Naval Force in the persian Gulf is being trimmed again leaving the Fleet with six surface fighting ships the lowest number since the mid 1987 buildup that began As the Iraq Iran War escalated. As the guided missile Cruiser Josephus Daniels and three missile frigates left the Gulf recently three newly arriving vessels entered the waterway to begin three month duty Tours. The three for four Swap reduced the Gulf based Fleet from 15 to 14 ships and pared the number of surface combatants cruisers destroyers and frigates from seven to six. A 10-ship Battle group built around the nuclear powered aircraft Carrier Nimitz remains on station in the arabian sea. It will be replaced by another Carrier group headed by the Carrier Constellation at the end of the month. The defense department said in a statement Friday that the Josephus Daniels was being withdrawn be cause it was no longer required to meet the threat to our forces and shipping in the Region in fact the departure of the Josephus Daniels did not reflect a sudden decision to reduce the Force. The 8,200-ton Cruiser based at Norfolk va., was scheduled to leave the Gulf on Jan. 8, along with three other East coast based ships the frigates Aubrey Fitch Doyle and Taylor. As those four ships left the Gulf their patrol responsibilities were taken Over by the destroyer o Bannon and the frigates Hawes and de Wert All based at Charleston . The frigate Klakring originally slated for deployment along with those three had its orders cancelled in december. With the arrival of the newcomers the mix in the Gulf includes the Hawes the de Wert and another missile Frig ate the Reid As Well As the o Bannon and another destroyer the Harry w. Hill plus the missile Cruiser England. The United states earlier scaled Back its operations in the Gulf from direct escorting of .-flagged tankers to a system of monitoring their movements from a distance. It also has curtailed air patrols and according to the press Secretary predicts americans will be delighted with new first lady Washington a Barbara Bush s press Secretary designate said sat urday she expects the american people to be delighted and surprised by her Boss s handling of her role As first lady. The employee whom the Agency declined to identify wrote in National Noth ing Day a mock Holiday usually included in the january Calendar As a joke said Kath Leen West who supervises the Mcdonald s account for the Agency. She said the employee neglected to Check the Date to make sure a Symbol of racial Progress. No real Holiday occurred then. It was a terrible terrible oversight West said. It was an innocent  that is not How it came across to Many of the City s Black residents for whom King is this is where they killed him and now they do this said Pinkie Donerson a sales clerk eating breakfast at a Mcdonald s near downtown.
