Flaws keep sweetheart s dance from Success by Chuck Vinch staff writer i wanted to like sweetheart s dance a Story of two Middle age couples and their search for happiness mainly because it showcases four of my favorite thespians Don Johnson Susan Sarandon Jeff Daniels and Elizabeth Perkins. But there Are two major flaws both involving Johnson and together they were enough to torpedo this film. The first flaw is there is something to the concept of typecasting. After watching Johnson for quite a few years busting cok Heads in seamy Back alleys As Sonny Crockett of to s Miami vice it s just too jarring to see him As a romantic Lead. And it s a crying shame because he does a decent Job. The Guy is a surprisingly versatile actor. The second is the material Johnson is Given to work with. He plays Wiley Boon a construction Foreman. Sarandon is his wife Sandy. Wiley s Best Friend is Sam manners Daniels so great As Melanie Griffith s toy in wild Thingan eligible Bachelor about town who is the principal at the local school. Wiley and Sandy have problems. Or rather Wiley has problems. He seems helpless to keep himself from sinking into one of those increasingly common Middle age crises you hear about these Days. He just can t connect with Sandy any More emotionally physically or in any other Way. When Sam meets elementary school teacher Adie Nims Perkins fresh from her Success in big and doing a nicely understated Job Here and finds himself falling in love for the first time it Only makes Wiley crazier. Sam and Adie Are coming together at roughly the same High speeds that Wiley and Sandy Are coming apart. We Don t kiss much anymore Wiley tells Sandy. I know Sandy replies. He keeps trying to goad Sandy into throwing him out so he won t have to feel guilty about acting on his impulses to fool around with other women. The Story is told in a sort of Vignette style with subtitles for each scene such As the first i Mil veterans Day the season to be Jolly and the new year. To be sure there Are funny moments in fact there Are a couple of out and out yuks and some great lines. Particularly endearing is a scene where Sam Wiley and Wiley s son go camping and engage in some humorous male bonding Type behaviour. But despite its pluses my big problem with sweetheart s dance is that i be just had it with movies that feature some Middle age Guy who seemingly has it All yet is forever moaning about How unhappy he is. Enough already. Wiley Boon has a solid business Nice kids and Susan Sarandon for a wife for crying out loud i Don t know about you but i think i d be Content with that situation.
