European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 25, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 Ann Landers dear Ann Landers i know you have enough to do without trying to interpret dreams for your readers but i Hope you will take a Stab at this. It seemed so real to me that i awakened with a Start and sat Bolt upright in bed. 1 dreamed that i was walking Down Wilshire Boulevard one evening Stark naked and decided to Stop in a fashionable restau rant for dinner. Although i was aware that iwas completely nude no one else seemed to take no Tice. The restaurant was Busy and there were a few people ahead of me waiting to be seated. When the hostess saw me she smiled and said i m sorry but we Don t allow gentlemen Here without neck tics. Would you mind borrowing one of ours i said not at All and put on the tic she handed me. Then she added with a smile this color goes with i was extremely self conscious but no one else in the place seemed the least bit concerned that i was sitting there naked As a Jaybird. I know All dreams have a hidden message and if 1 could interpret this one it would help me with the problems 1 am having with my sweetheart. Please come to the Rescue. A nonny mouse in Century City dear nonny interpreting dreams in t exactly my Strong suit but if you will Settle for an Amateur Effort Here it is you Are insecure in your relationship with your Sweet heart and feel vulnerable naked because you believe she sees All your weaknesses. I have a Hunch that you Are probably a nifty Guy and worrying needlessly so Why Don t you put your clothes Back on and lighten up on yourself if there Are any psychoanalysts out there who would like to offer a professional analysis for free of course d love to hear from you. Dear Ann Landers you blew it Honey. Disgusted Driver in and also fed up in upstate May not like it but we do have a Law that deals with offensive speech. It is called the first amendment. I m sure your expert consultants at the country s top Law schools will agree that there is a big difference Between passing a Law prohibiting the display of obscene bumper stickers and enforcing it. Ask them about Cohen is. California 403 . 15 1971better known among lawyers As the Bleep the draft Case. In this particular Case the offensive language appeared on the Back of the Man s jacket not on a bumper sticker but the principle remains the same. According to the court s opinion you were right the first time Annie. The judge held As follows those in the los Angeles courthouse could effectively avoid further bombardment of their sensibilities by simply averting their eyes and not look at the Offen Sive this is Why our forefathers wrote the first Amend ment. . Lawyer dear . Law what you have written is Correct. But if you will go Back and reread that column you will find that in Florida there is a Law prohibiting obscene bumper stickers. So maybe you should take up your beef with the legislative body of that state los Angeles times syndicated columnist Landers welcomes your letters. You can Wila to her in care of the stars and stripes. Apo 09211, . Forces teachers opinions ignored writer says i believe that teachers do know some of the answers to the Complex problem of the ailing educational sys tem in the United Stales. Unfortunately they arc Seldom asked and their professional opinions weigh very Little in the general Deci Sion making. Obviously the preoccupation with the time on task movement and the All exclusive dedication of increasing test scores on mostly isolated skills did nothing to improve the Quality of education. On the contrary it seems the picture is More dismal than Ever. Wis Dom based on past experiences suggests that the re forms will consist of More of the same that did not work in the past either. Complex problems need Complex and Many faceted solutions and this is not the place to discuss and Eval uate these. However 1 would like to Point loan often repealed statement that is gradually acquiring the qualities of a Dogma. An official recently stated As so Many before him in the solution is nol a matter of later the article quotes figures to further substantiate the statement. It shows a general Lack of Prog Ress despite. Ever rising educational spending up to $3,977 per student on this year s Chart compared to $3,756 last counting 182 school Days thai amounts to a grand truly generous increase of $1.21 per Day per student. This amount cannot impress anyone who knows that school oriented paperbacks Are costing Between $10 and $20. We arc living in an expensive world. Furthermore $3,977 divided by 182 school Days comes Oul to $21.85 per Day per child. Can we picture any other inst Lulion being run on Hal much can we imagine a Hospital charging $21.85 per patient per Day excluding the fee of the attending physician lab anaesthesia and heaven knows what other fees 1 think not. Yet schools today not Only service students in the traditional manner and not Only Supply them with books workbooks Art supplies and a Host of other things which arc usually bought by the parents in most other countries but with the Ever increasing and Stag Gering problems that children bring to school now Adays. The schools arc also obliged to include on their staffs nurses social workers Counselor psychologists t and a Host of other specialists not to speak of the necessity of specially equipped buses ramps facilities and special equipment to serve the needs of All. The school Day is needlessly Long for the very Young adults arc fighting for Jhc 35-hour work week while 6 year Olds arc spending 32.5 hours a week at their nine year Olds arc taking work Home on top of their working week. Much of this is More beneficial to a working Parent than it is to a Little child who might learn to dislike school because of the Long hours and the concomitant stress. All this is offered for $21.85 a Day or $3.64 per hour. Schools appear to still be the Best bargains around. In conclusion i must emphasize i am not such a fool As to believe that Given More dollars All will be solved. But i do think that it is fatal and irresponsible to minimize its importance in the Way that it has be come fashionable to do. There is no question about the dedication of teach ers. There is no question of the need to improve what we have. But we cannot ignore the fact that while needs problems and costs arc increasing at an alarm ing rate we cannot say with a straight face that the increase of a Dollar a Day per child is adequate to meet the expenses of Quality education. Kaulin j. Bayorh Rhein main a West Germany parents thankful for Aid Given injured boy on april 30 my two sons were Riding their bicycles Home from the Amelia Earhart hotel in Wiesbaden. While trying to avoid a car my son Jeremy lost control of his bicycle flipped and split his head open on a Brick Wall. Seeing All of the blood my son Nathan panicked and started waving Down cars. I understand that two German cars stopped and one left to Call an ambulance. A woman on a motorcycle stopped to assist As Well. A third car also stopped. This Man cleaned and bandaged the scrapes Jeremy got on his leg checked his head and helped control the bleeding. He talked to the boys and kept them Calm until the ambulance arrived. This Man went one step further. He gathered up my sons bicycles and brought them to our House so they would not get stolen and so the boys could be together until i could get to them. My children apparently told this Man that my Hus band was on temporary duty and that 1 was sick and having a bad bout with asthma. He was very concerned about my health As Well As my children. He told me very gently and very thoroughly what had happened to my children and what i needed to do. Due to the circumstances 1 neglected to find out much about this kind Man.
