Bostic also said that in Otto i Ber 1988, Morris discovered a dangerous Security flaw in another aspect of unix and brought it to com Puter scientists attention. Experts who have studied the rogue program say it was designed to exploit existing flaws in the unix operating system to gain entry into computers in the internet system i to steal passwords and copy itself secretly and slowly onto network computers while evading detection. Instead a programming error Morris made the program wildly duplicate itself halting thousands of computers within a few hours of its release on nov. 2. 1988. But because the program was designed to attack just two types of computers it affected Only about 2,500 to 6,000 machines
