European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 20, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes 11 Ann Landers letters dear Ann Landers i am a waitress in a Papular cafe. Last Friday night something happened that made me write my first letter to Ann Landers. A party of four came in for dinner. They seemed to enjoy the food and said the service was wonderful. After dinner they stayed to dance and had several cocktails. By the end of the eve Ning the Tab was $ 173. One of the of men gave me $175 and said keep the when i looked at him in shocked disbelief he reached into his Wallet handed me another Dollar and said Well re member i told him ill remember you Here is my question Ann what should a waitress do when after providing an entire evening of Good service she gets a really Crummy tip should she say something to the customer or should she Swallow it i be had people say if the prices in this place weren Tso High i would have tipped you Ann the prices in Memphis arc half of what they Are in new York for a comparable evening. I wish i had the guts to say if you can t afford it stay Home. Wine is cheaper by the gallon and you would t have to pay someone to clean up after millions of people read your column every Day. You arc the voice of the people. Please let me know How you feel about this. Right How my feet Hurt and i mad As hell but i m willing to listen. Dog tired and fed up in Tennessee dear tired and fed up a tip is not mandatory it s whatever a customer wants to give. No service person should ask for a bigger tip. I agree that it s downright despicable to leave a $2 tip Ona Tab of s173. The Man should have Given you at least $25, but like everything else in life you win a few and lose a advice is to maintain your dignity no matter what. Dear Ann Landers in a recent column you told Gullible in new Jer sey to hang up immediately if she received a obscene Telephone Call. I owned and operated an answering service for six years so i know something about obscene Calls. We Learned that you will get a much better result if you do not hang up. Just put the phone Down. Remain silent and let the party talk on and on. If you hang up the creep will continue to Call Back. What these nuts enjoy most is to Shock people. The get their jollies when women scream at them and give them lectures on decency. If you really want to get their Goat Don t hang up. Tie up the Kook s line while you Wash your hair or read a Book. After about 10 minutes of deaf ening silence hell Cross your name off his list. Bunny in Erie Bunny thanks for the definitive solution. It makes a lot of sense. Dear Ann Landers i always told myself i would never Tell my daughter in Law How to raise her children but i m having a hard time keeping my Mouth shut. My granddaughter is 4 years old. She is neither Over weight nor underweight. Whenever i am at their House for supper or when they Are at mine there is a fight atthe table about what Jessica does t want to eat. Her Mother is forever haranguing her because she does t like certain vegetables. The child usually ends up in tears. 1 Don t know How much longer lean wit Ness these fights and remain silent. Please advise. Wisconsin earwigs you re Wise to stay out of it Call the child s paediatrician and ask him or her to talk to the Mother about a less combat Ive approach to altering her daughter s eating habits. Americans proud of Nijm Egen behaviour this is in reference to a recent letter concerning american conduct during the Nijm Egen March. I was one of the members representing the air Force and Ramstein a Germany. I have participated in the four Days March at Nijm Egen forthe past four years. I am especially upset about the writer s comments about americans not putting their Best foot allow me to educate him on a few facts. First the air Force docs not sponsor teams to attend the marches. This Means that the Cost for billeting and food comes out of our own held Many car washes and other fund raisers so that we could participate. Second we started training in february and continued to do so until the second week of july. We Are not relieved of duty to train prior to the March so our training was conducted on our off duty time. We started with at least 20 people who wanted to participate at Nijm Egen and after months of train ing that number was reduced to 12. All of us finished the March third if the writer was participating ail a Tea member he would have realized How difficult it was to March in formation when there were Over 28,000civilians marching. There were numerous times that we had to break formation due to the Trail and num Ber of people on it. Last but not least we Sang ourselves hoarse while marching and there was no doubt in anyone s mind that we were americans and proud of it. Each Mem Ber of the team carried an american Flag on his Rucksack and handed out hundreds of Small flags tothe spectators. One final note of the four air Force teams that started Nijm Egen All four finished. I am extremely proud of All the members on our team who did put their Best foot Forward and brought the team award Home if the writer wishes he May Contact me and joins for next year s March tech. Sgt. Robert e. Bonnett Ramstein a a West Germany you recently printed a letter from a writer who was part of the Nijm Egen March. I also marched at Nijm Egen. I was a member of the i St Maint in Tea represented the 2nd corps support come. I have several comments concerning the writer s letter. Every team that marched was doing just that marching. They did not walk or run and they did not act like a Bunch of undisciplined civilians in uni form As the Good writer claims. We marched with Pride and dignity. It was Tough and very self demand ing we expected it to be so. My unit started training in March and in april we had a nine team March off to determine who was the Best of 2nd corps support come. The top two team were sponsored by the command to go to Holland. Obviously there must have been some degree of physical fitness necessary. By the second Day my heels consisted of two Large blisters and i had to slow Down. My teammates stuck by me slowing their own Pace to accommodate my own. At one Point we seemed to be crawling. Eve then i continued to receive encouragement and assistance from my buddies. Due to the severity of my foot condition the Blis ters and broken Arches included i chose to drop out on the fourth Day. It was a difficult decision mad with the Best interest of the team in mind. The Deci Sion was mine not the team s. I knew i could have finished but not at the Pace the team was accustomed to. After the March maj. Gen. Thomas b. Arwood commander of the 3rd corps support come. And commander of the army troops marching at Nijmie Gen stated no matter now hard you train you can t Stop a our team As Well As the other 49 teams called cadence the whole Way. I made no difference whether we were singing to the Trees or marching through a town. Old glory was there beyond a Shadow of a Mem bars of our team had As Many As seven flags carried on each Rucksack. We gave these As to kens of Friendship and Freedom to children and senior citizens bringing indescribable smiles and army provided an official color guard that marched with us thus providing the presence of the worldwide Symbol of Freedom. Out of the 800 army personnel present Only 12 dropped out. Judging by the reactions of the thou Sands of spectators the . Forces were definitely keeping the Light of Freedom burning very brightly. We certainly put our Best foot with blisters blood sweat and worn out boots Forward. Spec. Michael j. Kissinger i Heilbronn West Germany Praise for Canadian comrades in arms for a Long time i be read complaints about How rude americans arc to our German hosts and complaints from americans about How our hosts arc rude to us. And frankly i agree with both sides. But there is one group of people Over Here who arc often forgotten and who i believe deserve a tip of the hat for their behaviour and character. I refer to our comrades in arms the Canadian forces and the individuals in and out of uniform who make up the Canadian presence in Germany. I have been Lucky enough to work and socialize with several of these people and i have never met one of them whom i did t like. Sometimes their dedication professionalism and just Plain pleasant demean makes me embarrassed about the conduct of my fellow americans. For those americans who Aren t Lucky enough to have any canadians nearby you can Sec what i mean by visiting the Canadian air base near Baden Baden. Shopping there is a True pleasure. Their base Exchange carries Many More local products than any . Commissary i be been to and their snack bar puts cafes and Burger King to shame. In fact it is not a snack bar but a full fledged restaurant with fantastic full course meals for very Low prices. Why can t cafes do the same but the Best part is the people. Whether they be Cashiers salespeople or customers they arc invariably the friendliest and most courteous people i be met in Germany. So from at least one i Here Are my compliments to All you canadians. You re Good sgt. 1st class Wayne m. Foster a Solingen West Germany european edition commander editor in chief it col Suzanne l.
