European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - October 4, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 dear Abby this is a message to those men and women who try to prevent women from entering abortion clinics and carry big signs that say they kill babies Here have you signed up to adopt a child if not Why not is it be cause you Don t want one. Can Tafford one or Don t have the time patience or desire to raise a child what if a woman who was about to enter a family planning clinic saw your sign then decided not to have an Abor Tion but chose instead to give her baby to you would you accept it what if the Mother belonged to a minority group or was addicted to drugs or tested positive for aids Why arc you spending your time carrying a sign Why Aren t you volunteering to baby sit a child born to a single Mother so she can work Why Haven t you opened your door to a pregnant teen Ager whose parents have kicked her out when she took your advice and decided not to have an abortion As for the taxpayers who resent paying for abortions who do you think pays for Foster care welfare social workers and juvenile delinquency the taxpayers. Let s talk about something Money can t buy love. Have you Ever visited a Home for abused and unwanted children have you Ever been to juvenile Hall and seen the children who have committed crimes because they were born to mothers who did t want them i m not thrilled about abortion but i Don t think anyone has the right to Tell others not to have one unless he or she has done the things i have mentioned above. So to those carrying those signs and trying to pre vent women from entering family planning clinics heed my message if you must be against abortion Don t be a hypocrite make your time and Energy count. Hates hypocrites in Santa Ana Calif. Dear hates i could t have said it better. Or As Well. Dear Abby i be seen some of the most outrageous headlines in the tabloids and magazines that Are sold at the Check out stands in supermarkets. They always feature famous people usually movie Sta Sand later you find out that most of the stories Aren t even True i m talk ing about Flat out Bald faced lies. Now 1 hear that they actually put the head of one famous person on the body of another showing them together when they have never even met each other How can they get away with stuff like that i would think some of those famous people would sue those publications for every dime they had. Or is it True that celebrities Don t care what people say about them As Long As they spell their names right appalled in Kansas dear appalled it s not True that celebrities Don t care what people say about them they do care. But what s the alternative filing a lawsuit is not Only expensive it Calls at Tention to the lie and serves to perpetuate it. And there Are those who will say where there s smoke there must be most celebrities wisely choose to ignore the lies a Belous As they May be. And As for the people who buy those publications they Don t care whether the gossip is True or not As Long As it makes Good Reading. Go defends rights of a non smoker As a single Soldier i have no Choice but to live in the Barracks. Being a non smoker i asked my platoon sergeant to put me in a non smoking room. He at first told me i. Had no Choice in the matter and that i had to live with it followed by excuses such As not having any non smoking rooms and it is too much of a hassle to move a few people around for one How Ever after i made it Clear to him and a few other cos that i was going to pursue this matter All the Way up through my Chain of command they gave up and moved me into a non smoking room. Arc there any rules or regulations covering this problem what if there is Only one non smoker in the Section and he has to be put in a smoking room should he leave the room when his roommates Light up the 3rd inf div has a policy regarding smoking. This policy is called controlling smoking #2-19 dated Jan. 6. 1988. It basically covers smoking in department of the army buildings not the Barracks specifically rooms and the Rooming of smokers and non smoking personnel. Could someone Clear up this problem i am writing this letter for the Sake of the next non smoker who gets shoved into a room with a couple of smokers. Name and location withheld editor s note maj. Mike Phillips health promotion coordinator human resources division of fice of the Deputy chief of staff personnel he usar eur replies in accordance with Usa eur and department of the army policy smoking areas May be designated Only where these areas Are sufficiently isolated to protect non shaken from the effects of tobacco smoke. Com Manders and supervisors Are not required to designate smoking areas if these conditions do not exist. Written policy on smoking cannot cover every Situa Tion however both Usa eur and he a policy clearly indicate that Given a situation where a smoke Rand non smoker arc located in confined spaces e.g., office billets etc., the area must be designated As no i smoking. Thank you for identifying a weakness in the published policies on controlling smoking. The next Revi Sion of Usa eur policy will be More definitive in terms of smoking in billeting areas. Reader concerned Over use of plastic bags i am writing in response to the recent responses to the letter on plastic bags. I too have been concerned about the use of plastic bags in the commissaries and exchanges and the responses that i have received have been similar. The commissary and Exchange spokesmen always emphasize the Short term Cost Sav Ings and not the Long term costs to the environment. The response mentioning the possible future use of biodegradable bags sounds optimistic. Means to break Down to component parts usually by bacteriological Means. Neither the sunlight method necessitating 30 Days of direct expo sure nor the cornstarch method causing problems in landfills arc necessarily environmental helpful and the result itty bitty pieces of plastic Are More of a Salve to the conscience than a help to the Earth. Rather than the Pat answers of let s use plastic it s cheaper May we consider the possibility of Only using paper bags in the commissary paper bags Are More expensive in the Short term but in the Long term using Patch school fan cheers there have been 10 years of excellence in education an will be a Bright future ahead for Patch elementary school. Patch opened its doors in 1979, and in 1989 construction on additional classrooms nears and teachers of Patch elementary school Are proud to celebrate its birthday. The elementary Pat was selected unit of the year by the european Council of Pitsas. The principal of Patch or. Glenn Turquand recently received the National award for distinguished principals. As we celebrate our 10th birthday we find 10 original staff members still a part of the driving Force that continues the educational excellence at Patch elementary school. They Are Barbara Abel Irene Brunner Jan Dalzell Pepper Dennis Janet Dworschak such Hoffman Esther Smith Mavis Tell Queen Thompson and Donia Todd. We wish a Happy i oth birthday to the parents Stu dents and faculty of Patch elementary school. Kris Covington Val Hingen West Germany something that is recyclable and biodegradable is cheaper. The Long term Benefit of carefully and selectively cutting Down old Forest and replanting with new growing Trees that absorb Carbon dioxide May be Price less when considering the greenhouse effect and How it will reshape the world As we know it. Let us also consider being responsible citizens of this planet and going out and buying a shopping bag and not using plastic bags altogether. If that is not convenient paying a Small fee every time we need one As is done in Many Gerry in stores should be consid ered. Perhaps a reusable folding shopping bag that can be carried in a pocket or purse might be More Appeal ing. Serving the most deserving is a Nice phrase but it s now time that the most deserving Start thinking about How to serve Mother Earth or our children Are not going to have much of a future. It. Col.
