at it in the no fire zone. It looked at me from the no fire zone. We looked at each other. Its expression soured. It charged. I thrust the barrels of my Rifle like an Assegai at the mass of its head. My told me that steel met Bone and the Impact helped my body Sway aside while the boar s head pinched the necessary mini mum away. The boar s body did not flinch away it honoured that newtonian Law governing masses in motion and brushed my leg in passing. As the Impact of boar body on Rifle muzzles pivoted me out of the no fire zone i fired. There was a stroboscopic image of dark body hairs illuminated by red powder Sparks and then we were no longer joined. Since i thought i had wounded it i was now obliged to kill it and still off balance fired the second barrel at the disappearing boar using the natural bulls Eye and identifying it As a female. The shot struck but she carried into the Pines while i shouted in jubilation and Chagrin and re loaded the Winchester. Mark i wish i could say that it was i who found her and fired the coup de Grace but that Honor fell to capt. Chip Collins of he co 501st support in who came face to face with her while scouring those Pines in the rain two hours later. Her live weight was 296 pounds and Chip generously As signed the trophy hide to me. The Point of All this Mark is that surely you know Many people who can say that they have shot at a charging wild boar and hit it. I m Likely one of the few who can say that they hit a charging wild boar and then shot it. Waidman Sheil.
