European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 29, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 Ann Landers dear Ann Landers thank you for blowing the whistle on the cancer fund of America sweepstakes. That column was a terrific Public service but it came too late for me. I had already been taken in by those Slick operators. When i received a letter in forming me that i was a Winner in the $5,000 sweepstakes an asking me to donate $5 to help fight cancer in Exchange for a mystery gift i sent in my Check. According to a recent letter i will be receiving my prize they did t say what it would debut after Reading your column i m sure it will be 40 cents. Why can t the better business Bureau do something about these Crooks they arc clearly taking advantage of people left and right. Illinois dear Iii the cancer fund of America folks Are extremely Clever. They use language that keeps them half an inc this Side of the Law. They also rely heavily on the fact that most people Don t read carefully and that Barnum was right when he said there s a sucker born every minute. Read on. Dear Ann Landers the cancer fund of America is Only one of seven organizations soliciting people in this manner. All seven not for profit organizations have contracts with wat son & Hughey a direct mail firm in Alexandria va.,which docs their fund raising. All sweepstakes letters Are virtually identical and the motive is definitely not Charita ble. The seven organizations Are american heart disease prevention foundation inc., Montclair fund of America inc., Knoxville Tenn. Center for alternative cancer research also known As project cure of Dothan Ala. Walker cancer research Institute inc., Edgewood my. Pacific West cancer fund of Seattle. National animal Protection fund of Tulsa okla. Social Security Protection Bureau also known As foxhall corp., of & Hughey is currently being sued by the attorney general of Illinois for fraud and other states arc suing also. Betty fumes Abc to consumer reporter said Rob Ert Stone s License to practice Law was suspended three years ago in Virginia. Similar action is pending in Washington. Stunt is the lawyer who signed she pitches the sweepstakes solicitation was carefully timed to hit More than 200 million households during the Holiday season. Because americans arc by nature charitable Mil Lions of dollars went into the coffers of Watson & Hughey instead of to legitimate charities. When news of these abuses gets out Many people will unfortunately be reluctant to give to any Chanty however worthy. Note that the name of the phony organization sound very much like the legitimate organizations such As the american cancer society and the cancer re search foundation of America which for years have been doing a splendid Job. Thanks again Ann Landers for being such a Good watchdog on behalf of All americans. We Are grateful. Professional overseer Chicago dear overseer i Hope All my readers will be More cautious about sending Money for causes or entering contests that ire supposed to help the afflicted. Give Only to organizations that you know. If you Are Uncertain Call the Bette business Bureau or the attorney general s office. If you get snookered once shame on them. If you get snookered twice shame on you. Los Angeles times syndicated columnist Landers Welcome your letters. You can write to her m care of the stars and stripes Apo 09211. . Forces letters remembering those who served America in late april my supervisor s brother was Mur dered by a gunman in a Nebraska truck Stop. It i bad enough when a loved one is taken away by natural causes or an act of god but to have a life taken away by such an act of violence shocks and dismay me. When my supervisor returned to England i Learned that his brother was a Veteran of the Viet Nam War and by All rights a silent hero of our time. My supervisor s brother served in Vietnam fro october 1967 to january 1969. During his tour of duty he received three purple hearts. The third award of the purple heart was for wounds he received while saving the life of a Marine and a civil Ian during heavy fighting in a Small Village drama that was repeated hundreds of times before the War ended. He returned Home As did thou Sands of others to the cold reception of our coun try and people. This Veteran s personal goal in life was to be a truck being uni had half to death in 1977 during a construction Accident he recovered and fulfilled his dream and became a truck Driver. His determination will and love for our country arc in question served this great nation for almost a dec Ade i feel very strongly about anyone who has served their memorial Day shadowed by the senseless death of a Vietnam Veteran who i feel could have been a Friend i May have known and May never forget i am deeply Many veterans i have known Are the greatest of our country s patriots. I look up to them with admiration and respect. Silently on this Day i reflect and remember those who we owe so much. Join the millions of americans throughout our country and Pray with All my heart. It is unfortunate that the vast majority of Ameri cans stationed in West Germany usually Only see half of this Beautiful country. Unknown to Many there exists an equally Beautiful part of Germany the North. It stretches from the quaint fishing villages and hanseatic sea ports of Ost Friesland to the breath taking Rhine River Valley and the pastoral Sieger land. While May be the most Famou Castle in Germany the Moln Storland offers numer Ous striking castles and fortresses As Well. We All know about the Black Forest yet How Many have seen the heavily forested Sauerland and the strangely shaped Juniper Trees which mingle with Green Birches and purple Heather in the Linic Burgher do the cities visit Kiln Cologne with its Cathe dral or Dortmund with cultural sights breweries and never ending night life. Try Germany s Sec Ond largest City Hamburg with All of its delights and enormous Appeal. The people More Friendly than one would Ever Hope. When planning your next family weekend or your next Freedom from Barracks life consider the North. Whether you re looking for somewhere new to explore something different or merely Check ing out the girls try driving the few extra hours and find this wonderful place. You definitely will not be disappointed. Sgt. Bill Schenck Heidelberg West Germany life sentence for Hamadi called lenient those who advocate less than a life sentence for Hijacker Mohammed All Hamadi have their Heads examined. As far As i m concerned a life sentence just might be too lenient. So he might not have actually pulled the trigger when Petty officer 2nd class Robert Dean Stela pm was killed but he is just As guilty As his hypocritical islamic Brothers who can claim that god is great on one hand and with the other Bend their ideology to the Point when they can justify within their own sick minds that murdering another human being can actually help their cause. With All of the hype surrounding the trial one can conclude that the publicity alone is enough to satisfy terrorist desires. We can also probably conclude that acts of terrorism toward the United states will continue. Be it known to All terrorists everywhere that their undeclared War against the United states is a lost cause lest we remind them so with More of the same patronage and valor displayed for the continuance of Freedom for All peace Loving people.
