European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - January 16, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes a Page 11ann Landers dear Ann Landers i had to write after Reading the letter in Praise of pigs. At the moment my daughter Jill and i Are living with four vietnamese potbellied. Jill bought Sweet pea. The Mother pig. At an exotic animal auction in Iowa. She was simply irresistible. We had two dachshunds Al the time. This pig thought she was a dog from Day one. Today a pig like Sweet pea would Cost at least $5,500. At a recent auction a sow and seven piglets went for $35,000. When Jill bought Sweet pea. She was told that the pig might be pregnant and sure enough she was. Sweet pea gave birth to three adorable piglets right in our living room. So now we have four but Sweet pea is my love. She weighs 60 pounds is 14 inches tall and sleeps on the sofa with the dachshunds. She comes when called sits on her haunches like a dog to beg for food and links a hello Quot to visitors. Potbellied Are extremely intelligent and very affectionate. They Are Dean and have no odor. The first ones were brought to the United slates in 1986 and Are now considered Ideal pets. Our pigs Are Housebroken and have fewer accidents than the dogs. When they have to go out they stand by the door Ana oink. A few years ago if someone would have told me that i would have four pigs living in my Home i would have said they were crazy. Now i cannot imagine what life would be without them. . Waukesha. Wis. Dear . Being an Iowa girl. I be seen lots of pigs but never one that i would allow in my living room. Thank you for widening my horizons. The things t least from my readers dear Ann Landers a few months ago my sister and i went shopping. She swiped some lipstick off a counter and slipped it into my purse without my knowledge. When we left the store and got into the car she said a Lei me Sec your 1 gave it to her. She took the lipstick out and put it in her coat pocket. I was shocked. Incidentally. I should Tell you that we arc not kids Ann. We Are in our 40s. Our husbands were in the Back scat and asked what was going on. I said. A my Darling sister shoplifted this lipstick and put it in my purse. She thinks it s a joke but i Don t Sec anything funny about it. In fact. I m mad As i was chosen citizen of the year in 1982 and was thinking what a Fine newspaper Story it would have made if i had been picked up for shoplifting when we arrived at our place i asked my sister and her husband if they would like to come in. The answer was an emphatic no. I could see they were both angry. When i told them i expected an apology they drove off in a Huff. Several weeks have passed and i have not seen my sister. My Mother and aunt think i am being stubborn because 1 insisted on an apology. They both feel it s up to me to reach out to my sister. I should Tell you that we have never got along and i be always been the one to Patch things up. Frankly i m sick of it. What do you advise a Mississippi mud dear Mississippi forget the apology and be civil to your sister for your mothers Sake. But Cool it socially and Don t go shopping with her again. She had no right to put you in such a hazardous position. My honest opinion is that your sister has a screw Loose. Cello Angeles times Syndicate and creators Syndicate Law of demand governs a fest decisions what can i say things hate changed a lot since Yon ame to Germany in 1968. Some of those changes have i have a quarrel with cafes. I am a big movie fan and love to go to the sunday matinees. A Long time ago before cafes took Over the movie Heaters i would go to the 2 o clock movie at the four Comers theater at Ramstein. 1 went for Many years. The better the movie the better the crowd. I know you arc going to bring Money up As the reason. A then cafes took Over. The matinee was changed to a kiddie show. 1 would like to remind you that there Are three Heaters in Ramstein. When the matinee stopped at Ramstein i moved to vog Cloch for the 4 o clock sunday matinee. Now that is Over. I keep forgetting that Money is More important than people. And while i have your attention cafes. I would like to talk about ice Cream. I can remember when i came to Germany in 1968. Cafes would make eggnog ice Cream for Christmas and my favorite Pistachio. You never make it anymore. And those Little chickens you kill at birth to serve to us at your snack bars. Come on cafes get with it. I have Only one More thing is there a Law against Cream soda Over Here in Germany in be been waiting for 20 years for it to get Here. 1 love Cream soda. 1 would make it myself if1 knew How. A name withheld Ramstein a West Germany editor s note a master sgt. Day ton p. Strick Vafes Europe replies land customer relations Liq a. Anges come about because people s tastes have changed. Movie matinees Are a Case in Point. Lack of attendance and Lack of Good grated movies available to us Are driving that train while children s matinees have recently been discontinued Al Voge Neh because of poor attendance these matinees Are still scheduled at sem Bach and Ramstein. Matinees of a More mature nature Are scheduled by local management when expected attendance warrants a showing. Eggnog and Pistachio ice Cream were special flavors featured More than five years ago but did not create enough volume to justify earn ing As regular flavors. We Are presently looking into the Small Chicken matter to see if maybe a Vendor slipped us some underside Duckers that Don t meet our specifications. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I m not aware of any Law forbidding Cream soda unless it s the Law of demand. The share of sales of sodas in cafes goes like this 60 percent in Colas 10 percent in Citrus sodas 8 percent in Lime sodas and the remainder split among Orange grape Ginger ale and Root Beer flavors. Current warehousing space allows us to carry Only the sodas in greatest demand. Sorry but Cream soda just does t make the Grade. In closing let me say that if there is a tremendous outpouring of demand for let s say Cream soda Pistachio ice Cream and movie matinees and people Are willing to support these products and services cafes is w Illing to listen. A cafes explains pricing of bottled water i m talking about bottled water Here a evian to be exact a in the Little bottles the plastic ones. Recently 1 went into the Darmstadt Shoppelle at Cambrai Fritsch Cavern and picked up a couple of these Little jewels. Unfortunately the cashier told me the water Cost 75 cents a bottle. That a 75 cents for 11 ounces. I returned the water not a Little frustrated since i had bought the same water in the past for 11 cents 25 cents and 45 cents depending on where and when i had bought it. Gucz the 1.5-Litcr bottle in the same store costs 95 cents. Logical huh hey this Story gets better. I leave Woodland All frustrated and mosey on Over to the snack bar just a few Yards away. And what do i spy behind the Glass you guessed it a evian water. Only better this time icy cold and enticing. How much i asked the cashier ?55 cents. Same water same Cavern same Community. Muttering to myself and shaking my head. I left. I then drove across town to Kelley Barracks and later that same Day went to the Small Exchange there. Once again the Small evian bottles of water were present. Out of curiosity i asked the cashier How much they Cost there. The answer 45 cents. Give me a break cafes. Even if the German government hates plastic bottles and arc somehow forcing the prices of bottled water up or even if handling costs As appeared in a previous edition of stars and stripes contribute to the exorbitant Price of water i fail to see How the same product in the same size in the same Type of Container in the same Community can be sold or three diff Crint prices All of which incidentally arc still Way too High a whatever happened to cafes providing goods at a reasonable Price. 1 suppose if i had visited the commissary. I would have seen the water at still a fourth different Price. A David b. Hamilton Darmstadt West Germany editor s note a master set. Dayton p. Strickland customer relations he cafes Europe replies thank you for bringing this situation to our attention. The Correct prices for the Small plastic bottles .33 liter of evian Are 35 cents at retail stores and 45 cents at food operations. A one liter bottle will sell for 75 cents and a Quarter later bottle will Cost 40 cents at retail stores. The Quarter liter bottle will Cost 50 cents at cafes food operations. Those persons not Brand conscious can Purchase third liter bottles of Alpen Wasser at food operations for 40 cells. As you might already know new environmental Laws in Germany have forced us to go to non returnable Glass bottles.
