That column was a terrific Public service but it came too late for me. I had already been taken in by those Slick operators. When i received a letter in forming me that i was a Winner in the $5,000 sweepstakes an asking me to donate $5 to help fight cancer in Exchange for a mystery gift i sent in my Check. According to a recent letter i will be receiving my prize they did t say what it would debut after Reading your column i m sure it will be 40 cents. Why can t the better business Bureau do something about these Crooks they arc clearly taking advantage of people left and right. Illinois dear Iii the cancer fund of America folks Are extremely Clever. They use language that keeps them half an inc this Side of the Law. They also rely heavily on the fact that most people Don t read carefully and that Barnum was right when he said there s a sucker born every minute. Read on. Dear Ann Landers the cancer fund of America is Only one of seven organizations soliciting people in this manner. All seven not for profit organizations have contracts with wat son & Hughey a direct mail firm in Alexandria va.,which docs their fund raising. All sweepstakes letters Are virtually identical and the motive is definitely not Charita ble. The seven organizations Are american heart disease prevention foundation inc., Montclair  fund of America inc., Knoxville Tenn. Center for alternative cancer research also known As project cure of Dothan Ala. Walker cancer research Institute inc., Edgewood my. Pacific West cancer fund of Seattle. National animal Protection fund of Tulsa okla. Social Security Protection Bureau also known As foxhall corp., of  & Hughey is currently being sued by the attorney general of Illinois for fraud and  other states arc suing also. Betty fumes Abc to consumer reporter said Rob Ert Stone s License to practice Law was suspended three years ago in Virginia. Similar action is pending in Washington. Stunt is the lawyer who signed she pitches the sweepstakes solicitation was carefully timed to hit More than 200 million households during the Holiday season. Forces letters remembering those who served America in late april my supervisor s brother was Mur dered by a gunman in a Nebraska truck Stop. It i bad enough when a loved one is taken away by natural causes or an act of god but to have a life taken away by such an act of violence shocks and dismay me. When my supervisor returned to England i Learned that his brother was a Veteran of the Viet Nam War and by All rights a silent hero of our time. My supervisor s brother served in Vietnam fro october 1967 to january 1969. During his tour of duty he received three purple hearts. The third award of the purple heart was for wounds he received while saving the life of a Marine and a civil Ian during heavy fighting in a Small Village drama that was repeated hundreds of times before the War ended. He returned Home As did thou Sands of others to the cold reception of our coun try and people. This Veteran s personal goal in life was to be a truck  being uni had half to death in 1977 during a construction Accident he recovered and fulfilled his dream and became a truck Driver. His determination will and love for our country arc in question  served this great nation for almost a dec Ade i feel very strongly about anyone who has served their  memorial Day shadowed by the senseless death of a Vietnam Veteran who i feel could have been a Friend i May have known and May never forget i am deeply  Many veterans i have known Are the greatest of our country s patriots.
