European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 29, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Friday september 29, 1969 the stars and stripes Page 25 commentary question to Shoof or not to shoot i be mentioned occasionally Whai we can expect from our european hosts when out on a Hunt. And there arc certain things they expect of us. The american Hunters. There have been times when my european guide shave told me to shoot and expected me to comply. Then for Good reason i have elected otherwise. Usually after explaining my reason they be understood and we be both had the peace of mind that by not shooting no animals were wounded and no accidents happened. A Story from a Hunter reminds me of some of my own experiences when it comes to those decisions to shoot or not shoot. It goes like this. My permit was for two kerb Sake Roebuck of any class to be hunted in that Lovely lonely and afforested area South of Crail sheim. I took a 5-year-old Sec scr six Pointer at 5 25 . My second Day there which promised to give me ample time to enjoy the country with minimal Hunting pressure. At 9 that same morning i was sitting in front of the forestry hut waiting for the forester sewing a rip in my poncho watching he Trees grow an otherwise not terribly occupied. The Young forester arrived agitated. A Schb Ockham gotten into a newly planted and fenced area and could t be persuaded to leave. The forester had no Rifle on his motorcycle i told you he was a Young one and asked would i please come and try a Shotat the seedling chomping culprit. 1 agreed. The seeded area was some 160 meters Long on slope and 100 meters wide. There was a House at the top of the slope and there were five Brown cow grazing hard against the Fence outside at the Bottom. Inside the Fence were stumps stump holes rocks deep ruts where logs had been dragged and just a banquet of Berry Bushes ferns and Sweet Juicy seed Lings. And a stubborn Schbock gourmet. It was the beginning of the Blat Zeit rutting sea son. The Schbock like so Many of us with two feet Mark Swearengen or four hooves had had to choose Between foraging enough food for the Winter or finding a fickle female who might leave the next morning. Me made his Choice which was to go for the food. The Young forester sent his two Lumberjacks into the fenced zone to Start the animal put me up a tree across the Trail and then climbed up the ladder after me until my feet rested on his shoulders. Of s bodkins i thought. He s Dewey i m Gridley and this is he says you May fire when ready and he did. The Lumberjacks started the Schbock and reappeared against the Fence at the lower end. Right where my 30-06 could have gone through him an ricocheted into one of those cows. I did t shoot. The forester became irked. He gave More orders to the Lumberjacks an they beat for the Schbock in the Uphill direction. The animal appeared from a logging rut about mid Field heading Uphill to my leu. 1 was trying to smooth my left hand swing when i i d lost sight of one of the Lumberjacks. I did t shoot. The forester became More irked. He dec ended angrily from our tire control Tower and went into the seeded area with the two men. Then Uphill out of sight in the Bushes and the Rutland stump holes. Just before he disappeared he asked can you shoot a running Schbock Why but of course. I lied in reply. After a while there came a bellowed Schiss shoot since he was using the familiar form of the second person in German and the imperative Mode of the verb. I reckoned he was really serious. The Schbock appeared on my left flank heading downhill at flank Speed. I acquired the target Laid off deflection for his rate settled the tracking. He vanished behind a clump of Bushes. I maintained the tracking rate reacquired him on the other Side of the Bushes adjusted for the new deflection. Then keep ing one Eye on those three vulnerable humans one Eye on those five idiot cows and one Eye on the target through my Rifle scope. I fired. Got him. The Bullet hit some six inches Back from his leading the Young forester was ecstatic. He liked me again. Waidmann Sycil he said and what a splendid shot i Drew figure eights in the Trail with the Tow of my Boot and modestly replied Well it waste Best i could do he did t need to know i d almost set in too much my thanks to Jake Chamberlain who closed with the following so Here arc my Points. Mark. The germans expect that any Hunter including an american Hunter will be disciplined enough to shoot when told. And skilled enough to shoot what they should cleanly. Butt seemed that Young forester had risked three human lives on my shooting. As for me i think that we Hunter should be self disciplined enough not to shoot when we know we should to no Matt what the .
