The Rule has Georgetown coach Joh Thompson so angry he walked off the court at the opening Tipoff of the hoyas game in Landover md., against Bosto College saturday night. The proposal passed by the Mcaa on wednesday says incoming freshmen must have a 2.0 Grade Point average in a specified Caricu Lum plus a minimum score on College Entrance exams to qualify for athletic scholarships. Under proposition 48 instituted three years ago one of the two the 2.0 aver age or the minimum Entrance exam score was Good enough to get a scholarship although the student could not play Mcaa sports As a freshman without meeting both criteria. The new proposal angers some coaches who believe the in trance exams Are racially biased. Instead of considering some of these proposals they plan to punish the Young sters Chancy said. Punish these kids who come from a poor background and have a poor educational Dave Cawood Mcaa assistant executive director said in a statement that Heddin t believe those who voted for the Rule considered it a racial Issue but As Means to strengthen the academic in trance requirements for Cawood said Mcaa members would continue to closely review the subject before next january s convention. Once again the Mcaa has demonstrated that it is without compassion i dealing with human Brown who has three players sitting out this season because of proposition 48, said he backed the Rule when it was instituted but now regards it As a humiliation that follows students through col lege and perhaps longer. Knight said the Rule will open up an other can of you be opened up a path for violations to be committed on that thing he said. They pass one Rule and open up two More problems now the kid can t go to College or he goes anyhow and pays his own Way. Some kids pay their own Way and some kids Don Houston coach Pat Foster predicts More protests. My guess is you la see a More organized protest than with any other Issue Foster said. I think there Are some Power groups in the Mcaa that Are too far removed from athletics to know what s last fall then Mcaa president Wil Ford s. Bailey said of proposition 48 we feel very strongly that unlike a Lotof regulations that we be tinkered with in the past we need to leave this one alone for a few coaches like Carlesimo wonder Why the Mcaa did t. Carlesimo was a proposition 48 proponent until it was changed last week. Now he Calls the rules blatantly stupid that i can t believe it could i just think it s an absolute disgrace Carlesimo said. It s just silly to me to think that a Rule that has helped so Many people could be changed. It s just absolutely opposition to proposal no 42 crossed racial boundaries.
