   European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 04, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse                                Thursday May 4. 1989 the stars and stripes Page 21 Bim bbb a Bil i i people in Salisbury still love Media five years ago when i first went to the National sportscasters and sportswriters association Silver anniversary awards banquet i reported peo ple in Salisbury n.c., just love us Media  last week on the occasion of the Ossa s 30th anniversary i once again was on hand and it s still True people in Salisbury n.c., just love us Media Folk. Every year since 1960, the fantastic people of Salisbury have honoured the outstanding sportscaster and sportswriter from every state and the top nation Al sportscaster and sportswriter at a three Day awards program. And every year at least one of us is in ducted into the Ossa Hall of Fame. Members of the association vote on All three categories. The Ossa also is the official voting group for the United states olympic Hall of Fame. Prep Pickin s never has been a state Winner but As a charter member of the association and now a member of the Board of directors i make an Effort to get to Salisbury every Spring for the ceremonies. The 30th anniversary was every bit As gala As the 25th. The red carpet was rolled out All the Way. There were receptions in private Homes clinics and tournaments in Golf and Tennis seminars Buffet breakfasts and luncheons with special guest speakers and the formal presentation program which was Fol Lowed by a spectacular reception. Sixty two of the state winners made it to Salisbury this year. So did sportscaster of the year Bob Costas of Abc and sportswriter of the year Frank Deford of sports illustrated. Also on hand were hop inductees Ernie Harwell the voice of the Detroit tigers and Furman Bishr sports editor of the Atlanta journal As Well As other Hall of Farmers will Grimsley and Lindsey Nelson. Honoured for the third time Costas went to great trouble to get Back for the april 24th awards ceremony. He was Busy taping shows on the West coast. So he flew into Salisbury monday afternoon accepted his award that evening and then caught an Early tuesday coming flight Back to the coast. Costas could make it Back for the fourth time next year but Deford s wins Stop at six at least temporarily because he recently resigned from sports illustrated. The tigers played that monday night but Harwell came to Salisbury missing his broadcast for Only the second time in 20 years. Both Grimsley and Nelson Are retired now Al though Grimsley still occasionally takes a special assignment for the associated press. But it s great to Chat with those people greater to listen to them. Grimsley covered All sports All Over the world and he has a repertoire of stories about the elite and not so Clite sports personalities that is very interesting one of his favourites involving Bill Stern covering Golf not one of his stronger sports. Stern praised a golfer for driving the Ball 150 Yards. Told that 150 Yards was t so Good. Stern merely and ribbed the Ball went 150 Yards on the Fly and rolled another125." Nelson who used to be the voice of the new York acts among other things docs a rendition imitating sex mets manager Casey Stengel trying to make out a starting lineup that is fabulous. And even though he s not too Active any More there s nothing subdued about Lindsey Nelson s sartorial splendor you should have seen a couple of his sports jackets. Salisbury s love affair with the Media came about because Pete Dimizio was an ardent sports fan who owned a restaurant that was frequented by Carolina Media people As they made their Way through the City to and from assignments. He wanted to do something for the people who spoke and wrote about the people who performed the exciting things that were happening in sports. He began by recognizing the outstanding Carolina Media personalities. Pete Dimizio died before he could realize his dream of establishing a National recognition pro Gram. However his widow and his Many friends including the sportscasters and sportswriters of the Caroli Nas banded together and persuaded the Salisbury chamber of Commerce to establish such a program. It has become a Salisbury tradition. Anyone who has Ever made it to Salisbury can t wait to go Back. That month in no Dodds Spring sports championships Trail starts winding this weekend when Spain brings its Ultrashort season to a conclusion with the track and Field meet at Torr Jon and Tennis and soccer tournaments at Rota. The eliminations continue next week in Italy and Turkey May 19-20 in the u.k., and the sports com petition terminates with the staging of the Central european track and Field and gymnastics championships May 26-27. After that Only the naming of the 1988-89 stars and stripes athletes of the year will remain before summer vacation strikes. The annual Dodds Ger Nany Spring Golf clinic has been scheduled at the kit Zingen Golf club at Lawson Barracks monday May 22. The clinic will be conducted by kit Zingen pro fran a Zilowski a class a pea professional from san Antonio Texas. Harry Bannerman former scottish open Champion and world cup player is the special guest instructor. The clinic is open to All Dodds Ger Nany golfers and Golf coaches. Any school that has t had a Golf team but might be anticipating having one this fall is invited to Send representatives to the clinic Loo. Soccer fun a european soccer Camp for american boys and girls Between the Ages of 10 and 18, will be conducted aug. 6-12 and 13-19 at the sport Schulz in Weinheim. The Camp is conducted by Herman Zimmerman and his three sons Peter Bernard and Roger who want american kids to have a first class exposure to the sport and have fun while doing  the Zimmerman boys arc americans who grew up in Germany and Learned and developed their soccer skills at the Karlsruhe sport Schulz. All three attended the University of new Haven on soccer scholarships. Cook fired six straight deuces 211 220-214 for a 645 first set and 226-223 233 for a 682 second set for a 1327 total and a 221 average. Damian Estevcz was second with a 698-5951293. His 698 is the new High series for the tournament and it included games of 246-258 and the 194 which com him the 700 series. The 698 sur passed Nealis 691. Steve Bair of Neu Ulm took Over second place in the All events stand Ings on the heels of the 611-604 1215 he rolled in doubles tuesday night. That plus the 570-6571227 Bair fired in team Competition gives him 2442 pins Overall. That s 35 pins behind Nealis 2477, which includes a red hot 691-686 1377 Doub is on the tuesday afternoon shift. Bair and Don Johnson of Sembach were the Only tuesday night bowlers to crack the All events top ten. Eric Abc bowl Irr Boucher of Ramstein 1117 in team 1311 in doubles 2428 total fell to third. The Ken Brooks Steve Cook combo out of Stuttgart is still in third place at 2375. Four pins behind Brooks Cook is the Rheinland Pfalz pair of buddy still and Cecil Ellis. Right now 135 bowlers Are looking at a 31st place cutoff of 2255. The cutoff is at 31 because defending Champion Fred Walton automatically qualifies. Green who crawled with heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson on a new York Street Corner last summer told Hospital authorities that he had been stabbed at4 15 . Monday at East 125th Street and second Avenue in Manhattan Hospital officials who called the Cit police reported that Green was stabbed by a person unknown to him for an unknown reason who then fled said police spokesman detective James Cole Man. The Hospital told police that the 28 year old Boxer walked into the emergency room of the Hospital Early tuesday and was admitted for observation said Hospital spokesman Phil Putric. Green s Stab wound was not consid ered serious Petrie said. The stabbing is the latest in a Long line of troubles for Green who has been arrested four times since last August on charges that include assault robbery and Drunken driving. Green also has had his Driver s License revoked Many times. Besides their Street Corner Brawl Tyson and Green fought once in the ring with Tyson winning a 10-round decision May 20,1986
