Troop transport Dorchester was wallowing through icy seas off Greenland. Most or the 900 troops on Board were asleep in their bunks. Sud Denly a torpedo smashed into the Dorchester s flank. Frantically pounding up the ladders the troops milled in confusion on the decks. In those dark moments or panic the coolest men aboard were four . Army chaplains 1st its. Clark v. The four chaplains led the men to boxes of life Jack ets and passed them out to the soldiers with boat Drill precision. When the boxes were empty the four Chap Lains quietly slipped off their own precious life preservers put them on four Young Gas and told them to jump. The Dorchester went Down 25 minutes later in a rumble of steam. Some 600 men were lost but the heroic chaplains had helped save Over 200. The last anyone saw of them they were standing on the slanting deck their arms linked in prayer to the one god they All Abby i have often wondered if anyone knows what happened to the four Young Gas who received the life preservers. Who were they the article states that although some 600 men perished when the Dorchester went Down about 200 were saved. Perhaps a survivor or a relative or Friend of a survivor will read this and write to you. So so Are not bad Odds i by writer opposes America s death penalty i am deeply shocked about the recent supreme court decision which allows the execution of adolescent and mentally retarded murderers. In doing so the United states of America is acting against International standards of Law which clearly make a distinction Between people at the age of discretion meaning adults and the mentally retarded or minors who Are not made fully responsible for their deeds. In t it absurd that on the one hand a 16-year-old should be completely responsible for his deeds and therefore be sentenced to death when on the other hand . Law forbids Sale of alcohol to persons under the age of 21? obviously people under 21 seem to be adult enough to be executed but not enough to drink Beer. I think that the death penalty completely disregards the Basic right to life. It is in my opinion the most inhuman degrading and cruel punishment possible. Once it is carried out it cannot be undone. In contrast to Public opinion the death penalty docs not have a deterrent effect. How come still has a rapidly increasing number of crimes it ranks higher than most of the other Western countries which have already abolished the death sentence but nevertheless do not have such a crime wave. In t it possible that the cruel punishment has a cruel effect on society i think that Law itself should set a Good example. If it docs not respect the right to life who else should Law should not be misled by feelings of revenge. In fact the death penalty is the Only punishment that follows the old an Eye for an Eye scheme. An arsonist s House will not be set on tire a burglar s Home will not be burglarized and a rapist will not be raped. So Why should a murderer be murdered the Usa is about the Only nation in the democratic Western world which still executes the death sentence. Since it has an enormous exemplary function on other smaller nations it would be very desirable if the . Government would abolish this gruesome punishment. If this letter can help to Start a discussion in this paper and within the american armed forces it will have served its purpose.
