European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - August 28, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Monday August 28, 1989 the stars and stripes Page 25 sabers snip 2 rocket streaks by Bucky Fox suit writer Span Dahlem a West Germany when the Spang Dahlum sabers beat Rhein main 13-0 sunday they slashed two rocket streaks. Rhein main s 14-Gamc winning Streak finished. The rockets three game regular season shutout Streak history. Both streaks were struck by a lanky Saber Quarter Back named Mcluca Thurmond. His stunning 75-Yard touchdown Gallop with five seconds left in the first half gave Spang a 7-0 Lead. He then directed the sabers on three Long drives in the second half to Clinch their 3-0 record and drop the defending Safe champions to 2-1. Not bad for a Spang Rookie making his first Continental sports conference Start and Only because Jack Safe football Craft sprained his ankle the week before. He s still learning said Spang coach Dave lock Wood who added that Craft is still his no. I a a. On sunday though Thurmond was the big cheese. His touchdown was one of the most incredible in re cent Safe history. Consider the circumstances. First quarterbacks Don t run 75-Yard touchdowns. Second they Don t run them against a defense that had fired so Many Zero the past year and a half. Third Thurmond got his Chance Only after Rhein main ran into Spang s punter on the previous play. That gave the sabers a first Down at their 25 with 26 seconds left. What to Call Why a "74," naturally Lockwood said that was the name of the play a pass play. Then rather than run 74 Yards Thurmond ran 75. It was a spectacular play said Lockwood. But it was supposed to be a pass. It was really a busted it busted right through the rockets. Their hapless Arm tackles left them sprawled behind Thurmond. Maybe Rhein main s defense missed its Leader line Backer Jay Grigson stuck in Turkey on try. But that defense had Al Csc nose guard Mike Drew for one last game. He produced two sacks one of which to d Thurmond for a few plays. They ran at will admitted Drew who rotates this week to Travis fab Calif. It seemed every time i went this Way they went that Way. I think we were out coached. I Felt Lockwood out coached our Lockwood s sabers rushed 53 times for 227 Yards. And that was with their Star tailback , sitting out much of the second half after taking a hard hit to the head. Mix finished with 40 Yards. His replacement James Williams who played his second game As a Saber led All rushers with 74 Yards. Richard Specht the former Pitburg Baron gained 70 Yards including 19-Yard to that made it a Lucky 13 Points with 12 40 left. Is Ken George Span Uhlem s Richard Specht. Rushes for 70 Yards Spang Dahlum played a great game said Rhein main coach Warren Stanley. The first half they did t do much bul then we self destructed. The second half they just outplayed us. 1 thought it would be the other Way the rockets looked ready to grab Early control. Capitalizing on a Low Spang Dahlum snap in punt for mation. Rhein main reached the 5-Yard line Midway through the first Quarter. Greg Booker took a pitch and romped into the end zone. But a holding Call erase the score and the rockets proceeded to March 32 More Yards backward on Ihrck penalties and a sack. That sack belonged to Spang tackle Mark dip Rcd when the sabers were through stuffing Rhein main s ground game to the tune of 1.7 Yards per Rush and holding us lbs to Io-of-23 passing for 134 Yards they had collected six sacks. Three belonged to do pc. A third year Saber. Most of Rhein main s passing yardage came from Tor Mill. He Quarter backed the second and fourth quarters and hit 8 of 17 passes for 124 Yards. He also fumbled away a scoring Chance at the Spang 6 on the series before Thurmond s to. Still. Hill said he should be started Over Tony Smith. I feel when i m ready and healthy i should play said Hill. Hill also noted Rhein main s bickering Success for some reason brings problems. We got big Heads for this game. We thought we d come in and blow them but Rhein main through we be got it wrapped said Hill. After this game i won t sit until the third or fourth Quarter to play. It s us against Simbach in the championship game that will have to be without Star tight end t. Cole Man who leaves this week for Korea. Thai s the least of Rhein main s problems if you listen to last year s most valuable player cornerback Butch Watkins. He s upset Over Doug Stanley return ing last week to coach the defense. We can win if we get some coaches said Watkins. Spang was very Well prepared. There s dissension on our team because Doug quits then comes Back and names the starting lineup. There arc big rumblings serious Doug Stanley s father Warren Stanley says the rockets will overcome that dissension. And overcome sunday s loss. No question in my mind said the head coach. I think when the season is Over it will be a Blip on the football screen. Nothing More. This is a great team and Well come the next time these teams meet. Sept. 30 at Rhein main it could be for the Eiful division title. Said rocket safely Vincent Parham Ain t nobody Gonna beat us maybe not but Deluca Thurmond and the sabers did something unique enough beat Rhein main once. In sunday s other Csc game Wiesbaden 12, Wilbur re Pitburg a West Germany Floyd and Flud proved to be fans Lastic for the flyers who chalked up their first Victory.
