Stoneham died sunday in a Scottsdale nursing Home after spending the last 13 years of his life in retirement near the giants Spring training Complex. He was one of the last of the base Ball entrepreneurs those with no outside business or corporate inter ests. He sold the club in 1976 after serving As its principal owner and president for 40 years. A Bronko Nagurski who played with a mean Streak and a Mission and became one of football s first stars during the Golden age of sport died of natural causes after a Short illness. He was 81. Nagurski who died sunday was a bullish 235-Pound fullback who starred for the Chicago bears and the University of Minnesota. He was with the bears from 1930-37 and again in 1943 and was a charter member of the pro football Hall of Fame. Many of Nagurski s contemporaries considered him the greatest foot Ball player Ever. When he became Alabama coach in 1987, there was criticism that he was not a protege of late Bear Bryant and had never beaten Cross state Nevaj Auburn. And he failed to beat Auburn in his ten ure at Alabama. This past season the Crimson tide won its first 10 games but closed with losses to Auburn in the regular season finale and to Miami in the sugar bowl. Alabama however offered Curry i1 three year Extension on his two year con tract which reportedly paid him $500.000 annually in salary and Side benefits. The person that comes to Alabama is a person who can handle the Curry said of his successor. The packers and then the rams. He then became head coach at Georgia tech in 1980. His seven year record there was 31-43-4, including a 17 14 win Over Michigan state in the 1985 All american bowl. Curry was 29-24-t. His last five years at tech. Curry s first Alabama team in 1987 lost to Michigan 28-24 in the Hall of Fame bowl to finish 7-5. His 1988 squad compiled a 9-3 record including a 29-28 Victory Over army in the Sun bowl
