European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 07, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday. September 1989 the stars and stripes Page 11 Ann Landers dear Ann Landers this afternoon while driving Home from the Market a family of five out for a walk caught my Eye. The woman could have Bee me smiling the sunlight catch ing her hair carrying a Small child in her arms. Her husband walking beside her appeared Strong and determined. Two Little tousled haired boys skipped alongside laughing but looking a Little weary. It was a sight that went straight to my heart. The woman was dressed in ragged cloth Sand had a sleeping bag on her Back. She looked As if she needed a Bath. The Man carried a suitcase in one hand and sleeping bag under his Arm. I wondered where they would sleep tonight and How they managed with Only two sleeping bags. 1 wondered when was the last time they had a warm meal and a Bath. 1 wondered what they did about birthday celebrations and Christmas How they managed when the children got and what they dream about at night. I went Home fed my two Little girls a meal of Beans and Rice and tried to figure out How i could save my House from foreclosure. I prayed that i would get som child support soon and find a Job. My unemployment benefits Are about to end i had some Beans and Rice left Over two extra Beds and a Couch so i went looking for that proud family but i never found them. hit Home for me tonight. It is a Dis Grace that this problem exists in America and it seems to be getting worse. How can the politicians sleep at night s.c., Weaverville Calif. Dear Vav Mlac you be written a powerful letter. Like you i would like some answers to your closing question. Dear Ann Landers when i read the letter from the Mother of an Over weight child i knew i had to write. Fifteen years ago i was 7 years old and overweight. The hell the kids at school put me through could have been avoided had my parents helped me lose weight. Instead they told me if they won t play with you because you Aren t thin they Aren t Worth having for looking Back i can that my parents meant Well but they did me no favor. Instead of giving me a cookie and a Hue they should have changed my eating habits and done something about the food in the House. My Mother should have served More fruit and vegetables and Low caloric desserts and cleared the House of cookies cupcakes potato chips and Candy. She should have insisted that i ride my Bike or walk in Stead of driving me everywhere. I should have been encouraged to play Tennis and swim. There was entirely too much to in my growing up years and not enough exercise. 1 feel Lucky that i turned out reasonably stable. Most overweight children grow up to be insecure. I Hope you will print my letter Ann. If my parents had seen one like it years ago my life might have been very different. Gulfport Gulfport this letter is too late for your parents but it s just in time for millions of others. Please please listen to what this woman is saying. Apo 09211, . Form letters closing of Auto Craft shop explained the army and air Force Exchange service cafes and the Powers that be at incl Lingen Barracks near Stuttgart have done a great disservice to the soldiers they Are supposed to support. On june 5 the automotive Craft shop was permanently closed. It is being remodeler and will become an cafes garage. This Craft shop was in constant demand by the soldiers assigned to incl Lingen and sur rounding areas. The Craft shop consisted of about 13bays, including four lifts and a professional paint Bay. On the outside of the building is a Large fun cd in. Cement parking area and another lift. There have been different stories behind this trans action. One is that cafes agreed to terms of converting half of the Craft shop into an cafes garage and Shar ing the building for both purposes. After the Craft shop was closed and renovation started cafes supposedly stated that it was not willing to share the building any longer. The other Story is that the supervisor of the Craft shop was Given two choices by the Powers that be to replace the Craft shop open a Craft shop in Echt ring in 25 minutes from incl Lingen or move a building from Echt Cringen to Nellinger to use As the Craft shop. Anybody with any common sense would realize that these arc not realistic solutions to this problem. Writing this idler will not change any decisions that have already been made concerning this mistake but maybe the reasoning behind the decision will be clarified. The people who will suffer the most Are the younger soldiers who cannot afford the cafes prices and now do not have any place to perform the work themselves. Concurrent to this Issue is the fact that at least one vehicle has been improperly transported by Fork lift to the property disposal area on incl Lingen. This vehicle was being repaired in the billets area due to the closing of the automotive Craft shop. This vehicle was prop Erly registered and insured at the time of this incident. Chief warrant officer 2 Danny Noss , West Germany editor s note Brig. Gen. Robert p. Mcfarlin commander 2nd corps support come replies closure of the automotive Craft shop at Nellings Barracks is a temporary necessity. Although it is currently an inconvenience in the Long run services and facilities available to our Community will be greatly improved. The closing is just one part of a phased operation i provide one Stop shopping for like services. Initial phases of the operation combined privately owned vehicle Pov inspection and registration an cafes part store and garage and will soon include Pov inbound outbound shipping services. Future phases include an Auto Craft shop combined with a vehicle stripping Yard for accessible Low Cost parts from junked vehicles. The operation is scheduled for completion in fiscal year 1991. Our cafes staff has been fully supportive and has never refused to cooperate in this initiative. It will take time but we feel the improvements offered to our Community will far outweigh the temporary inconvenience. Reader turned off by tobacco chewers i was pleased when the army was determined to rid the workplace of unwanted cigarette smoke. Overnight the air at work became Clear and for the first time in a Long while i could see what my smoking co workers looked like but now there is another Scourge fast encroaching upon the workplace the dreaded tobacco Chow or instead of smelly cigarette smoke and burning eyes i must now contend with soda cans used As spi Toons and soldiers spewing out Brown juice into what once was a Coffee cup. I guess what concerns me most outside of the obvious health dangers is the unsightly Ness of these sol Diers. The idea of gazing at the bulged lip and Check of a Soldier while Brown spittle forms at the Corner of his Mouth nauseated me. Smokers May cry tobacco chewers will undoubtedly shout but i stand firm. I do not begrudge the Soldier his her right to shorten his life by smoking or chewing. I do however expect my work place to be free of secondhand smoke and unsightly spi Toons and soldiers. The army has taken care of the cigarette problem. It is now time for a decision on the tobacco chewing problem. Some might say that As an no All i need Dois make on the spot corrections. But the problem is army wide and Calls for a centralized policy decision. Staff sri.
