Wrestlers from the Germany Bennor schools grab the spotlight this week As they go about qualify ing for next week s Central european tournament at Heidelberg in regional at Wiesbaden Vilseck Hanau and Ramstein. Leading the Parade of talented athletes is Wiir Burg s . Werner who has posted another perfect Campaign after winning the 112 title and both the outstanding wrestler and most pins in the shortest time awards in the 1988 be meet at Ramstein. Werner is wrestling 119 this year and will be competing in the Southern regional at Vilseck where Stuttgart and Niernberg rate As the strongest team title contenders. Stuttgart has Overall team strength while Niernberg has four exceptionally Strong wrestlers in 140-Pound Tony la none 160-Pound David Slivka 171-Pound Jim Philpot and heavyweight Greg Mccartney. Among the other outstanding competitors seeking championships at Vilseck Are Jericho Valle 103 and Pat Altenburg 152 of Ansbach Stutt Gart s Ryan Russell at 112 and Vilseck s Shawn hop Kins 189. Host Wiesbaden looms As the Northern regional favorite because it has a Good wrestler at every Posi Tion. Berlin has two Brothers Clarence and Tony Alston who figure As probable individual champions Clarence at 145 and Tony at 171. They transferred in from Kentucky and have been  topped this year. Brussels Kevin Adams 135 and shape s Sean Miller 152 Are other outstanding prospects at Wiesbaden. The Lions should Roar in the Central regional at Hanau. Heidelberg which is gunning for its fourth straight Central european title and its sixth straight regional Crown and defending Small schools Cham Pion accent head the cast. Jason Savage who was 119-Pound runner up last year and 103-Pound Champion in 1987, leads the Heidelberg grapplers into the Competition. He s 14-0 at 125 pounds this year. Other top Heidelberg mat men include Brad Hogan 160 and Ethan toppings a 14-year-old, 189-Pound Sophomore who also sports a 14-0 record. Accent s Joe Abraham 119 and Harry Rollins 130 and Baum older s Duwan leak 160 also Are highly rated. Barring unforeseen upsets the Hogan leak title Battle should be one of the Blue plate matches at Hanau. Ramstein looms As the favorite to win the West Ern regional it is staging. Hard fought Battles Are anticipated Between the royals David Lockyer and Patch s Andy Scheiderich at 112 and Ramstein s Eric Kempf and Kaiserslautern s Steve Mckendree at 135. Other top competitors seeking titles at Ramstein include Kaiserslautern s Gary Coleman 103ramstein s Ari Davatelis 125patch s Derek Padden 140 and Bonn s John Scott 189. Dodds Germany sports coordinator Tom Leblanc said tuesday that some of the coaches have been lax about submitting weight certification forms to the directors of their respective regional. Leblanc advises the coaches to hand carry the forms to the meet to avoid having any of their boys disqualified. The top four competitors in each weight bracket in each regional Advance to the Central europeans. No other teams clinched championships although Aviano finished its regular season with a 10-0 record and 27 straight victories during a 45-4 spree Over the last three campaigns. However there will be some championships decided this weekend As the Germany a teams and Bennor finish regular season strife to set the stage for next week s regional tournaments. The Munich girls can Clinch their third straight a South title and their ninth in the 80s eight out right and one shared with Ansbach in 1980 when they beat the cougars twice the final weekend by beating Ansbach once this weekend. How Ever the charges of Rich Bennett will need help in the form of a Frankfurt Victory Over Wiesbaden Fri Day to do so. A double win gives the Lions a share of the Crown no matter what. Another Blue plate girls series matches Baumholzer against Giessen at Giessen. Both teams Are 8-0 in a Central league play. A sweep determines a Cham Pion a split leaves things status quo. Berlin holds a one game Edge Over osterholz in the boys division of the a Central. The bears have a Tough set at Karlsruhe while osterholz is at Home to not so Strong Fulda. Accent and Brussels split their season opening weekend Bennor girls series and have swept every one else aside. Chances Are they will finish in a title standoff. The Lions wind up at Oesterberg while Brussels invades Bonn. Player of the week accolades go to Heidel Berg s Kirsten Keller and Wiesbaden s Rob Harris. Keller chalked up 21 Points and 15 rebounds against Hanau Friday but she saved her real heroics for saturday. With two key performers Karen Dan Dridge and Cindy cabe sidelined and the undefeated Lions losing to Stuttgart Keller took com Mand. All she did was score 13 of Heidelberg s 15 last Quarter Points including the game winning free throw in a 37-36 Victory grab four key rebounds in that final period and go on to a 24-Point, 15-Board game As Heidelberg ran its aaa record to 10-0. Harris the leading scorer in Dodds with a 28.2 average had 41 Points and 21 rebounds 14 off the defensive boards and four blocked shots against Kaiserslautern Friday and 20 Points and 14 re Bounds against Wiir Burg saturday. Stateside members of the Albert Schweit Zer basketball tournament have been selected and sex Fulda luminary 6-11 a Shaquille o Neal is not one of them. Here Are the stateside players committed to the Schweitzer tourney Mason who has signed with Urcla Webster headed to Oklahoma Faulkner who will attend St. Johns Allen Houston 6-5, who will play for his Hometown Louisville cardinals Thomas Hill 6-3, a texan headed for Duke Shawn Golden 6-3, of Greenville s.c., bound for Georgia Conrad Mccray 6-8, of Brooklyn going to Syracuse and Deon Thomas 6-7, of Chicago signed with de Paul. Two other players 5-9 Paul Johnson of new Orleans and 6-5 Calvin Byrd of Alameda calif., Are unsigned. Dodds seniors born on or after Jan. 1, 1971, Are eligible to try out for two open spots on the . Albert Schweitzer team at Benjamin Franklin sports Arena March 18 at 1 . All local candidates should submit their applications through Leblanc s office. Leblanc also wants to remind All varsity players who were born in 1972, 1973 and 1974, who Are interested in playing in the International cadets basketball tournament at Cholet France March 25-27, that they must submit their paperwork to him no later than next thursday feb. 16. Tryouts for that team Are scheduled March 3-5 at Heidelberg High school. To Date Only 10 players have submitted applications Leblanc informs. The stars and stripes Flores confirms he s discussing Seattle pm Post Seattle a former los an Geles raiders coach Tom Flores has con firmed he s interested in becoming Gen eral manager of the Seattle sea Hawks and is discussing the position with team owner Ken Behring. Flores 51, coached the raiders to two super bowl titles in 11 years before re signing after the 1987 nil season. Right now i can Only say i be talked to Ken Behring and i am talking to Ken Behring and there s a Strong possibility we re going to talk again Flores told the Seattle Post intelligencer.
