Green Kaiserslautern Bureau Pitburg a West Germany the 6-foot-plus, Crew Cut fitness fanatic had been making sure things were just right at Pitburg s Mike Mark memorial Field House Long before being named the Best athletic director in the air Force for 1988. I could not live with being average George Price said. I just want to be Best and i feel very very strongly about Price has been at Pitburg for 29 years serving the last nine As athletic director. His crowning achieve ment was having a direct hand in the $1.5 million renovation of the base Field House in 1985. The outward appearance of the building belies the atmosphere and furnishings inside. Wood panelled Walls lined with recessed display cases and potted plants give the facility a look comparable to any health spa or fitness Center in the United states. There s no doubt in my mind that we be got the Best sports facility anywhere in the air Force Price said. Besides the customary basketball volleyball court racquetball courts saunas and weight rooms the Field House boasts a fitness Center Complete with 25 Nautilus exercise machines two computerized exercise cycles treadmills Stair climbers mirrored Walls an membership fee. That s right a $4 membership fee. You Don t have a membership fee when you re average Price said. You give people what they want nobody cares about dropping $4. the fee pays part of the Cost of a full time recreational aide to help members tailor an exercise program to their specific needs. It also helps pay the maintenance Bill for $ 135,000 Worth of equipment. High profile projects such As the Field House renova Tion helped the base win an installation excellence award and undoubtedly played a part in Price s being selected athletic director of the year. But it s the Atten Tion to detail that Price feels is his bread and butter with the Pitburg faithful. It takes us an hour to open up this facility Ever morning he said. During that hour every commode and urinal is flushed and new soap is put out every Day. There s nothing More important than having a Nice bar of soap without hair on the facility is open for business 18 hours a Day 365 Days a year. Ruth j. Lawrence of Oxford eng land is manipulating some of the most Complex concepts in mathematics. Her work has taken her to the outer fringes of theoretical physics and mathematics such subjects As knot and string theory and the connections Between the world of particle physics and mathematics.
