Hopefully everything will work scientists excited about drug that helps body kill aids virus by the Washington Post Washington signalling a major Advance to Ward an effective aids treatment scientists say they have designed a drug that attacks aids by enabling the immune system to find the virus and destroy it. We Are now in an Era where As a practical matter not science fiction you can design and stitch together antibody molecules said Samuel Broder director of the National cancer Institute and one of the authors of a report published in thursday s Issue of the journal nature. This is a technological leap. Whether it has clinical value is something we will have to the drug is essentially an artificial antibody Accord ing to the report. One reason the disease has proved so uniformly lethal is that natural antibodies that Are sup posed to defend against infections mysteriously fail to Stop the aids virus. Once these artificial antibodies Are unleashed however other parts of the immune system then destroy the virus. Aids researchers called the artificial antibody potentially one of the most promising advances yet in the Battle against aids. They said if further studies in animals to be completed this year and then in humans support Early observations the drug could prove far Superior to at the Only drug currently approve for treating aids. The artificial antibody developed by researchers at Sci Harvard medical school and Gene tech inc., South san Francisco bi9technology firm is an enhanced version of a genetically engineered protein that they and several competing groups have been producing during the past two years. The development of the artificial antibody reflects the growing sophistication of the Field of rational drug design. In the past drugs were developed almost randomly and tested to see if they would work on specific diseases. Sophisticated protein design has permitted aids researchers to begin producing drugs that Are targeted to specific parts of the aids virus. I m very excited about what they have done said Charles s. Craik assistant professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of California at san fran Cisco.
