That sounded a bit farfetched until Spencer explained that he had started his racing Ca reer at age 6 on a 50cc mini Trail Honda. It was a yellow and Silver Honda Spencer said recalling it All with pleasure and i raced against other Little kids my age although most of them were older seven eight or nine. We raced on dirt in what they called to scrambles. Similar to Moto Cross. And now i ride for the Honda factory so i guess you could say that my entire career has Bee with and that was the Case until now. During his years with Honda Spencer won three world championships his first in 1983 on a Soock Honda and then a double world championship in1985 on Soock and 250cc hondas. He is the Only rider to capture both crowns in a single season. But after that 1985 Peak Spencer faltered. He was plagued by one injury after another and he finally announced his retirement from the sport in March oblast year. Then in a Surprise move last november Spencer announced his plans for a comeback. But for the first time in his career from age 6 Onward Honda was not in his plans. He said he was signing on with Giacomo Agostini s Marlboro Yamaha team this opening made possible when three time world Cham Pion Eddie Lawson of Upland calif., left Yamaha to join Honda. So much for the background. In a Marlboro Yamaha telex that arrived Here late Las week the feature news was on Spencer and his first test session with Yamaha. It was Spencer s first Timeon a grand prix racing Cycle in nearly a year and he apparently was quite impressive on it. The four Day test session tp9k place on the australian grand prix circuit at Philip Island and it provided the first Opportunity for Spencer his teammate Niall Macken Zie of Scotland and the 250cc rider Luca Candalora of Italy to try out the 1989 Yamaha factory cycles. It s a smooth Bike Spencer said and he com pared it 19 one of his favorite machines the Cycle he used to win his first title in 1983. It is similar to the3-Cylmder Honda. That is the easiest thing for me to compare it with. This Yamaha is a great racing e Mackenzie also a convert from Honda who finished sixth in last year s world championship Man aged to put in the most laps 247 and he also put in the fastest Lap time at one minute 37.31 seconds. Spencer was Only fractionally off the Pace at1 37.51, not bad certainly after a year s Layoff Randy Barnett Spencer Doohan the Shreveport native said he had no fitness prob lems during the four Days of High Speed Riding add ing i feel better than i Ever have. There Are always afew aching Muscles when you get on a Bike for the first time after the off season and i know what have to work on before the season at the Honda Camp meanwhile rothmans Honda announced that the Young australian new Comer Michael Doohan has joined his countryman Wayne Gardner and world Champion Lawson to form a three Man team for the Soock world championship Campaign. More testing is planned before the championship season opens and Doohan will make his grand Pix debut at Suzuka on March 26 in the Japa Nese opener. The fact that Gardner and Lawson Are on the same team this year makes things interesting in deed. Gardner world Champion in 1987, lost out to Lawson last season and said recently that i found it hard to accept defeat but i Learned a lot about losing and i Tomk it s taught me to be a much stronger person in difficult circumstances. I m really looking Forward to the Challenge of having Eddie Lawson Riding Honda machinery this season and it will be interesting to see How he goes. I m going All out this year to win my title Lawson meanwhile whose three world titles no equal those of american riders Kenny Roberts and Spencer says he Aims to beat Gardner and become the most successful american rider of All by winning world championship number four for his new team. Generally speaking it should be a Superb year inthe Soock world championship class. Americans Are Well represented Kevin Schwantz and Wayne Rai Ney along with Lawson and Spencer and there is no lacking in Competition. The 250cc class will be hard fought too. Eleven of the 15 grand Pix races will be run in Europe this year so if you re a motor Cycle fan you re really in business. It s great stuff always close always thrilling and always dangerous.
