European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 25, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday May 25, 1989 the stars and stripes Page 21 curtain rings Down on Dodds sports its grand finale Lime for Dodds sports 1988-89 tenure. Everything comes 10 a conclusion on the cinders soccer pitches and at the gymnastics stations sat urday. Track and Field took an Early out. The Centra european championships had to be moved to a mid week finish because it was impossible to get a decent facility on the weekend late in the season. Ramstein originally was scheduled to Host the be finals but it was discovered that the rams Cin High school track had been mis marked. Corrections were made but the new markings turned out to be identical As the ones that were supposed to be replaced. The track meet had to be relocated at the last minute. The gracious people at Augsburg High school enthusiastic workers again under a new administration after three years of not so Good times came to the Rescue twice. They hosted the Germany a championships last week at Rosnau stadium and they agreed to Host the be this week. Lahr s Danielle Larose set the Only Dodds re Cord in last week s qualifying meets when she tossed the shot 37-5 i at Augsburg. Mannheim s Corey Jen Kins came close in the 110-meter High hurdles with a 14.5 clocking Only one tenth of a second off the Mark. If the super weather holds out a lot of exciting races arc anticipated this week because other qualify ing times at the various meets match up closely. Maybe some records will fall. Soccer championships Are scheduled Friday and saturday on three fronts. The big schools boys meet will be at Patch the big schools girls tournament is at Heidelberg and the Small schools boys and girls eliminations arc scheduled in Munich. The top five aaa teams and the top three a squads qualified for the big schools Competition. Those tournaments will follow a single elimination format with six games being played Friday the third place and championship games on saturday. In typical Dodds fashion the Small schools tournament goes under a different format. The a Central a South and bin nor league champions and the Post season tournament champions from each league advanced to Munich. If the league Cham Pion also won the tournament the tournament run Ner up qualified for the olympic Pool style Competition. Frankfurt plays Host to the Central european gymnastics championships at the Fabrik sports Halle. Class in Competition is scheduled for thursday with class Iii and the optional a the elite of the gymnastics Field taking place Friday and saturday respectively. Take me out to the Ball game in t a favor Ite song of Dodds track and Field coaches these Days too Many of their athletes Are performing on the Diamond instead of the Oval. Youth services baseball a non Dodds activity. Is taking its toll because its players now get High school varsity letters. The european forces swim league won the varsity letter Issue 15 months ago when Barbara Spyridon Pope Deputy assistant Secretary of defense in charge of family support education and safety instructed Dodds director John Strum pc to Autho Rize varsity letters for the swimmers even though swimming was not an official do Dos sport. The swimmers have had very Little effect on the Overall Dodds sports program. Not too Many peo ple defected from other sports. However the american pastime is baseball and the playing interest always has been there. Now that varsity letters Are being asgard cd that interest has increased manifold. We have lost about 20 kids off the track team since baseball started osterholz coach Steve Early lamented during the Germany a championships last week at Augsburg. Some of them actually competed in the first two meets and then went to baseball. Think Dodds has regulations Banning such moves within its sports program. And a couple of other performers who were going to be scholastically ineligible for track after May 1 arc playing baseball. I feel it s easier to play baseball because there is less self discipline demanded in a non school atmosphere. The eligibility rules Aren t As strict outside of other coaches said their programs had been affected but not so adversely As osterholz s. Gic Ssan s Harriett Smith said we re Down quite a bit in track numbers this year. However we Haven t lost anyone since the season began. Kids that were going to play baseball just did t come out for track. Dodds even has lost its priority to the is pro Gram. Last week s Mannheim Patch Gurmay a soccer games were transferred from the scheduled Patch venue to Stuttgart High school because a is base Ball game was scheduled at Patch. The panthers lost the Home Field advantage and the game. Last july when Dodds agreed to award varsity letters for baseball and girls softball a memorandum of understanding covering eligibility rules for Usa eur youth activities was drawn up and signed by Dodds Germany director Joe Blackstead and Michael Workman director of the Community and family support Agency. One of the stipulations read Una sports Branch personnel will insure that students meet the local High school Scholastic eligibility rules for participating in an official event. Additionally. Icy will ensure that students follow the local school s athletic code to maintain eligibility for the school letter. A Una representative will Monitor the eligibility of All baseball softball Leam members by contacting inc principal or design cd As required at the Start of the May i was the Date established for determining eligibility for is team members. Stuttgart principal Helen Ducey said Friday Fol lowing the Germany aaa track and Field championships which Stuttgart staged that no one had contacted her concerning eligibility of baseball players. Earlier Hanau athletic director and track coach Sandy Arbour and it Irmburg football coach and track assistant John Sullivan also said that As far a they knew no one had contacted representatives of heir schools regarding grades and eligibility. Arbour said she thought she had a tentative agreement with the Hanau is people that the base Ball team would t play any games until inc end of the High school season. It played May 6, and when she checked about it she was told that Hanau did thave any control of the situation Hal v corps had made up the schedule. Karen Ellis director of Usa eur youth serv ices also said monday that it was her understanding the baseball games would t Start before the end of school. Ellis also said that any people who Are ineligible for the balance of the High school sports season would be eligible to play is baseball. However she added the names of those people would not be submitted to the High school officials for letter recognition. Maybe some of the High school turned youth services athletes arc Del Sioning themselves. Maybe they won t just go play baseball and get a varsity letter. Girls softball has had an Impact on inc . High school sports program this year but that has nothing to do with any kind of a is invasion softball is an official Dodds sport for the . Girls. We fell that the girls needed another varsity sport this year to help balance our . Sports coordinator de Walson said earlier in the year. There was More interest in girls softball than there was in girls soccer so we went in that direction. The program has been warmly accepted by inc nol All the coaches were so enthusiastic As wat son. Several complained that they had lost potential athletes to softball one saying All of her Quality ten Nis players had switched sports. Several nominations for inc 1988-89 Slars and stripes athletes of the year have been received in the sports office. This is inc last week of Competition and inc in office deadline is the end of next week. Lii Sun and Supei Ramstein s Kun Dunn collect golds Bonn freshman Losi captures 1,500 refers by Ben Abrams i rep sports editor Augsburg West Germany a freshman showed her heels to a Veteran runner wednesday and ran away to Victory in the 1,500 meters. The race the first running finals event in the 1989 Central european track and Field championships was supposed to be a Down to the wire Battle Between Bonn freshman Tracy Losi and Stuttgart senior Juli Cyrus. But Losi took command at the gun and blistered the Rosnau stadium artificial turf with a 4 45.6 clocking and beat Cyrus by 13 seconds. I thought the race would be lots closer Losi said. Peterson pulled ahead in the seventh Lap but when the gun sounded for inc final Lap Kun was leading again. The Ramstein Ace pulled away to win by 25 Yards in 8 52.0 to Peterson s 8 58.0. There was nothing special about the accomplishments in the boys Field event finals wednesday. Baum older s scan Johnson showed improvement with each leap finally taking the triple jump at 43-11. Ramstein s John Dunn and Paul Horn both cleared 12-3 in the pole vault Dunn gelling the win by virtue of fewer misses. The 12-3 is the year s Busl but it is far off the Dodds record of 14 feel one fourth Inch. Wiesbaden s Mike March won the discus with a 140-1 Effort. Ramstein s Brian Kun wins 3,000
